I live near Ashbourne, but I have friends in derby that have eaten at the chestnut that recommended it to me. I gave it a try an myself and my wife were not disapointed. Good Hospitality nice atmosphere and fantastic food at a very reasonable price. Will certainly be going back, again and again.

I decided to have a get together of about 60 friends at the Chestnut for my birthday. Wow the family run business just couldn't do enough to help make my get together enjoyable for me and my friends. The food was excellent (I wouldn't have expected anything else). and the atmosphere was brilliant. The Resident DJ Ben played excellent music and catered for any request. A big thank you to the Chestnut from Me

Over the years I've been here a few times and my experiences have bounced between ok and poor. The location is great and there is lots of parking available and it's easy to get to. Great TV and pool table. Service was poor, the barman spent his time chatting on the phone organising his weekend rather than serving customers. We were waiting a while to be served, while other staff chatting with their friends and watched tv. When he did get round to us it's like we had given him extra work...so What we had been waiting a while... 😔 The food I've found between ok at times and the last trip I had a mix grill was poor. It was too spicy (perhaps so I would buy more beer? Almost like someone had put triple as was needed) mostly wings (end of month or low on stock?) and very dry meat. It was just a bad experience and I left it. The pub itself is showing its age, there is a large patch of worn out lino as you enter and same on the sit down dining area to the right, as you enter. Overall it's nothing that would put me off but it's not attractive. The environment was terrible, just a lot of people swearing and getting drunk in the main bar area. The dining area were a few groups of people louder than each other and the sound really echoed and made it worse. It's not a place for kids or families or unless you find sitting with people that have to swear every other word acceptable. That has been my experience every trip I have had. It was my last trip to this place. Lots of other places around with better food, better environment, better service and cheaper.

We had a takeaway curry from the Chestnut Tree last Friday night, and weren't disappointed. The authentic Indian food was equal to the best I have ever tasted. We know a few Indian people who regularly have food here and so that is as good an advert as it gets! While I was waiting in the bar for my order to be completed, I could see into the kitchen and was very impressed with the 2 chefs preparing food, and also the cleanliness of their surroundings. I could also see the small restaurant room which looked smart if a little basic. The pub part consists of a long bar and plenty of seating in the room, and this was very busy. There is not a huge choice on the menu, but everything we had was top quality and very tasty. Can't wait for our next takeaway. Recommended.

After visiting the bar numerous times over the last couple of months and enjoying the atmosphere, I decided to try the restaurant which is joined with the pub, me and some friends sat down and looked at the menu.. We decided to try the offer on the back of a menu with a selection of options to choose from with a curry, rice or nan and chips for a set price of £9. When going to the bar to order our food we was shocked to see how rude the man serving us was. Telling me.. ‘we don’t do that anymore’ and its been off the menu for years.... so why is it still there I thought? Either way.. the individual items I wanted was only 50/60p difference in price from the £9 set meal but he didn’t seem bothered about communicating to help out in pleasing his guest. We thought about leaving then from his attitude but decided to stay and try something else, which again the same rude member of staff pretty much chucked our plates on the table and our sauces to go with the food. The food turned out to be really nice although the noise from the bar is off putting when wanting to sit and enjoy it. Because of the old bald man who defiantly needs some 2018 manners we won’t be going back.

Well i didn't think it could happen but visited the Chestnut for a third time and it was even better than my previous two visits, how does that work? I went with the lads on a Saturday night outing to the Chestnut, we ordered up big with mixed grills, spring roll starters and a host of curries and when it came to pay we were all amazed at the price to the extent that we asked Billie, the owner if the bill was correct? we got a response of 'well you can always pay me more' we actually went back to our tables an calculated what we had ordered, and were amazed that it was right wow all this food for such little money. Again, for those people who have read my previous review about the exterior of the building just give the place a try, you'll soon forget about the exterior and just enjoy the food. A must for anybody that likes real, authentic indian food at a very reasonable price. Forget about city centre indian restaurants with plush seating and neon lighting, trust me this is the place to be as reflected in my revised rating of 5 star. If you want to pay loads of money for decent food then hit the city scence, however if you want real value for money then this is the palce to be trust me!!

