If I was to sum this up in one word, it would be - WowI had never been to The Brink before (and now I'm wondering why!) but an article about Vegan afternoon tea in the Liverpool Echo brought it to my attention and we decided to check it out.I called the day before to confirm and the lady I spoke to on the phone was fantastic, talking me through different options and going to check with the chef that they would have everything needed to provide me with a superb afternoon tea. Some cakes are bought in and some are made on site, so it's definitely worth booking ahead of time (believe me, you don't want to miss out on the yummy cakes!) but I definitely got the impression that they would do their best if you just turned up, but would be disappointed not to be able to offer you the best that they can doWhen we arrived we had a warm welcome and made ourselves comfortable, after ordering we took time looking around as there is so much to see, from artwork to a variety of services you can access at The Brink and elsewhere in Liverpool When our food arrived our eyes grew, surely all of this couldn't be for us? We had 3 types of sandwiches/wraps each (1 normal afternoon tea and 1 vegan afternoon tea) and lots of delicious cakes and scones, with the vegan cakes discreetly marked with a slice of strawberry - which I think is an excellent way of making it clear without being really obvious and making the vegan feel awkward! You could tell that everything had been freshly made and was of such high quality, you could tell the they had really put effort in to the vegan offerings and it was definitely not just an afterthought (as is unfortunately common when you can even find somewhere that has vegan options). From the way it was presented, to the thought and effort put in to each item, this is the best afternoon tea I've ever had, and believe me I've worked my way around plenty of them!We didn't manage to finish our afternoon tea, something I've never said before, but the staff happily gave us boxes to take it away in and we enjoyed it later. When it came to paying I thought that there was a mistake with the bill, at that price they must have only charged us for one afternoon tea? I was assured it was correct and just couldn't believe that they could provide such quantity, quality, service and variety for that cost, never mind actually make a profit on it too! I am a total bargain hunter and love getting value for money, but it felt criminal to walk out of there paying only what they were asking so I gave by far the biggest tip I've ever given and still walked out thinking I had a bargain! The staff were all made up with the tip, making sure all other members of staff knew too, they tried to refuse it but it was well deserved and WHEN (definitely not if!) I go back I would gladly do the same again

I was told this place had recently won bar of the year in Liverpool and it would have to be pretty special for a dry venue to get that against Liverpool's eclectic nightlife. We went during the day and it was quite clear that there are a lot of community events going on throughout the week and the permanent stage erected in the corner looked as though it had been well used. The place came about as a centre for help locals suffering with addiction. We are from out of town and I have to say had I known that striaght away I might have thought twice about coming. However I didn't and I have to say we got a really warm welcome with people very keen to tell us of the good work they are doing. I must say, it was only when I asked about the history of the place did everything get explained to me. This is a really good social enterprise and based upon the quality of the food, the delicious coffees and the warmth of the welcome you can understand why it won such a prize. By the way, apparently they won because of the 'cocktails' they make and the live music they run throughout the week. Go, even for the chocolate cake, and buy a 'suspended coffee'.

When food ran out they bought more there was too much for everyone to eat and everyone left stuffed and with doggie bags which were kindly boxed up by the staff. The staff created a friendly welcoming atmosphere and made it feel like a private event by providing ample room fr the guests presents and food creating a buffet like feel all fr the reasonable price of 12.50 a head for the celebration afternoon tea. Prior to tea we had non alcoholic cocktails which were delicious with strawberries and chocolate as part of the package. A lovely day as a result of great service will definitely visit again x x

Backstory: My husband and I were looking for a place to grab afternoon tea, and despite the Brink not appearing during my search for "afternoon tea" on Yelp, we discovered it nonetheless. Most important to us in choosing the Brink is this note from their website:"The Brink is a community interest company (CIC) owned by the charity Action on Addiction, and was established to support people recovering from addiction as well as to provide benefit to the sider community by offering a vibrant, healthy alternative to the prevailing culture of harmful drug and alcohol consumption. Any surplus funds are redirected to support addiction recovery and family support in the Liverpool community." We arrived at quarter past twelve and ordered our tea. It was well priced at 8.95GBP per person and waitstaff were welcoming and helpful. Although online your choices are presented as English tea or house coffee, we were offered a variety of other teas from which to choose. We chose the English tea and it was delicious. We were given the daily special tea sandwiches of chicken and garlic mayo, cheese and red onion, and hummus and rocket (arugula), all of which were tasty. Finally, the scones and pastries were divine. I cannot recommend the Brink enough for afternoon tea, and I would assume the rest of their food and drinks would be just as delicious!

