Tasty and cheap cuisine from Ghana. Friendly service and decent menu selection. We brought our own wine as it's not licensed. An excellent experience. We will return!

We went because of the Tripadvisor reviews, its proximity to our hotel, and because we wanted to try a new cuisine for us. We were not disappointed. The staff patiently answered our questions about the food, which is Ghanian. We had a plantain starter, the jollof rice with chicken, and the waakye (rice + beans) with tilapia. Everything was wonderfully spiced, yet not overly spicy. The atmosphere is not fancy but the food was great. It's BYOB if that matters.

Might be a bit late on this but came here for dinner on a Wednesday evening in January and had some Jollof which tasted delicious. I was served by a very friendly and lovely girl whose name is Nicole ,the service and the atmosphere were great . Would definitely return .

Infact I really enjoyed the food your fufu and goat meat soup, banku and tilapia, Jollof, Kenkey and fish , waakye was soo sumptuously I wil choose you guys over and over again anytime I come to Edinburgh Your staffs were very professional and patient ❤️❤️❤️

We went during a quiet time so atmosphere is based on decor alone. It was my first time eating West African food and I was thoroughly impressed. The peanut stew was perfect to share between two, with more than enough chicken and fufu. The service too was fantastic.

This restaurant is a real gem. The flavors and quality are spectacular, the service is attentive and welcoming, and the prices can’t be beat. One of my favorite restaurants now.

The jollof rice and grilled chicken were very tasty and substantial. The medium spice level was just right for me. I would have liked a bit of token veg or salad on my plate to make it feel more balanced. An interesting addition to the halal options in the city.

Lovely food and generous portions. Relaxed friendly and really reasonable too. We had fried plantain starter then fried chicken with rice and fried chicken with jollof rice. We’ll definitely be back.

Popped in after rugby. Staff friendly and attentive and gave recommendations. Grilled chicken lovely spiced but not too hot. First time trying jollof rice and loved it. The plain fried rice was also a hit. Plantain the star of the show. Great value.

I was walking past and went in to ask whether they do carry out as I was pressed for time. I ordered 3 main dishes which were prepared timeously. One of the orders i changed as he said it would take longer to prepare. The food was absolutely delicious and the portions generous. I shall be going back to dine in.

It looks like it's a plastic fast food joint, but don't be put off. There's a quiet, friendly welcome, and a pleasant if simple ambience. The food is simple too: plainly presented, not over-elaborate. More importantly it's delicious and just a wee bit different than anything else in Edinburgh. I liked it so much the first time I went back two nights later. Mains were based around rice: jollof rice, deeply coloured and delicately spiced, and, the second night, waakye (black beans and rice.) Both perfectly cooked. By the way, these dishes might seem surprisingly expensive: £12 before you add any meat or veg. But the portions are very big: easily enough for two people. A standout side was plantain in 'natural African spices' - subtly spicy/herby, and with a lovely softness to complement the rice. That was good value at £5, and generally prices are very reasonable. The Ghana salad I wanted was unavailable so I had green salad instead, which was okay; the small 'Phriends pie' I had as a starter was more than okay: lovely crumbly butter pastry with a small amount of juicy meat and veg. If you want a kick of heat, don't miss the shito sauce, with its distinctive flavours of black pepper and dried fish. The first night I was the only customer, the second night there was one other diner. If this was near the university it would be full every night, but it's tucked away down the never-very-appealing Morrison Street. It's worth seeking out: in my view it's a great example of the kind of small, independent restaurant that reflects the owners' background and passions. It's not licensed but BYOB is fine.

I went to Edinburgh on a trip and was looking for an African restaurant to eat. I was glad to find this place with my friend. The food was excellent and the service was marvellous to the extent I was craving it on my way back home. I really would go back there on my next trip to Edinburgh 👍🏾👍🏾

Do you want an authentic Ghanaian food that makes you feel at home in another country? Then Phriends food is the place. The food is very tasty and palatable. And the meals are not overpriced like other African restaurants. I’m looking forward to my next visit, which should be very very soon. So far I have tasted meals like Waakye, Kebab, Jollof rice , banku and Tilapia, and their Shito omg you will love it. I will highly recommend.

Such a lovely family atmosphere, they really cherish their customers here. The waitress told us more about the dishes which was interesting and also helped us choose. Vegan options are varied, delicious and filling. Fried plantain in African spices is a must, Jollof rice is delicious and will suit most tastes, friend plantain with bean sauce had such an interesting palette of tastes, best option if you want something new. Fish tasted like it came straight from the lake. One star deducted just because they didn't have all the dessert options available, I'm sure that was only temporary though.

Following my family’s discovery of Phriends, we have ordered through deliveroo multiple times and went in today for sit down meal. Must say, the ambience is impeccable, unlike others. Best African cuisine in Edinburgh.

I had not been in Edinburgh for a while and I visited with my husband. I went to Phriends Food with him for dinner. This was the best choice I made during this short stay in Edinburgh! We tried six dishes and we both loved each of them. I particularly love their chicken and their Jollof rice. The place is great for everyone including families, and it is literally the cleanest restaurant where I have ever been. The staff are lovely and want to ensure you have a great experience. I would totally recommend this to anyone! LOVED it! Can't wait to be back!

Get the Jollof Rice with Chicken. The chicken was flavorful and cooked perfectly. We were given a large serving of rice and we ate every last grain. Delicious! The family running the restaurant were very nice.

The server was friendly and welcoming, and the food excellent. However, we felt the server seemed really nervous and a first the restaurant was silent like a library which made us feel awkward. It was much better when they put on some African pop music. The other issue was that they had no Diet Coke and half the menu items were sold out, but our server didn’t know this until after we had ordered. We felt the restaurant had potential but needs more atmosphere and energy- and a larger selection of soft drinks
