The Duke William in Derbyshire Dales

Decided to book The Duke William for an evening meal after reading the reviews. The staff were very welcoming and very pleasant. The food we both ordered Pie, 1 x steak and ale and the other steak and kidney, the gravy was very tasty, but just not enough meat in the dish. I think I counted 3 pieces in my dish, and my husband said his was the same, which was a shame because after reading the reviews we expected better for the price we paid. I’m only pleased we got chips, as they mopped all the gravy up in the dish, The restaurant was also a cold room so it made me feel uncomfortable. It also didn’t help that another party who was leaving opened the exit door but left it open while they where talking and saying there goodbyes, another words they where not bothered about anyone one else eating in the restaurant, So after our food we decided to move into the bar area for a few drinks after we had our food, as it was much cosier. Would we return again if we visited Matlock. I don’t think so Sorry!!

Another excellent Sunday Carvery. Very generous portions and a fantastic selection of vegetables. Delicious. Nice friendly pub that any Carvery Connoisseur cannot afford to miss. Thoroughly recommended.

We absolutely love this place , try and go there at least twice a year for the weekend in our motor home. Great food, toilets and showers always spotless. Landlord, landlady and all staff are fabulous. Some lovely walks around the area too. Cannot wait until our next visit.

Went for our work Xmas meal everyone enjoyed their options. There was loads of veg and the turkey was fabulous and moist. Small middle no cranberry but still was a lovely meal. Will come back for a meal for sure

Used to come most weekends with my late father and always enjoyed our visits, three of us came again today and the Sunday Carvery was as excellent as it always was. All cleared our plates and really enjoyed our visit, I chose beef and gammon of the four meats available, perfectly cooked and a huge selection of vegetables. So pleased Phil and Jan still run this super pub (and the staff were doing a great job with a very busy Sunday lunchtime too). Will be back again very soon!

No fuss really good pub food, large tasty portions, it was really really good, the garlic bread, mmmmm, I do not normally recommend places, but go here, you won't be disappointed..trying to decide if I can fit pudding in....oh what heck. I shall give it a go, just a very short walk from the middle of Matlock and so worth while.

Classic Bike Meet Yet again the Classic bike meet on the first Wednesday of every month was a roaring success. Lots of classic motorcycles, super food and drink and the staff as ever were great.

Was recommended this pub for their good home-cooked food. It didn't disappoint, Paul had butchers sausages, with cheese and onion creamed mashed potatoes and chefs special meat juices gravy. I had oven baked chicken breast in cheese and garlic sauce, with chips, peas and salad. Two well cooked meals and 2 decent pints. Highly recommend.

The venue,food,staff & service was exellent.My Friend & I had a Fabulous Sunday carvery then watched rugby with friendly locals.A warm welcome was given to us by the proprietors & we will definitely return

Had a run out to Matlock with the family and booked in for Sunday lunch here. The staff were very friendly and the carvery was absolutely beautiful. (I usually shy away from Sunday dinner out as they never taste as good as home). The gravy made it for me...just the right consistency and yumminess. Was impressed with choice of 6 veg not to mention the roasties, mash and parsnip chips

We stopped on the caravan site for one night. We were a bit apprehensive because of reviews saying the church bells kept people awake but they didn’t wake us. Sunday dinner in the pub was great.

Food and ale very nice, unfortunately only one ale on over the weekend

Had a lovely bangers and mash and the garlic bread was yum. Make sure you try Jan's special gravy

I stayed just for one night with my dog in their campsite, before a race on the Sunday (Dovedale dash), really good facilities, very friendly staff, cracking stay, excellent food and beer, dog friendly

First time here and loved it, booked and stayed 3 nights in caravan as it has facilities for caravans campervans and tents (booking advisable), owners really nice and food really nice with generous portions, definitely recommend and we will be back again

We only found the Duke by chance as we couldn't find anywhere to park in Matlock, and we were starving. Just out of the town with a large carpark to the rear of the pub, Beer was good and the food was fantastic. Well worth a visit.

The best Sunday carvery in the area, the owner's are lovely and it's a lovely scenic pub. The beer garden is a sun trap. Clean and plenty of seating. There is also a campsite which is very reasonable.

I had my first pint of Abbot’s ale at this pub after a long time . What an amazingly taste and I thoroughly enjoyed it. But the real highlight of our visit was was the warmth of the landlady , Janet, and her good friend Frances . It was so wonderful to converse with that family and they made us feel so welcome . I would highly recommend this pub for its traditional design and the beer was out of this world. Than you so much for a lovely start to our vacation in Matlock !!!