I had been recommended to this spot by a few people but never got round to going. However, I visited the Chestnut last Saturday night with my wife and another couple and to be I was slightly apprehensive as it was a shot in the dark having last been in the pub many years ago. I have passed the pub on numerous occasions without really paying any attention to it, as the external appearance did not appear to suggest that it was a place that I should revisit. Boy was I wrong, forget the external appearance and get yourself inside and as the old adage suggests, you should never judge a book by it's cover fits this place to a tee. As you go in, the restaurant is situated on the right with the bar and public area on the left. Don't get me wrong it's not the Ritz, however, the décor is still welcoming and suggest that some thought has gone into the design. My wife goes by the rule, that if the toilets are clean which these were then the restaurant/pub has passed her inspection. After being shown to the restaurant area, we ordered drinks from the bar and I must say that the choice of the house white for the ladies was a good one as it was good value for money and the ladies really enjoyed it. Our starters of fish and kebab were all superb, well presented and they tasted delicious. Our mains of lamb and chicken , ordered with plain and egg fried rice were equally delicious, as were the freshly made nans that was ordered by the ladies, and rotti that was ordered by my friend. The price of all 4 meals including drinks were excellent, and if we had eaten the same meal in some of Derby's city centre restaurants I'm sure that we would have been paying another £20-30 more. The service was quick, friendly but not intrusive which was nice. In fact, myself and my wife enjoyed it so much we came back the following Saturday night this time with our daughter who equally enjoyed the experience as much as we did the previous week . Over all I would say to anybody that likes their curries, they most definitely give this place a go. The fact that it is essentially a pub that serves excellent Indian food is a bonus and don't be put off by the exterior as you'll definitely be missing out on something special.

Following the excellent Trip Advisor reviews we went for lunch on a Saturday, as few of the Indian restaurants are open then. The place was hosting a screened football match so was full of blokes. I asked if they had anywhere else for us to sit and they do have a dining area. There was one family in there. It lacked atmosphere, but then most places would with so few people in.The food was tasty, the lamb extremely tender as was the chicken. The fish pakora was nice, but the kebab was more like a spicy sausage in texture. Service was good from the barman.I would not make a special trip here again, but if you were passing by & fancied a reasonable curry with your mates, you could do much worse.

After being recommend to try this place by several work mates we finally did. We opted for take away as this suited us the best and all we can say is "Why did we leave it until now!" Service is very friendly, efficient and nothing's too much trouble for staff who are more than happy to offer advice on what you are ordering and will adjust the spiciness of the food to suit your own personal taste. There's a good selection of choices on the menu and the prices are very reasonable too.We ordered a couple of different starters, 2 completely different styled main courses and a selection of side dishes.Without exception all the food tasted beautiful and was cooked perfectly (nothing worse than luke warm or dried up takeaway food). We could tell The food is traditionally made and freshly prepared for each order. For example The samosa's were properly made because they were crispy and light and were full of very tasty filling. The meat used in the mix grill was really fresh,of high quality, flavoursome and very tender. We also got a good variety of different meats (on and off the bone) which to us is another good sign of a quality food establishment. Plus the mini salads that came with both our meal choices was the freshest we had ever had, there was no soggy brown lettuce to be found. We also really enjoyed The spicy chips which have just right amount of flavour without over powering the actual chip flavour. Also the naan bread were the best we had ever had, they were beautifully light, not stodgy at all and once again had a lovely flavour to them without being overly strong of garlic etc. the portion sizes are very good especially considering the food being reasonably priced. So overall we enjoyed all elements of the superbly made tasty dishes we ordered and we are looking forward to our next visit to The Chestnut Tree. We highly recommend people give this restaurant/take away a try as we don't think you'll be disappointed with what you get to eat.

We'd ordered the food before we arrived and the catering team were well organized and had everything in hand. The food was superb - everything from hot curries to burgers - plentiful portions and as advertised on the menu. My only disappointment was the long gap between starters and mains but sixteen meals would take some preparation. We went for tea rather than a night out. We were the only people eating in the restaurant side of the pub - it was about 6.30 on a Thursday. The decor is clean and modern but the place lacks something- a bit of Asian colour or table runners? The menu is great as there are only a few curry dishes as well as burgers, fajitas and grill type foods. We ordered a biriani and a chicken meethi, a rice and a nan. The biriani was very good, very fresh with good flavour and lots of succulent chicken. For the purists the meat was not on the bone but very tasty non the less. Hubby reported that his dish was very tasty too. The only negative would be the nan which was very thin- almost transparent and a bit greasy. That said we will be going again as it was nice to have a curry that tasted fresh rather than cooked last Tuesday!

