The Raj in Breckland

Went to the raj today for the all you could eat buffet. Had my starters , & then was told by a very rude waiter that he wasyhappy with us using a fresh plate for our mains!!! Very poor customer service

Travelling and in need of some lunch on New Year's Eve we fortunately chanced upon the Raj, despite its out-of-the- way location. Any initial 'shall we, shan't we' reluctance was soon overcome by the warm and attentive staff - and the relaxed behaviour of other diners, family groups and friends, all probably local and regular customers. There was no problem and plenty of good advice for our one vegan, and the food and it's service were both excellent! The Raj proved an unexpected find in an unexpected place, excellent staff and wonderful Indian Cuisine - all in all an absolute delight!

It’s a Sunday buffet. Selection is limited - all chicken dishes and one meat only. And worse of all, only given ‘one’ plate for all the self-serving meal ! When a spoon accidentally touch the plate and get someone’s germs. Where is the food safety rules ? Disappointed.

Excellent food and service! Very professional staff! Clean, bright and modern surroundings! Couldn’t fault it! Ideal for couples, families or groups! Very reasonable prices!

The best has just got better winning an award for one of best Indian restaurants in East Anglia . Great tasting Indian cuisine and Sunday buffet is amazing to eat as much as you like and so many dishes to choose from as well. There are special deals as well on Wednesday and Thursday. Well worth a visit.

We really like the Raj and have visited many times. The quality of food is superb. The service is second to none and the value for money is brilliant. The staff are very welcoming and the food is cooked promptly. The beer is also good value, which is a welcome change these days. My top tip, the chicken vindaloo. A really well cooked dish with just the right amount of heat. Best indian in Thetford and arguably in Norfolk.

We collected a takeaway from here whilst staying at Forest Holidays. It was just an 11 minute drive (but apparently The Raj do deliver) It was a really tasty curry - not greasy or oily. Great value for money also with decent portions. I had a vegetable Biryani which I’d recommend Would 100% return if in the area again, the restaurant also looked really nice if you wanted to dine in.

Easily the best Indian restaurant in which I have eaten and I lived in India for a while a few years ago. The Sunday buffet is fantastic value with excellent food, very tasty and a place we go back to again and again. They have a very capable chef who manages to get the balance absolutely right between the meals being tasty without just being full of spicey heat. You can taste the different dishes rather than just loads of spice that can so easily ruin a good a meal. The staff could not be more helpful. Always attentive, always friendly always with something nice to say and they take the trouble to make sure that you really enjoy the experience of eating there. What more can I say other than go there and eat, you will not regret it and will be back for more over and over again.

We were staying at Thorpe Forest and looked up Restaurants that delivered, we phoned in the afternoon to confirm that they would deliver to our log cabin at Forest Holidays and this was confirmed, That evening we placed our order and the food arrived on time and very hot. The standard of the food was excellent and portions very good, we love Indian food and this was of the highest standard, definitely would recommend!!!

I have to say this is the best Tandoori Salmon ever. Cooked to perfection. Food that is heavenly. The rice perfect and salad fresh and crispy. Portions generous. The staff friendly and courteous and professional. If you are staying, visiting or travelling close to Thetford I highly recommend you come to this wonderful place.

We got a takeaway to centre parcs as the reviews for the Indian on site were not great. The guys here took our ordered and delivered on time within the hour. The food did not disappoint! Very well priced and very authentic - we would highly recommend.

I have been here several times for their Sunday Buffet, every time I am pleased with the quality of food and friendliness of Staff. Although the selection is not huge it certainly makes up for in tastiness. I will always happily return here.

Some of the best food we have had. We like hot and nearly always go for the same thing wherever we eat, and this is seriously good. Really like how they serve the naan, which saves us pulling it to pieces between us. Great place.

Recently moved to Thetford and heading back for Raj takeaway number 4 this month.My family has tried different dishes each time and we have not been disappointed.Friendly smiling staff, who appreciate their customers.We are looking forward to when the restaurant is able to open again and we can find the time to go take a proper sit down meal inside.I would be happy to travel from out of town to go to this restaurant, but I am extra lucky because it is just 5 minutes walk from my doorstep.

The food in this place is absolutely delicious. What made it a better experience of how friendly the staff and owners were, as they honestly went above and beyond to make the experience enjoyable for all customers.

