1744 Restaurant at Redworth Hall Hotel in Darlington

Changed menu and in my opinion its awful. I think it's now expensive for what u get and nothing I would eat. Would not return

We stayed for my birthday on 16 Feb 24. DB&B. The hotel room was ok but small and had no fridge. It was clean. The health club was far too busy and charging me £15 for the hire of 2 robes was a surprise. We had lunch and it was passable. The meal in the 1744 restaurant was one of the worst meals that I have ever had. The fish cake was breaded mashed potato with no fish that I could find and no seasoning or parsley. Extremely bland. The pork belly main was cold and the gravy made with granules. The veg were uninspiring. My sticky toffee pudding was poor without much taste and I would be amazed if homemade. My wife’s meal was equally disappointing. The red wine was pretty uninspiring. The hotel was very busy and we did not get our room until almost 5pm having arrived around 230. I joked with my wife that even if I were offered a free return visit I would not bother. Staff very friendly. Sorry Redworth Hall I rarely post reviews but felt compelled having had such a disappointing birthday.

I’m really surprised by most of the comments about this hotel and restaurant.We were generally disappointed with everything.I wouldn’t be surprised if this hotel spa closes soon.In fact,we decided to come back home one night early. The restaurant could do with some updating,it looks quite old,dark and tired.They offer a quite generous range of dishes but some of them seem very risky to ask for(reading some reviews here have confirmed it)We went for the less risky ones(roast chicken and pork ) and ate them.They weren’t amazing but acceptable and safe.The staff was helpful although some of them seemed to be half trained…the girl who was serving the wine was completely unable to open the cork of our bottle of wine…everything seemed so below average…no what you expect from a spa scape😞

What an amazing place. The restaurant is set in beautiful grounds in a large country house spa hotel. The menu had lots of options and I was spoilt for choice. The food was fantastic and I am so fortunate to have eaten there. The service was excellent and I genuinely felt well attended to.

Our first time at Redworth Hall Hotel. A beautiful hotel, the staff are so friendly and welcoming. The food was beautiful and would like to say thank you to Olivia,the young lady that was our server in the restaurant, she was very polite, friendly and attentive.

We had stayed at Redworth Hall before and thoroughly enjoyed it, this time the food let the hotel down. On our first night I chose Ham Hock terrine and my wife had smoked Haddock Fish cakes. The terrine was so cold it was tasteless served with a wafer thin slice of stale sourdough bread. The fish cakes were tepid and not very flavoursome. Within 2 minutes of our starter plates being cleared the main courses arrived. My belly pork had a jus on top that had congealed and had obviously been sat on the hot plate for some time before service. My wife enjoyed her butterflied chicken but again it was tepid. On our second night my wife had pulled chicken terrine which like the ham hock was so cold the flavour had vanished. There was also pieces of cartridge in the terrine. The main courses arrived within a minute of the starter being cleared. Again the nduja chicken burger was tepid with cheese that was no longer melted. My seafood risotto was the biggest let down. The seafood was very tasty but the rice wasn’t cooked. Some of the rice grains were still white. Any chef worth his salt should know that rice grains that are still white inside are not cooked. I was offered a change of dish but I’d had enough disappointment by then. The breakfast buffet, on the other hand was excellent. All hot dishes were hot and frequently replenished. I thoroughly enjoyed both breakfasts. We have another reservation at the hotel in September and hope that the kitchen at dinner service gets its act together. The service felt very rushed. If more time was spent on presentation things would be improved.

Outstanding, attentive staff, first course acceptable, second course incredible...again restaurant was cold as the rest of the building, but breakfast also delivered.

Visited restaurant for an aunts 96th birthday and had afternoon tea. Positives were lovely room off main restaurant and friendly staff. Negatives were poor value for money. Cheap sandwich fillings (egg mayo, cheese pickle, coronation chicken). I had requested one of the three teas as gluten-free. The coronation chicken was substituted for mashed avocado and a big slice of pepper, not sure what gluten could possibly be in coronation chicken. The scone and cakes were not homemade. All in all it looked about £5 worth of food. The gluten free cakes looked like Mr Kipling type slices. All in all very disappointing. Plenty of tea and coffee though.