The Chestnut Tree is essentially an average estate pub serving above average Indian food. The pub part has pool table, big screen TV and a few noisy locals playing pool and watching football. At one end of the pub behind a sreened-off area is the restaurant part, although we were told we could eat anywhere in the pub. Menus are quite limited but I don't have a problem with that if the food is good - which it was. First time we visited here we didn't expect too much as the pub was nearly empty and just one other couple eating in the restaurant. But we were pleasantly surprised by the standard of food and quality of meat used. Its Punjabi-style - but they also do Fajitas and burgers.Cost for a meal for 2 was about £30 with a few drinks; not cheap but not too expensive. It's not the sort of place you'd take your wife for a romantic meal, but if you're in the area and want a decent quality Indian meal then it's worth visiting. We were told at the start that it was cash only so no unpleasant surprise when we came to pay.

Firstly, The Chestnut Tree is a Public House - you're eating in a pub not a restuarant. However, they have a seperate area of the pub to eat in with tables and chairs - it doesnt have the atmosphere\ambience of a restaurant so it would be unfair on the establishment to compare it to one - despite their best efforts - it is best compared to an 'Ember Inns Chain' experience but the food is cooked fresh opposed to heated up from the freezer out of pre-made paste!Whilst they dont have a huge variety on their menu - the food that is served/offered is traditional Punjabi and it is divine! It is is what other restuarants charge a premium for and label as Desi - none of the korma, bhuna, madras crap that is branded as Indian Style. I'm of Punjabi Indian origin and have ate at Anoki in Derby several times over the years - as a comparrisson - the food served at The Chestnut Tree is Authentic Indian food cooked by Punjabi Chefs where the spices are enfused within the butter ghee and the meat - you can taste and see the fresh coriander in the curry! Whereas Anoki which is Indian Style but cooked by chefs from Bangladesh - where they use coriander paste and fry the meat in oil and adding the various spices enfused within the coriander paste and colouring after the meat is golden - the taste is in the sauce but the ambience is 5* hence they're number 1 in Derby. You really have to eat here for the quality of the food if you can overcome that you're eating in a Pub - the flavour and spices enfused within the meat - on the bone and boneless are only comparable to my grandmothers home cooked style of food. 5* for Food. I read the previous reviews and paid in cash

We had a meal here with friends one night after reading a review on Tripadvisor. I would advise strongly against going. The pub itself (NOT a restaurant) is very odd, with a peculiar atmosphere. I readily accept that the food you eat is the most important aspect of dining out, and so I can live with 'quirky/character' etc. However The Chestnut Tree lacks any of this, and in fact feels downright uncomfortable. All of the curry sauces have the flavour and texture of those you'd find in a 'stir though sauce' and lack flavour or substance (hint of chicken). Yuk.However the loudest warning bell for all future customers would toll for the end of the evening:The bill for four of us amounted to not far short of £90. We went to pay at the bar and were told that the card machine had broken and that we must pay in cash. We had to scrape the money together between us (I had the distinct impression we weren't going to be able to leave without handing over the pound notes). We were not told at any point during the evening that there was a problem with the payment system. In fact the locals seemed to be managing to pay without difficulty! Think twice people, think twice.

When I visited, I found the set up and the interior impressive, as I have visited many pubs in Birmingham where I am from, and have not seen a pub done up to such a high standard. We ordered the mix grill and a few curries; the mix grill was really tasty where it was cooked just right and not rushed and burnt like many mix grills I have had. We were welcome by staff and recommended a few options as we were stuck. Staff were friendly and sociable and also very helpful, were asking if everything was fine and if we needed anything else. We ordered the fish pakoreh, which i personally really enjoyed, and would visit again for that just alone. Very impressed that derby has such a lively place with brilliant food. Will be visiting again soon and coming up soon with the rest of the Birmingham clan.