We have been customers of the Raj for many years now and have never had a disappointing meal or takeaway. We’ve visited as a couple and in groups of up to 15 on busy nights and quiet nights. We can’t say a bad word about the food or the service. It really is a brilliant restaurant. Whenever we’ve ordered a takeaway it’s been bang on time, despite us living in East Harling.The staff are so friendly, and they go above and beyond with menu recommendations and if you’re after something a touch different it’s never a problem. The food is very fresh in taste and extremely reasonable in price, even more so if you visit on Banquet night on Wed or Thursday nights. During lockdown the team have been busy updating their carpets, walls, decor- the restaurant looks better than ever and tables are well spaced out. We can’t speak highly enough of this restaurant. We love Indian food and this is our favourite restaurant by miles.

We have been to this restaurant before for meals and takeaways. Saturday wasn't nice at all. The mushroom rice was full water and the Malaya chicken was like a Korma. Had no veg in it not even a pea, the Bombay potato was literally potato and a like warm sauce. My husband had a chicken dish with coconut rice, the rice was so dry it wasn't pleasant and the pashwiri bread was cold all in all it wasn't nice.I've told relatives who are hopefully coming up may bank holiday weekend that it was a lovely restaurant, so there would be around 14 of us now I'm not do sure about booking this.Very disappointed

We booked online for collection and was told there would be a 1 hour 15 minute wait, this turned into 2 hours. We were given a bottle of beer for the extended wait. When we returned home, the food was cold, tasteless and inedible, really bad. Called the resteraunt immediately to explain. Had to return to the restaurant the following day for a refund as they didn't have the facility to refund to the card. Nothing offered for the inconvenience. Disastrous.

First time I've used this restaurant. We thought we'd treat ourselves to a lockdown take away. Delivery from Thetford to Brandon was £5 but the food was so worth the charge! We've had a lot of Indian meals and this was by far the best I have tasted. The food tasted fresh and was still warm when arrived. We can't wait to be able to visit the restaurant in person!

Me and my partner had a take away from The Raj, what can I say the food was amazing and very tasty, portion sizes are great compared to other Indian restaurants in Thetford. Will definitely be returning it’s my favourite Indian meal so far. Thank you The Raj.

We regularly go to the RAJ, always enjoyed our meals but today’s was truly outstanding. Credit where credits due. Piping hot , quick service and the flavours were amazing, literally can’t fault anything. Looking forward to our next already.

Visited the Raj a few times and food is taking longer and longer to come out the kitchen. Rang for collection was told 30-40 mins arrive 40 minutes and then stood waiting in shop for 20 mins. I don’t mind waiting for food but set realistic times when people are ordering.

We've just had our second delivery from The Raj and very good it was too. We all ordered two mains each, with some going into the freezer for another day.Good-sized portions mean that we can have the leftovers for breakfast. Cold curry on toast, with a fried egg... bloomin' delicious.We didn't use the "Just Eat" service but phoned the restaurant direct. They deliver for a small fee and for us, living in an extremely rural spot, this is perfect.Thank you Raj !!

I went here with my family in late November. The food was excellent good choice, very well presented, and the service was very good. We were a fairly large party but the food was serviced very efficiently. I would certainly go again overall very nice experience

Reasonably authentic food, great choice and the staff are very friendly and helpful. For a Friday evening I was surprised to get a table easily which also slightly bothered me but as it turned out no need to have been worried as all was good. Would visit again.

A thoroughly enjoyable meal! My only dislike is that when we arranged to take the remaining food home, a large portion of it was missing. This is extremely disappointing given the generous tip that was left. We were left hurt by this!

Despite their "60 minute delivery" promise our food took 1 hour 27 minutes to deliver, and when it arrived, they attempted to charge £2 more than the price of the food came to. Very poor overall.

