Duke William Inn in Bury

I just love The Duke. Food is gorgeous, staff friendly, prices very reasonable,.location lovely and cask ale well looked after. Chef loves cooking curries and you can tell...they are awesome.

Yet again outstanding food from Duke William Ainsworth, I had a dish off the specials list, herb lamb rack 💖💖 it’s was Delicious so so tasty, David Howarth had steak and ale pie and he said it was the nicest he has EVER had ,great service as always too 💖💖

First visit here with my husband. Lovely pub and great for a refreshing drink after our walk. Cheese and onion pie is the best I've ever had. Staff were attentive and landlady was very welcoming. We will be back.

Lovely cosy pub. The pie of the day was excellent and so was the sticky ginger pudding. Good selection of beers and very friendly staff. Will definitely visit again.

Will NOT be returning. Visited the duke William for tea one Sunday, our table was booked for 3:30 and when we arrived wasn’t ready - we waited 25 minutes before we even sat down. This meant we was waiting in the bar area and was getting awful looks from a lady who I believe was the landlord. This could’ve been avoided if our table was ready for the time we booked for?! The same lady took our order and continued to be extremely rude, upon paying the bill at the bar she made a comment moaning that no one had dessert which I find weird. She then let a member of the party buy another round of drinks then 2 minutes later come over to the table saying she needed the table back. This was at 5:30, so we only had the table for 2 hours which was NEVER mentioned upon booking especially when there was quite a lot of us. I find this disgraceful after letting someone buy a round of drinks then saying we need to move off the table this is disgusting behaviour she clearly just wanted the money. If this is the landlady her attitude is AWFUL and her attitude alone was enough to put us off going back. Completely ruined it, and the last thing being we paid £50 deposit to secure the table and she tried to dismiss this and not knock it off the total bill. Vile

Been a couple of times to this cosy village pub. Food always hits the spot. Great variety of dishes on the menu. I highly recommend going for their themed food nights and weekly curry night you won’t be disappointed. Just came back from the Chinese themed night and I can say hands down the best Duck spring rolls I’ve ever had.

Absolutely outstanding. We did the special Chinese menu and combination of flavours was phenomenal. The portion sizes were way bigger than we were expecting. I felt like I was eating in a Rosette restaurant but with substantial portions. 100% would recommend to anyone debating eating anywhere in the area and worth travelling to if you're not local. Very friendly staff who genuinely care how you were treat and if you liked the food. Felt well accommodated and welcome.

My husband was very disappointed with his meal , and seeing as it was a birthday treat for him , the quantity and quality has definitely gone down, and the price has gone up considerably. We were not going to complain to the staff about the portion, size , my husband had the Duck , Three very thin and small pieces, and the plate filled with a green veg , and a few very small potatoes, There were five of us , we were quite happy with the size of our meals , apart from my husband who was happy with the quality on the meal , just not the quantity.

Amazing food. We’ve visited 3 times now and the food has blown us away each time. The specials menu is always something to look forward too. All the food is fantastic quality and no one was disappointed.

Everything was lovely until 6.10pm when we were informed the table had to be vacated by 6pm.No body had told us about this arrangement when we booked the meal or arrived to have our meal.The lady then proceeded to tell everyone at the bar we weren’t moving.At this point we had not received a bill and the children were still eating.If we where told it was a two hour booking we would. have obliged.

Nice food the bar manager/ owner who was an older woman rude and did not make you feel welcome, rather go somewhere a bit more friendly.