I'd read great reviews of The Brink online and we weren't disappointed. We travelled from Dublin to Liverpool for a few days and went to The Brink on Saturday morning. They offered a few cooked breakfast options, and we both went for the Veggie Brekkie (although it's only me who's vegetarian), and it was great. Two veggie sausages, egg, mushroom, tomato, beans and hash brown, with toast and tea. Phew! All for £5.50. We were served by Franco, who paid great attention to detail, and Jay, who was very welcoming. All the staff are very chatty, but not intrusive. The atmosphere was fab - nice surroundings and very chilled out, with great music in the background (Bunnymen, The Smiths, Arcade Fire, etc.) - and friendly, and we liked it so much we returned on Sunday!Forget your cafe chains and support this local, community co-operative. It's a brilliant initiative (helping to support people with addiction issues) and I would definitely recommend a visit here!

Still a bit of a gem for good inexpensive food, relaxed and friendly atmosphere and good music. Watch out for the lunchtime 'Brink Special'; on Friday I had a lovely piece of breaded hake on a bed of rocket salad for under a fiver. They do great chips too! It's a little bit off centre (up Bold Street, turn right down Slater Street and the left up Parr Street) but worth the stroll. The Brink is a social enterprise owned by Action on Addiction - so it's dry, but they more than compensate by an array of non alcoholic alternatives, And of course there's that added advantage of knowing that you're not contributing your hard-earned cash to the coffers of a tax-avoiding corporate!

The Brink is a eatery with a difference. It exists to fund help for the rehabilitation of people who are suffering with addiction. The place is bright and modern without falling into the hipster abyss. The food is excellent and varied catering for the carnivore and herbivore equally. There is no alchohol as its a dry bar but the range of alchohol free cocktails is both varied and refreshing. The staff are friendly and polite and there is very much a relaxed atmosphere. After hearing about this apparently being one of the best afternoon teas in Liverpool my husband and I decided to take a visit on our day trip to the coastal city. We walk in and thought it looked really cool--trendy and airy! There were no menus on the table and after a few moments of no one coming over we went to the bar to get menus. We decided for £8.50 we would get the afternoon tea (as we do in nearly every UK city we visit). my SO goes up to the bar to order and request one Tea have only the cucumber sandwiches. The man says there's a veg option that would be better if I wanted, so I decided to give it a try and SO requests just the normal sandwich options. After we sit back down we are brought a napkin and knife each, then the waiter immediately turns around and starts petting a dog (which was sitting next to a lady at another table) and then just hops back behind the bar. I'm not going to say he didn't wash his hands, but I didn't see him wash them. Took a while but our tea came out and i was disappointed immediately. Firstly, both were vegetarian which isn't what we wanted. Then I notice there were 3 sandwiches: cheese &a sweet tasting chutney, hummus, and tomato. Literally JUST hummus on one and JUST tomato on the other. Unhappily I eat them and move on. Wanted to eat the scone, but we got whipped cream out of the can-- which was obvious because of that star shape spray cans have. I eat the cake, overall the cakes were the only good part, I really enjoyed the chocolate one. Then SO decides to go to the bar and ask if they have something other than this whipped cream for the scone. The man says they only have this cream which is made from scratch...obviously a lie because unless they make it then put it in a can and spray it out it's not handmade. I take a bite of the scone and it was ROCK hard. Inside was chewy, tasted awful. I spit it out without hesitation. We left immediately nearly £20 lighter but 0 satisfaction. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, just spend £5 more and go somewhere else.