I had wrote a genuine, honest review of this "restaurant" in October last year, and for some reason Tripadvisor removed it without informing me, I have re-posted this review so that you can all make an informed decision on whether to visit this place or not.Review:I ordered a takeaway from here based on the good tripadvisor reviews, and was very disappointed with the quality of the food. I arrived at around 9pm on a Wednesday and the pub was deserted albeit a few locals. I ordered spicy chips, chilli chicken, amrtisar fish, punjabi pakora, desi chicken curry, 2 naan breads (I asked for them with no butter, but they were soaking in butter when I got back to my hotel. The spicy chips were tasty, but most of them were very greasy soaking the brown paper bag they came in, also they were undercooked. The chilli chicken was passable, but the meat was chicken thigh meat, not breast, and had a bit of fat in there. The amritsar fish was deep fried and again soaking the brown bag with oil, and the quality of the fish was fatty and soft. The punjabi pakora's were ok, but were slightly greasy and looked red in colour, when my (punjabi) mum makes them, they are usually yellow/brown due to gram flour colour not coloured with red food colouring! The desi chicken was average, but again contained chewy chicken thigh meat. There were no free sauces for my starters either. All in all, I would not recommend eating here, I have high standards for food, and unfortunately these were not met at the chestnut tree. Make your own mind up, I know I won't be visiting this restaurant/pub again, quality food is the most important thing for me, not fatty meat and greasy food. The only positive thing I have to say about the restaurant is their service was very good, but what good is service if the food is terrible? If the owner reads this review, please take it as constructive criticism in order to find ways to improve your food, and try not to be defensive.

This pub was recomended to me by a work colleague, so on New Years Day my friends and I decided to give it a try. When we entered the pub we all commented how nice the decor was. It had a very warm, modern and spacious feel about it. As we walked towards the bar we were Immediately approached by the bar tender who asked what we would like to drink. The bar tender was extremely polite and friendly and seemed to know we had not been here before. He quickly got us chatting and made us feel at home. We later learnt that his name was Sunny. We had a few drinks and decided to try the food. The pub was starting to fill by this time as it was 7pm but everyone that came into the pub spoke to us, and seemed very friendly. We were shown into the restaurants dining area which was lovely and again very modern looking. Our table had been set for us and it looked a treat. My friends and I love curry and we could have any curry from the menu spiced to your individual taste. The presentation of the food looked excellent but tasted even better (if that could be possible). We all thouroughly enjoyed the meal and we will certainly be returning with our partners in tow very soon. The atmosphere in the restaurant was vibrant, with other diners chatting, laughing and enjoying themselves. After leaving the restaurant we decided to have another drink as there was a DJ playing some great songs. We ended up staying for the remainder of the evening, having to get taxis home as I had originally drove my car with this pub being some distance from where we all live. We had an absolutley fantastic time.We certainly don't agree with the review that says the restaurant was "bare and forlorn" The pub and restaurant decor was very upbeat and modern and I can only presume the the individual who wrote that needs to take a trip to an opticians. To sum up this pub, we would like to say the staff were extremely helpful and polite, the food was to die for, everywhere was exceptionally clean and the atmoshere was fantastic. We highly recommend you pay this pub and restaurant a visit you will definately not be disappointed. .We have already made a date to return. We came because of the reviews, and we wanted to experience the brilliant food. A really good restaurant should have good food, service and atmosphere. Unfortunately we arrived early, and a few hardened drinkers were in and we didn't feel it was the right place to eat. The restaurant at the side seemed bare and forlorn, so we weren't inquisitive enough to try the food. Some restaurants have such good atmosphere you can be the only diner and still have a good meal. If this changed I'd try their food in an instant.

This by far has to be one of the best pubs I've been too.. Not only the atmosphere was good but also the people behind the bar were so helpful.. Polite and enjoyable to talk too.. The food was very mouth watering.. Different to what I've had before.. The food was cooked to the spice I wanted.. Reminded me of the restaurant nandos :).. I was fully satisfied and would defianantly recommend this pub to you.