As I drove down the beaten track towards the duke William, the smells of khoa san road and chang mai became more distinctive..the smells of my travels around Thailand back in 2016.... Seeing on Instagram that the duke William was offering a Thai curry night, all I could hear was axl rose singing "welcome to the jungle " - a classic guns and roses track...I could have been raised off my motorbike and followed the scent of that jungle curry. Imagine the Hannah-barbera cat "I think toms his name" following the fresh smell of fish, but this was pungent and warming...really had my taste buds tantalizing, and I hadn't made it through the front door. Sitting down and having a beer, wishing it was a chang, but nevertheless, birra moretti did the trick. I managed to get my hands on a jungle... Rumour has it, a small angry Italian operates and cooks all the Curry's from scratch...how could such a bloke with such anger create a balance of flavours not even Paul Hollywood would put in to a focaccia..he really sounds more like a delicate flower with finesse and passion. Once finishing, I asked who this personality was behind the pans... Soon to be told, his name is Nelly. Thanks Nelly for the nostalgia and feeling I had during my trip to Thailand. So to you nelly - knob kun khrap 🙏🙏

Always a warm welcome from Diane and the team at the Duke. Called in on Sunday lunch after a hike and had one of the best roasts ever..absolutely fabulous. Always a friendly bunch in the bar and treats for our cocker spaniel Darcy too. Thanks Duke William for a lovely afternoon as always.

Visited the Duke’ for a meal again. Been numerous times as the food is always excellent As well as crediting the catering staff, especially Nellie the head chef who glided through the pub like a triumphant Freddie mercury at the end of a performance at Wembley, thanks must go to Charlotte who greeted us warmly upon arrival and served us as if we was family Many thanks Charlotte. We will return again to be satisfied by you and your team

We have had many lovely lunches here at the Duke. Every few Wednesdays Doreen, Glenis, Margery and I treat ourselves with our pension money to a girls luncheon. We each opt for a small fish and chips which is just the right size for us ladies… followed by a cappuccino. Margery likes just 6 chips which the kitchen are more than happy to accommodate. We are always greeted by a pleasant girl called Charlotte who remembers our order and serves us with a smile.

Oh dear,first meal here and will be our last.Meal booked for 12 oclock today 18/2/24.Salt n pepper pots brought to table .I told partner not to touch salt pot as it was coveved down one side in what looked like curry .We both had roast beef meal.Beef was so thinly cut ,2 slices,SWIMMING in gravy ,slushy mash and sweet potato,i turned my plate around 4 times so as to miss the slosh .I am sorry to write this as on thursday we went in for a pint and to book for sunday meal(today)and landlord i think it was so friendly .He is being let down big style by his staff.I must admit im from a retail food background so i know the time of day ,come on staff pull youre socks up youre employer deserves so much more .

Excellent food and service, definitely worth a visit

We went for lunch today and two of us had fish and chips as we'd had them last time and they were just as good, the home made tartar sauce is simply divine. Mushrooms in garlic sauce was the third choice and again delicious. Lovely relaxing place, friendly attentive staff and will definitely return.

First class service and top-notch, reasonably priced, pub food. I recommend booking as the dining area isn't large. Highly recommended.

Did not eat,just had drinks. Quality of the drinks were good but top end prices.The £5 pound pint has been truely abliterated in a lot of local pubs now.

Booked a 60th birthday meal a month ago for Sunday 18th December for 8 people gave menu order well in advance, arrived on the night meal booked for 6pm absolute chaos. Table not ready people still on it! Waited in back room. Got table eventually, one of starters incorrect took rather than wait again. No steak n ale pie for the person who,s birthday it was,had to choose alternative (thought we had pre ordered weeks ago?? Raised concerns with staff but very dismissive.Overall not a pleasant experience!! Very disappointed not just for the experience but the lack of customer service.

Highly recommend! Excellent home made food, great choice including daily specials. Never had a bad meal, compliments to the chef's. Excellent customer service and lovely staff. Dog friendly too.

Recently ate here and came back today for the beef Sunday roast - it wad amazing and there was plenty of meat. The beef was so soft and tender, one of the best, it not the best roast we have ever had. The brownie afterwards was perfect too. Staff are lovely and friendly and the pub has a relaxed and cost atmosphere.

I popped in for a glass of wine after a dog walk. There were two members of staff behind the bar. Neither acknowledged me. I stood at the bar holding a £20 note in my hand which was clearly visable, (I'm not in the habbit of shouting for my wine) so I waited to be served. One pushed past me to collect glasses and the other chatted to the 'regular' men at stood round the bar. I waited to be served for a minute then left. Obviously its a 'mans pub'

Food was delicious and such friendly service. Lovely atmosphere. Traditional English pub decor. Loved it! Gammon and Duke burger both highly recommended.