Guys I am a regular visited to the brink and fully support their cause. I have always had great service from the staff members when we attend. However today Sunday evening I was served by a gentleman at the bar as usual. I asked what the soup of the day was and all I got in return was, " it's on the board. " I then had to go and look at the board at the end of the bar. Why on earth couldn't he just tell me. I wanted two diet cokes and he told me that they had sold out. Come on guys selling out of Diet Coke in a none alcoholic bar isn't good enough. He didn't really seam interested in offering an alternative. Very poor. This was the first time I had, had such poor service and I will return because I think the cause is so important but please let's get the service right and keep the loyal customers. Sorry about the review but I just needed to point this out.

Just a little out of the way and hard to find this gem of a place serves great good with great friendly service. It states its aim is to us surplus funds to aid people recover from addictions and I am going to guess that some of the people who work here are volunteers. To be served by a big burly middle aged Scouse make albeit extremely friendly was a novel and pleasant experience The ambience was great the current bohemian look. The building must have been a garage repair shop in a previous life Easy street parking outside and a generous sized terrace Clientele seemed typical scousers all very relaxed and informal. And you get that feel good factor that you have helped a charity as well as dined. A a restaurant it's a 4 star here but I give it 5 stars because of the charity bonus

After reading the Liverpool Echo’s “Afternoon Tea” review I decided to try “The Brink” (Saturday 22 August 2015), and I was very impressed.I cannot praise the Staff highly enough, they were extremely friendly and attentive as soon as we arrived, and the Chef even checked if we had any food allergies. As I’d pre-booked our Afternoon Tea it was delivered within minutes of our arrival. We had a selection of finger sandwiches; mustard roast ham, cheese & pickle and butter roast chicken, sweet pastries with a savoury filling, warm cinnamon-flavoured scones with double cream and strawberry jam, miniature cakes; chocolate brownies and syrup sponge, and a selection of fruit; strawberries, blackcurrants, mango and kiwi, and fine English tea/Brink’s own house blend coffee.Every single item was gorgeous. For the price (£8.50), quality and service The Brink’s Afternoon Tea is a must - you will not be disappointed.***** To all of The Brink’s Staff - Keep up the good work *****

Booked the day before visiting and the lady who took the booking was exceptionally polite and friendly on the phone. An interesting buzzing venue with people milling around: eating, talking, adding artwork to the walls.Staff were very friendly, initially we sat for sometime assuming there was table service as cutlery was brought to the table but made a mistake regarding this - staff apologised and quickly took our order. Our drinks did arrive after we had finished our starters but the food was so delicious there wasn't a need to get grumpy about that. The drinks themselves were a delicious concoction of juices, ice and fruit - so refreshing. We both had hummus and bread for starter and Thai green curry for mains - both delish.I would recommend this venue for the friendly nature of staff and the great job the chef does of the food - plus the prices were really very reasonable too. But also there's all manner of activity sessions on offer as well.

I recently enjoyed a business lunch here - my first visit and I was pleasantly surprised. The venue is relaxed (maybe a bit too loud for a serious business meeting) and unique. The food ( I had the cheese/ham omlette) was lovely and the menu is broad. Customer Service could be better - no service with a smile on this occasion BUT, as highlighted I would return to gi it another go

Had been to an early pictures on a Sunday and not had breakfast so called in here for all day breakfast (till 3 pm on a Sunday). Staff really welcoming and friendly. All you would expect for a full English; freshly cooked and the toast was great - a good thick slice. 'Proper' tea in a proper teapot. £6 including tea - excellent value. They have a decked/paved area to the front, which is ideal for sitting out. Sunday roast menu looked really good so will try that sometime.

Would never have known of this great place if I hadn't bought a Living Social voucher. Don't know Liverpool as I live the other side of the river but we were going to an event and used voucher to eat Sat afternoon, when the place wasn't too busy. There were 5 of us (2 vegetarians) and we all chose different starters and mains, which were all very good (and very large portions!). The staff were lovely, very friendly and helpful. The drinks menu is huge with a wide choice of mocktails, smoothies, unusual cordials (yum) and bottled drinks. Very reasonable prices so we tried out several, all enjoyed.Great coffee too. Owned by a charity so profits go to a really good cause; look it up and try it out.