I have had a take out from The Raj a few times and it is usually an enjoyable experience, however, this time, it has been awful. Firstly, I ordered on line and mistakenly selected pay cash on delivery. Having realised the mistake, I immediately called the restaurant to advise that I would be collecting, the website stating a 15% discount on collection orders, no caveat mentioned.On arrival, I was quoted full price and told that the 15% discount was only for telephone orders and when ordered and paid for through the website, only a 10% discount is applied (still not what the front page of the website states), however this was still not applied to the order. After waiting for a while I was apologised to and was informed that the delivery driver had taken our meal by mistake and had been called back, but would be 5 mins. I finally got the food 10-15 mins later. Upon leaving I was given a bottle of red wine, which was appreciated. By the time that I had got the food back home, it was look warm and had to be reheated. I didn't fancy cooking my own dinner, hence the takeaway. Everything was ok with the other food ordered, however, I realised that the mango and tamarind sauce for my curry, Malai Chicken Tikka, didn't arrive. Fed up with the whole experience, I didn't even bother calling to advise of the mistake as I wasnt going to wait an hour for this to be rectified. I just ate my dry curry with my Saturday night less enjoyable.

We have used this restaurant for many years - the food has always been good, and what made it our Indian restaurant of choice in Thetford was the great customer service. Staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful. This evening we decided to order a takeout from them, and having looked at their website for the menu, we saw that they now offered online ordering, so this is how I placed the order. I wont go into lengthy details of the issues that occurred when ordering; suffice to say that the online ordering process is flawed and will need to be corrected. What annoyed me most when I went in to collect the order was the offhand manner in which I was told that I must have done something incorrectly and there was nothing they could do about it. Then one of their staff attempted to place an order to demonstrate to me, and came across the exact same issue. They begrudgingly gave me 10% collection discount (their homepage says 15%, but that's another issue). It's unfortunate, but the manner in which our complaint was dealt with means that we won't be using this restaurant again.

The service is poor and the staff were arguing for 2 hours non stop and some of the other staff were rude and obnoxious the food wasn’t that great I wouldn’t go back there.

Now become our favourite Indian restaurant for Sunday Buffet. Not usually necessary to book as we usually get a table during the afternoon. All food freshly stocked up, excellent taste, not too spicey but full of flavour, staff couldn't be more helpful and an excellent range of different tastes and dishes. Very reasonably priced and good choice of drinks. Absolutely worth finding it and eating there for the buffet on Sundays.

This restaurant serves some of the best Indian style food I have ever eaten, great service and a very nice restaurant. Highly recommend

I took my partner to the Raj for his 21st birthday for a quiet evening meal. On arrival we found it difficult to find due to it being in the middle of a housing estate. There was no parking and we had to park around the corner so the car was out of sight and also a distance away. Once inside of the Raj we were greeted by presumably the owner/manager he seemed nice and gave us a table for two promptly ( we hadn’t booked). When sat down he unfolded our napkins and just dropped them on our laps... he loitered around us waiting for us to choose our drinks, a simple order of two pints of coke. When our popadoms came out there was still no sign of our drinks but I didn’t complain and just waited it out. After 10 minutes a waiter comes over with lemonades. When I said we did not order this he seemed confused and took it away. The manager came back over and asked us what we had ordered drinks wise again and I replied with two cokes. By the time the drinks actually made it to the table we had nearly finished our popadoms. Our cokes were flat and had no taste or flavour to them but I said that I would let it slide and not make a problem of it. Whilst reading through the menu I realised that we had come on a night which had a set deal for 10.95 per person this included a starter, main,nan bread and a side of vegetables. Once ordering our starters came out. I had the onion bajji’s normally my favourite part of an Indian! These were very oily and had no flavour to them whatsoever. My partners starter seemed lovely so again I let it go. After having our starters cleared we had a 25 minute wait for our mains. It all looked lovely on the table and the waiter seemed lovely and cheerful. Once we had started eating our mains I realised my chicken did not look all that great, so I put it on my side plate and cut it open and took a bite. I promptly had to spit it back out into my napkin ( very embarrassing) and cut into it further. I then see that it is grey and so dry it was like trying to eat a rubber. My partner also found this problem with his curry and was put off straight away. When the manager swooped around he asked how everything was and by this point I had enough and complained. He defensively asked me to cut another bit of chicken up for proof. I again showed him the piece of chicken and explained that I am not going to eat grey chicken. I had no apology and he walked off. 5 minutes later he comes back to the table and tells me how his chicken has to be probed and said it was cooked correctly. I said that I am aware it has been cooked at the right temperature but the chicken is off! He offered me a fresh curry to take away but I declined it. Apart from that we were offered no apologies and no other compromisation. I asked for the bill 3 times before it actually showed up to our table and we had to still pay 33.90 for our meal! 6.20 for two pints of flat gone off coke?! I paid promptly and left and do not wish to return. I understand we came on a busy night but if you cannot deal with the customers and provide a good service do not put on a deal which you cannot cater for!