Lovely lunch time meal and ale today (Wed 1st Nov) Service spot on in this historic local pub, small but perfectly proportioned. The Venison Pie was amazing!

First visit in a long time to Duke William and wasn't disappointed. Four of us having lunch for a friends Birthday and we were all more than happy with our food choices. Two of us had the cheese and onion pie which was amazing the best we've had in a long time and the chips were delicious too. One had the gammon which looked and tasted like a steak from the butchers and our final lady had the sausage sandwich which again was delicious. Only 2 of us had room for desert but both were delicious. Lovely pub. Will definitely visit again.

It's ok, bit average in my opinion, Sunday lunch was small and lacking in veg.

Went on Thursday evening (curry night) Food very good and great service too. Historic pub in picturesque village setting. Highly recommended.

Food was delicious. Service was shocking. Young girls stood talking. Waited ages for plates to be removed. Hubby had to go to go to the bar to order as girls to busy talking to see if we needed anything else...waited ages for horseradish sauce and for pudding. Service let everything down.

First ever visit here, actually for a crown green bowling match. Ate in the pub, and they did a great job. An oldie worldy pub with real character. Happy to recommend it fully.

Excellent food, we traveled from Blackpool to enjoy lunch here. The only hiccup was trying to find the venue (down a side street). Real ale available (Cask Marque accredited).

Lovely beers, friendly staff and some really, really good food. On this occasion, we had a selection of Greek dishes. Each was as tasty and well presented with care as we've had in Greek restaurants. Complements to all and especially the talented chef. *There are several exceptional off-road walks immediately behind this dog friendly pub.

This is one of my favourite places to eat or sit with a glass of wine and do the crossword. The food is spot on and I have never had a bad meal. Proper Chefs here and I never have to season anything that Nick prepares. Am a retired Home Economist so know a little about food! Like the way he goes off at a tangent sometimes and it always works. Hence the goat curry the other week that was amazing. Prices are sensible and I always wonder how they do it - by cooking things from scratch. Being a Widow, it is nice to go somewhere where I am made so welcome by all the Staff. Thanks Diane.

Sorry to have to Wright this but we went on Sunday and we were most disappointed, firstly we were not told we had to ask staff about Sunday lunch menu also chicken supreme was off at 1-00. We settled on starters and chicken and chorizo pie from recommendation from staff. As I started mine I placed a form full on my plate too start my lunch and was faced with a length of skin plus feathers also on inspection I pulled out of fish the knuckle end of drumstick.me finished. The waitress came too see if all was ok and I showed her what I had found she apologised and went away, eventually the chef came ask what was wrong I showed him and he admitted I was right I said I was not eating it and off he went. This is a tale but shortened for 3people myself having one piece of garlic bread and 6chips cup of coffee, the lunchtime ended up costing over £60 no apology from management and I went home and made something too eat which I could have done in the first place. MIFFED.

This is an excellent village local. Although it's small on the inside, the outside area is great for soaking up the sun. Thursday curry night is a must with one vegetarian option always on. Solid real ale selection-White Witch. And although they do waste a pump with Doom Bar; they sometimes get a great beer like Oakham Citra on.

Popular with locals, this is a good pub to call in. We just turned up hoping for something toveat. The place was full. We were told that we may have to wait about half an hour. In the event we sat down after about 15 minutes. We used the time to get a drink and speak to a couple who had just eaten. They were effusive in their praise. They said they ate there regularly and praised the cheese and onion pie. I had Jamaican goat curry, my other half, the curried fish. We both enjoyed our meals. We will eat here again but booking is a good idea.