We went to the Duke William for Sunday lunch and it was excellent the owners and all the staff very friendly and the food was extremely good and plentiful, and i am not complaining but it is the only Carvery i have ever been to where you are served with the roast potatoes, and these are my favourite thing on a Carvery and i would like to get what i want, and not be served with these, we will without a doubt return this is not a complaint and i have recommended the Duke William to Family and friends

Camped here for a few days and booked Sunday lunch. The lunch was one of the best I've had when eating out. The gravy is fabulous, the meat kept moist and plenty of veg to choose from. Camp site was nice and quiet, within walking distance to Matlock and Matlock Bath.

Run by a Great couple, food a facilities clean and first rate. Camping basic but tidy, hot showers 👍helpful staff 👍😁

A lovely traditional pub with its own camping field some pitches have electric hook up. The food is reasonable priced and good quality. Sunday roast is delicious and plentiful and the owners are very friendly. We had a very enjoyable stop over with showers and toilets available 24/7. The whole place is kept spotlessly clean.

Went for dinner with my son before visiting Matlock Town fc v Derby County. Food portions were massive and extremely good value. Friendly and welcoming staff, will definitely return if we’re ever in Matlock again. 5⭐️

Absolutely loved the food here. The portion size was huge and tasted absolutely beautiful. The man behind the bar seemed pleasant enough. Toilets nice and clean. Not much car parking space tho.

Where do I start! The landlord was pleasant on the first night. However the very next morning he switched. His attitude was very dismissive. We payed £10 per person per night to pitch a tent up in his field. With additional £7.50 for the use...

Probably the best carvery I've ever had, will take over an hour for me to go just for Sunday lunch but definitely worth it.

Had gorgeous food at the Duke William. The Creamy Garlic Mushrooms were an absolute delight and the garlic bread that accompanied it was delicious, it's a big portion so me and my husband shared. Our main food was delicious too and cooked perfectly

We were there camping and had Sunday lunch as well. The lunch was very good. Camping - wise my issue was the bells! The church was at it at least every half hour including through the night. Takes a few nights to tune them out. Great location though

Visited here yesterday with 5 friends. We didn’t have a reservation but we were seated immediately and given a warm welcome. We all enjoyed lovely home cooked meat pies, proper chips and fresh veg. 6 clean plates later, we called the cook to our table...

We happened by this pub while on a weekend stay in a cottage and ended up there 2 of the 4 days we stayed. It was a warm welcome, like your local pub but on holiday. The staff were spot on, chatty if you wanted or attentively pulling pints if quiet is your thing. Locals and holiday makers were mixing easily, the atmosphere was great. We ate here twice, and I would heartily recommend the food, which ranges from honest home cooked favourites, to flavourful vegan, to an amazingly huge Sunday roast, all well cooked and served. Cannot recommend this place highly enough, an absolute gem of a pub!

We have stayed on the campsite a few times. The facilities are always good. A warm welcome on arrival. The pub is great. The tap room is dog friendly and there’s a nice outdoor sitting area. Food is home made and excellent really nice Sunday carvery. Looking forward to our next visit 😊

Very poor experience. Booked camping field but waterlogged and landlord cud have advised. We got stuck on the field as did every motorhome and caravan so we all got cramped in car park at £20 ..night. don't go here

Very pleasant surroundings with a great atmosphere. The carvery was perfect and the staff attentive. Large carpark that caters for campervans too. Nothing at all to complain about.

Visited yesterday after wandering past with friends and we didn’t regret it. Such a friendly welcome and the food was delicious! The lamb and mint pie was class. It was super relaxing to watch the match with a couple of drinks.

Visited yesterday booked a table for 8 for a Sunday carvery and wanted to write a review as the service and food deserved a 5 star rating. We came out saying this was the best carvery we've ever had, it's the sort of pub you would want as your local because as soon as you walk in you felt in a warm, friendly environment and somewhere we would go out of our way to return too. Excellent well done 👏

Fab little camp site in a great location for Matlock, Matlock Bath, Heights of Abraham and Gulliver's Kingdom. Bar and resteraunt on site, with great food (enormous portions, so go empty bellied). Camp site is peaceful, and the toilet block/showers perfectly adequate for your needs....

Really good portion of chips for kids. Nice area with outside tables. Good pint. Clean and tidy.

Looked on website and on menu in restaurant. Yet items we not available. Should really update both . Save disappointment when you get there. Food we did have was defo ok. Just a big shame .

It's a great meeting place for classic bikers on the first Wednesday of the month..The main criticism is the price of a pint of lemonade...£3.50..outrageous since there is no alcohol tax and it must cost pence to buy..must be 500% profit on that.