Not much choice, soup bland, beef mediocre, dessert bitter. Thankfully the company was better than the food.

Dined here on our first night at the hotel, food was of an average standard not what I would of expected for a premium venue. Service was slow coming and patchy. To top off we was overcharged by £30 on our bill, this was due to an admin error not putting the desserts on the 2 course deal. We had to battle a little to secure the refund, the issue I have is not with the error we are all human and have to learn roles it was the supervisors who wanted to just blame the new colleague. Not very supportive or team spirited. Also visited for breakfast- still fairly average for pub buffet breakfast nothing special or ‘premium’ about here.

The room was clean and comfortable. The bathroom had a bath as well as a shower. Service was good, however the food in the restaurant was disappointing. The starters had clearly been standing for a while, the noodles in the main meal hadn’t been properly drained and had little flavour and the dessert was poorly presented. We didn’t eat in the restaurant on the second night even though it had been paid for.

Beautifully cooked food- the sauces were delicious and complimented the meal beautifully. The choices were varied and had at least 2 vegan and vegetarian options. Breakfasts were great here, continental and full english offered.

We were here for a two night stay and booked into the restaurant for both evening meals. The food was excellent, the service excellent and great value for money quite a pleasant experience.

Lovely atmosphere, staff were excellent and very efficient and attentive, food was nice but nothing extra special.

We stayed here as an adult family group and enjoyed dinner as part of our stay.The choices were fantastic, the dishes were all excellent, great portions too.Felt very safe as social distancing was good, staff all wore masks, luckily the transparent ones so we could see their smiling faces.All of the staff, without exception, were 5 star, nothing was too much trouble.Highly recommend.

Our party of eight all enjoyed the food and variety offered in 1744 restaurant . Couldn’t fault both evening meal or breakfast apart from service may have been a little too quick .... still had wine left in the bottle 😂😂

So the reason for my score is solely because of our phenomenal service from our waitress Karen.From beginning to end this lady was phenomenal, served quickly, with a smile and conversation. I had a issue with my food and unfortunately had to be sent back, instead of making me feel embarrassed about the situation Karen apologized and sorted the issue quickly. Made the whole experience delightful and ensured I got replacement food which was delicious, just wish the first dish had been to.Wish You got the same service everywhere, thank you Karen.

Had a very nice romantic meal whilst staying at the hotel. Dining room is modern and fresh and the staff are friendly and attentive. Food was delicious and came out very quickly. Wine was great.

Nothing good to say about the food apart from one meal that had some very nicely cooked carrots, probably the highlight of all the meals that i had there, saying that breakfast was not too bad.

Scruffy dinning room more like a scruffy storage room six tables no table cloths, dirty walls ceiling had a water stain and carpet was dirty

we were a party of four the selection of breads and oil was forgettable and at least one slice felt hard as if it had been out too long. we waited at least 45 mins for our starters to arrive. probably because of the number of people trying to each we had booked in advance. The lamb was ok the cheese board disappointing and should use locally produced cheeses. My guests were not impressed with any of their dishes the large room feels like eating in an airport or upmarket canteen. This is a big hotel and i could not recommend it for that special dinner. Go there to eat not to enjoy. on a second day we avoided the soulless restaurant and ate burger and chips in and adjacent room this was ok.

Having stayed here the previous year and having our wedding at Redworth some years ago Myself and the wife wanted to stay again as we love the place.

Terrible bland food , fish cake starter brown inside , been cooked in dirty olio came on what look like sweet corn burger relish out of a jar , chicken was ok mushroom sauce was spot it if you could and was see through , tasted of nothing , few veg under chicken , and some new potatoes not sure what they were ment to be they were slightly brown but rock hard awful , pud lemon meringue was ok 4 of us ate none enjoyed it £31.00 for a bottle of porsecco, £3-20 for coke over price rubbished

Something for everyone on the menu, something a little daring or a simple dish. The Cole Thai Style was a definite favourite for me. The desserts are lush and the wine is equally as nice.