Too notch service, the food was absolutely delicious, I had Caribbean, Jamaican Goat curry, and it was so nice, full of flavour, the goat melted in your mouth, absolutely delicious, great bar staff today who really looked after a couple next to us celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, Sam and Lewis went above and beyond to make sure they had an amazing night , it was lovely to see how special they made the night for them , All the staff where amazingly , always checking tables to make sure every one had drinks, no tables left with plates on them .. absolutely 💯 service all the time .

Excellent meal last night to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Pulled pork spring rolls 😋. Followed by Ragu Linguine and chicken and chorizo pie with all the trimmings.. Great service as always 👍

They reserve the front room for dinners but they come in and don’t eat we have to sit out side because there’s no room inside. Locals very unfair. We had kids but had to stay outside in the cold

Father-in-law is a regular at lunch times, so this lovely pub came recommended. Great place for multi-generation meal. Great tasting food - nice and hot when served. Large fish and chips pronounced delicious by teen son, and even and even filled him up (he's taller than me). Service above and beyond, so huge thanks to the team.

The scotch egg is the best. Service is fair. They were pretty busy so we had to go to the bar to get drink refills. The lamb chops were on the small side. Fish and chips and steak and ale pie were good.

Fab food and very accommodating staff We arrived at 2.15pm to find food was only served till 2.30 during the weekdays but were still served. I had a wonderful steak, mushroom and blue Stilton ciabatta and my husband had a lamb hot pot. Both were freshly prepared and delicious. There was a very welcome real fire to sit next to as I was really cold. Will definitely return. Neither of us had been before despite living just a few miles away. My husband all his life and myself for over 50 years. It is hidden away from the main road, shame there aren’t more signposts to show the way for people passing through on the way to Bolton

Went to the Chinese banquet night yesterday. Absolutely fantastic. Beautiful, authentic, fresh tasting food. Well thought out menu, good portion sizes and beautifully presented. Have been to steak night and curry night and the food is always excellent.

We went for the Chinese banquet night , the food was absolutely amazing, the flavours exploded in your mouth, the waitress was quite attentive and very friendly, the young lad Lewis behind the bar was amazing and literally couldn’t do more for you and a huge to Simon who couldn’t do more for you 🥰 amazing food amazing chefs amazing bar staff amazing pub 🥰

We were in a party of 10 so were asked to pre-order, which does exclude “the soup of the day” etc, but assume that won’t be an issue for smaller parties

Party of 7 of us came in for a barely average lunch. Best meal was the battered fish but chips tasted of old fat that needed changing. Nothing special and not worth the money. Sadly we will not be coming in again.

From the min you walk in you are made to feel welcome, bar staff look really smart , open fire to side of the bar , lovely back ground music , the waiting on staff are so nice , and extremely attentive, the food is absolutely delicious, so tasty , I can highly recommend the mushroom with Stilton and garlic on toast and the sea bass, everything was just lovely ! A must is the Irish ☘️ coffees!! So so nice , everyone needs to order one 🥰 well duke William thank you for a lovely afternoon 🥰

As a Southerner, I have never quite got to grips with the savoury 'puddings' in Bolton although my Husband and Children - all Bolton born - love them. The friendly Licensee described the lamb 'pudding' in great detail, home made on the premises, so, as a retired Home Economist, I gave it a go. Wow, really really good. Years ago, my Husband and I were regulars here (when Baz had it) and it was known for the food then, it is now. Have been back a few times and the food is always excellent and suitably priced. Unfortunately, some of my regular haunts have had changes in Chefs and understandable rise in prices - one now out of my comfort zone, but the Duke hits the spot with food, prices and great service. Every member of Staff has gone out of their way to be pleasant and have a chat, much appreciated as I went in on my own. Have also had the curry, the meat balls, the monkfish tail with ham and cassoulet plus; an amazing side salad that was a meal in its own. Appreciate food prepared and cooked by talented Chefs rather than the Home Cooked meals that can have originated anywhere as long as heated up on the premises. Thanks you, looking forward to coming again.

Slightly disappointed there’s no chilly con carne or kebabs on the new Menu Please bring them back, How about a nice winter stew or Thai Green Curry 😀