Originally being a birmingham native, there are many places to eat and many would agree the standard of wining and dining in birmingham is quite high. With the varieties of places to eat and quality of resturaunts to choose from, its usually quite a diffucult task to choose what to eat, with the diverse cultures and food available. Veering out of Birmingham, there was a meeting which had been arranged in Derby, which i had to attend...Originally my perception that we were to meet in a ''pub'' were quite unusual in some aspects, however my perceptions of quite a hostile environment couldn't have been more wrong. Not only were the people in there amazing in the sense, so friendly but the food which i expected it to be typically friend, grimey food, was nothing the type. There was so much options to choose from, which was suprising and the quality of the food was of a high standard. It's now a usual for me, that anytime im in derby i go to The Chestnut Tree to dine, not only with colleagues, but friends and family too. Would recommend this place to anyone and everyone!!

I visited at 5 pm, fascinated by the other reviews which showed that people who come here really like it, to a greater degree than other restaurants. It was quiet with a few people at the bar and no other diners. The menu is almost all spicy eastern food, I took advice and had a mild chicken curry which was served quickly, very well presented and the chicken was beautifully tender. As you can see from the pictures, this is a pub with dining area and a good menu. It would make a good stop if you are in the area travelling on the A5111 Ring Road or staying at the Premier Inn. I wouldn't suggest taking a taxi to dine here if you were staying down town, there are other good places near the rail station for example.

Decided to try this restaurant based on the reviews on this sitemy friend was dubious as they had been here before although this was a few years ago, should have listened!I must admit i do have high standards but also an open mind but there is no way i would be able to recommend this restaurant, the décor was to a reasonable standard and staff pleasant and tentativein regard to the foodthe starter (the mixed grill) was satisfactory, nothing really special especially considering the price which which was not cheap considering this was really a pub with a food section.the Main was very poor indeed (chicken desi) there was so much salt in in we could not eat it. there was no point in complaining so we paid and left.not sure how the other reviews can recommend this establishment, they must have some very low standards or need to be taken with a pinch of salt!!so in summary avoid

The other restaurants in Derby are well over priced in mho and don't taste as good. Enjoy if you decide to go.

The food here is awesome! It is freshly cooked in an open kitchen, and it is probably some of the tastiest food I have ever eaten. We have only just discovered this pub, but have eaten here 3 times this week because the food is incredibly tasty and very reasonably priced. On average, a two-course meal with a couple of drinks has cost us £15-£20 per person. As a vegetarian, I would totally recommend the Manchurian Gobi (cauliflower in an indo-chinese crispy coating), Chilli-Paneer Hong-Kong Style (paneer cheese coated in a spicy sauce), Shahi Paneer - a creamy paneer curry, quite delicious. Today we tried the lunch-time Thaali option. It included curried potatoes and a chickpea curry, with freshly made nan bread, rice, salad and yoghurt. An absolute steal at £4.99 per person! Again it was incredibly tasty and a perfect lunchtime treat. The spicy chips are divine. The nan bread is freshly made to order, our favourite being the cheese and chilli nan.My partner has had the Lamb Saagwala, Chilli Chicken Tawa Hong Kong Style, and Chinese Samosas during our visits earlier this week. Today he had the Lamb Thaali, which included curried potatoes and a lamb curry, with freshly made nan bread, rice, salad and yogurt. We also had spicy chips today and a drink each and our total bill came to less than £15.The food here is consistently good. You can actually see the chefs making your food in the open kitchen. All of the staff are friendly and welcoming, and the manager has made time to speak to us on every visit.I'm looking forward to trying more of the veggie options and my partner is planning to sample virtually everything on the menu.We just wish that we had known about The Chestnut Tree in Derby when we got married a few weeks ago, as we would have asked you to cater for our wedding in total confidence that our guests would receive some of the best food they had ever tasted.I can't recommend The Chestnut Tree Derby and your Indo Chinese menu, together with your friendly hospitality highly enough. Superb!

Visited the new and improved Chestnut Tree recently with a few friends for drinks and food and had a really top night. The atmosphere was so good we ended up staying in there instead of heading into town as we had planned! The bar has a full range of drinks and the service was second to none. The decor and seating was great too. However, the best thing of all was the food. So suprised by the choice and variety, not what you would expect from a normal pub menu. We were a bit sceptical as to whether they could deliver on what they were promising but my word did they deliver!! The food was as good as you can expect from any restaurant never mind a pub. They have definatley raised the bar for 'pub grub'!