We stayed at the hotel and payed for the meal to be part of our visit. Well I am really not sure where to start. I have eaten in many restaurants and it is the first time I have been unable to eat all 3 of the courses. We were sat on a table for 4 (there was 2 of us) and my husband was facing the back of a dirty glass filled bar. Within 5 minutes of arriving, we had been asked 3 times about ordering drinks. I did say to one waitress, that it was nice to be efficient but could we have a minute to decide and she replied rudely with a comment. My pate came and well I could have been sick just looking at it. Runny, pink blobs soaked in a tomato ketchup like sauce with RAW carrots shoved in it. I didn't even touch it and my plate was taken away with not even a question. My husband's crab cakes tasted of old chip fat. Mains...my chicken was too dry to eat, I chewed and chewed. The mushroom sauce was indeed mushroom juice probably from the tinned mushrooms. Again this was left. I was offered an alternative and I asked for a starter of soup (I thought this would be the safest option) Husband's burger was ok, nothing special. Puddings took 45 minutes to arrive and mine just looked like the pate but frozen! Highlight of the night was noticing that our water jug waste absolutely filthy. I put my hand inside and scraped it with my nail. My husband was nearly sick when he saw the black which came off onto my nail. Breakfast, I can't comment on as after waiting in a queue which went all the way along the corridor, we had coffee and melon and left. We didn't fancy standing in the large queue for the cooked breakfast items. The pastries, fruit and yoghurts were at the opposite side and all looked nice.The 'restaurant' is like a cheap eats place where you have to go and stand next to the till to settle your bill. The till is next to a full paper waste bin where half the receipts which are printed by staff, actually ended up all over the floor and weren't picked up.All in all, not a nice experience and I felt spoilt our night away

We had "king prawns" which were the size of a 1p coin. However, tasted nice. My partner had a lemon salmon starter which was also nice. For main we had feather blade beef which fell apart on our plates, it was really delicious. However, as I was cutting through mine there were two very large, noticeable, arteries running through it. I completely understand I was eating meat however to find an artery really made me feel quite ill, and my partner didnt have any, suggesting it was not the cut of the meat. Desserts were really nice also and the staff treated us very nicely .

We stayed here on New Years Eve but as we weren’t attending the gala decided to have dinner in the restaurant. I’d read some mixed reviews so wasn’t sure what to expect. We opted for 3 courses which I believe it around £28/£29 each and it was well worth it.

Oh my... if you could be distracted enough from the grime and dirt embedded into the carpets, you might take a while to attract a waiter/ress to actually serve you. Service, cleanliness utterly shocking! Food is average - at best - and breakfast abysmal. There are better places to eat, I really wouldn’t waste my time or money again at this place!

We had dinner included in our room deal, the hotel was busy and our expectations weren't that high. However all 3 courses were excellent. I'll go into some detail. My wife started with the crab cakes, really good but maybe could have done with a little more crab in the mix. I had the cheese croquettes which were really good, not too rich or heavy. Main course, I had sea bream which was beautifully cooked and had a light but buttery sauce, this was a great choice for a lighter meal. My wife had the chicken - most restaurants dry chicken out but this was moist and tender, perfect, with a sauce to match. I finished with lemon meringue pie which was as good as my Mum's (sorry Mum) but the star of the show was the sticky toffee pudding: how you get something so rich without being cloyingly sweet and SO light is beyond me and also beyond my Mrs who is a very skilled cook (which means we don't eat out that often because we are hard to please). So top marks to the chef and the kitchen. Front of house not quite as good (hence not 5 blobs): very friendly and willing, but need just a bit more training so that when they walk through the restaurant they are able to spot tables that could do with some attention, and to bring drinks orders to the table more quickly (very frustrating to be able to watch your drink sitting on the bar waiting to be brought to you). But I'm being picky here, it was overall a very positive experience. Redworth - hold on to this chef!