I love the Brink, I truly do. From the awesome mocktails to the lazy Sunday brunches to the outstanding fish and chips (try it, you won't regret it) the food is always always always incredible and great value for the size of the portions. The staff can sometimes be a bit on the ditzy side but they're nice and friendly and I don't think I've ever been into the Brink with any particular hurry so waiting has never been an issue. They have an eclectic mix of events, from open mic nights to bike workshops to the wonderfully named Raucous Caucus choir, and it feels like such a welcoming and inclusive space that I can stay in there all day (in fact, I have on occasion).

The Brink has simple but wholesome, delicious food! It is of great quality and caters for the whole family! It always has seasonal offers and different specials! I dont think theres as much of a buzz around the Brink as there should be! Although the Brink doesn't do fancy or quirky food it is delicious and has a nice relaxed atmosphere! The staff are very friendly and helpful and seem like they are happy to be there. They also are flexible in catering for peoples needs, e.g I went with a 5 year old and they happily took his order of a slice of bread and butter with some chicken and a bowl of chocolate ice-cream! It also does have a good range of healthy dishes which is a plus because it is hard to eat out and still be healthy!

I have to be honest when I say that the Service was verging on poor, the only thing that clawed it back was the salt n pepper chicken burger which was one of the nicest burgers I have ever had. We had a living social voucher which advertised it as a restaurant, it was very much like a train station cafe.

I was one of the most unpalatable meal that I have ever had! I had a burger, maybe it was handmade as they said, but NOT fresh. Could not eat it at all. I had stomach ache for hours. The one fresh thing in it was a small piece of lettuce. The only good thing about it is a nice place and their drinks, not food.

Stumbled across this little gem whilst looking for a quick bite en route to a local event. The staff understood our haste, took our order and the food was served very quickly. Although we only had sandwiches, there was a choice of bread and the fillings were very generous. I only ate half of my sandwich (as it proved to be quite substantial) and saved the rest for later. The venue was quite spacious and had a peculiar L shaped interior with a stage positioned enabling good views for numerous people. There were outside facilities available for those who wish to smoke. The staff were friendly, attentive and polite. A venue worth searching out.

Every so often we feel the urge to go to the Brink. But there are thousands of bars in Liverpool, why choose this one? It's a really well rounded place, good food, good prices. friendly staff, a 'buzz', a great place when you're not in a hurry, because you'll just want to chill out with another Shampagne Mocktail. Don't laugh, try it! Flavours are really good. I hope the irony of this isn't wasted on anyone but I came a couple of weeks ago with doctor members of a wine club, and a good time was had by all. And many thanks to all the staff for lovely plates of food, the good humour that IS Liverpool, and to Dave B for giving us a talk on what the Brink was all about. If you get to the end of this review, then get down there and try it.Terrific!

Have been to The Brink on Parr Street several times. Its a "dry" bar. The mocktails are really good!. Food is fresh and locally sourced were possible, a good veggie and even some vegan alternatives (woohoo!) the staff are very friendly and the place has a very relaxed feeling about it. I'd recommend the hot chocolate too. Definitely worth a visit. In the evening the Brink has various events on including bands, football (on a huge screen), film night to name a few, the music gets louder and the lights dim and yet it still feels very much like a safe space to sit, watch the world go by and have a mocktail or a coffee in a safe and friendly space.A lovely environment to be in alone or with friends. I have eaten lunch quite happily on my own in this environment (whereas I would not like to do in a pub - yep old fashioned but still), and felt very comfortable as a lone female in this environment. The afternoon cream tea is my next treat when I'm next in the vicinity.

This is such a find. We went on our first ever trip to Liverpool, for breakfast (delicious and great value) and vowed we would return. Every time we go, we have a good experience. It is such a good vibe here, whether busy or quiet, it's a relaxing place to sit alone or with friends. It has a real local vibe, you can find out what's on in the area, hear local bands, there's great food and drinks (non-alcoholic), and a really warm welcome.