Agree with a majority of the negative comments posted previously by customers. Apparently the team at 1744 aren’t listening. Surcharges for upgrade to set meals eg steaks(£9), king prawns ... not really (£3) cheese and biscuits (£4) unacceptable as the meal is already over priced @ £28.50. Hodgepodge of waitress’s/ waiters, but no single member attentive to customer really affecting overall service. Would strongly suggest staff @ 1744 visit a Miller & Carter Restaraunt to take extensive notes on how to improve the quality of their restaurant. Seriously doubt 1744 will take on board constructive comments.

Food was nice, but surcharges unrealistic. £28 for 3 courses but an extra £6 for lamb. Need to order side orders too to make main course complete. Decor in restaurant still outdated. Slow with cooked to order eggs for breakfast. Really busy because everyone on d, b&b; deal.

Service was quite good. No Pinot as they had ‘run out’ a few days ago (though I had a glass earlier in bar). Beef tough, roast ‘vegetables’ consisted of only parsnips and one pitifully small piece of carrot and I couldn’t cut into pudding (sticky toffee pudding that I think was over microwaved). Very poor quality.

service was not good and food not much better we had to wait for our drinks the table next to us sat down after us but got there drinks first we had finished our starters and i still had to get the waiters attention before they came i had belly pork but it was just a lump of jellyfied fat no meat on it at all i could go no but you get the idea

Stayed early AUGUST with Johnson's coaches. Hotel in a lovely setting I could not find any wrong with the hotel staff pleasant and friendly. Hotel spacious in all areas. Clean in all areas 4 different dinning areas food good

Wow was amazing the food was so nice and it was served just in the right time between each course the staff were so polite happy and friendly too clean and nice aroma in the restaurant will defo return

1744 restaurant food was superb and beautifully presented with great choice. We would definitely return.

Ate here as part of a spa overnight package and found the 3 course meal to be gorgeous! Lots to choose from on the menu for even the fussiest of eaters. I do not normally do starters but as it was included I ordered soup, again not something I would normally eat. It was potato and leak served with a crusty bread roll and it was really nice. I then had beef served with carrots, parsnips and mashed potato - this was lovely and the best beef I have ever tasted. Very moist and tasty and cooked just right. I then had sticky toffee pudding with ice cream. This was also lovely although would have been better with custard! My partner had the same starter and desert but had chicken breast in creamy mushroom sauce and he enjoyed that. The service in the restaurant was very good, we were seated quickly and all courses was served quickly too by friendly staff. Same the next morning for breakfast. Buffet breakfast with lots to choose from, continental and hot. All cooked lovely and fresh. Would definitely eat here again.

Attentive staff providing well presented food. Good menu choice for our coach party ( not full menu).

We were staying at the hotel with a meal included in our stay, we opted for mushroom soup and ham hock terrine to start... Both were fantastic, for mains we both had beef with red wine ju which was cooked to perfection and presented beautifully, the chocolate brownie and sticky toffee pudding topped off a first class meal.

We booked a table during our stay at Redworth Hall and opted for the three courses each with steak which is a £9 supplement.

The restaurant is a little dated but the service and the food was outstanding.

A very busy night as there seemed to be a few coach loads of folk in, but the staff coped very well and there were no delays. Good selection on the menu and the food was delicious from starters to pudding. Good wine choice. Would recommend.

We had the three course meal and was absolutely blown away with the quality and service. Our waiter was exceptional. Fine dining at its best.

We ate at the restraunt as part of our DBB stay and to be honest were pleasantly surprised as to the quality it was excellent, we have had meals at hotels on this basis and been disappointed.

Food here is tasty, only problem for us was main meal, we were Sat in a dated back room, not the main restaurant. Also at breakfast, the menu said black pudding, but there wasn't any to be seen.

We had dinner included as part of our overnight deal. There was quite a nice choice. Extra charge for cheeseboard and other things. Husband's lamb was nice. My seafood risotto was on the small side as we're our lemon tarts to follow. If you have a larger appetite the risotto maybe won't be enough for you. We saw other people having Aberdeen Angus burgers which looked big , if you like burgers . Service was good but drinks didn't come before starters , a small thing .