It is in the centre of an enormous estate of 'executive' housing. But once inside it is modern 'Raj' and very comfortable. The service is friendly and discreet and the menu choice extensive. Toilets are clean and well kept. Well worth a repeat visit.

My favourite Indian restaurant in thetford, the food is always of high quality and nicely displayed when it comes to the table I’ve tried mostly all the dishes on the menu over time and can honestly say none of them disappoints. The waiters are very friendly and helpful. A must visit Indian restaurant in thetford.

The other reviews are correct in saying delivery is slow. I’d suggest ordering way in advance. We ended up having to cancel plans with friends because the order took 2.5 hours, even after staff told us originally it would be 1 hour 10 minutes. The food was fine and hot.

had 2 take aways from here now and both poor ,lastnight i had a jalfrezi which was tasteless,watery like a jar out of tescos .new saffron is much better quality & tasty and service is great!

Lovely setting and appears very spacious, food was really nice and well presented, will definitely go again. One small disappointment was that service was slow, in fairness there was a large table with about 12 guests before us so that may well have slowed things down, our food once it arrived was served all at the same time for our table of six, no one was left waiting

Had a delivery, was due at 8pm had to ring at 8.20, food didn’t arrive until 9pm and was stone cold .... awful...no apology given. Won’t be rushing back.

Stopped for an evening meal while passing through the area, a clean restaurant with nice decor , the staff were courteous and friendly. Starter of king prawn purée was delicious, followed by lamb Shirazi which was a dish I had never tried but again delicious, all in all a very good reasonably priced meal, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend

We meet here for a small work night out. It’s never they busy we always get a table without booking. Food is always nice with left overs available in a box for you

Went to this place with my wife, son and daughter - in - law. Never tried indian food on a large scale before but this was nice. Had a buffet meal which meant we could eat as much as we liked for a very reasonable price. Restaurant is nice and clean, the waiting staff are pleasant and polite. Worth a visit if you like indian food.

Always have a good meal here. Staff are polite and courteous. I don’t eat spicy food but the korma and tikka are lovely. It’s nice inside as well.

Had a lovely meal here on my hols with family. We had so much choice food wise and it all tasted lovely. Would highly recommend this restaurant, hope to go back in the future.

We were on holiday and saw a menu showing a set meal chosen from everything on the menu. It was really nice with the staff being very friendly as well. Lucky choice for us.

I've eaten at The Raj many times, usually on a banquet night (which is fabulous value) and I occasionally pick up a takeaway. A few times I've had to query the bill with a large party as it seems to be too much, but in the past have let it go. Tonight we had a table booked for 15 at 7pm. When we arrived they didn't seem to have a record of our booking and hastily put some tables together for us. Our number shrank and although we were waiting for 1 more we said we already had her order so could get on. After a 20 min wait for our poppadoms we asked again, to be told we hadn't ordered any, we had to ask repeatedly for menus, to order and then we had an hour and a half wait for our starters (from ordering, not from our arrival time). Another half an hour before our mains came out. One of our party spoke to a member of staff and they begrudgingly gave us a complimentary bottle of wine but at no time did we get any apology. When the bill was produced we asked whether they were prepared to make any reduction for our extensive delays, we were then faced with arguments and excuses, and still no apology at all. The food is always lovely, and good value. In the past I've found the service slow but friendly and attentive. Tonight it was abysmal. Really disappointing!!!

My partner and I went here on a night that they were doing a buffet which seemed like a good idea to start with. They charged £10 per head, but I don’t think it was worth the money paid.

Best Indian in Thetford without a doubt, dhansak is delicious, friends think the naga is the best for miles.

We love love love the raj! The boyfriend's birthday choice again and it was amazing! We had popadoms, starters and mains all round and it really was lovely! There were 4 of us and nobody was disappointed! Everything was great from the food to the service to complimentary after eights at the end of meal! The food was lovely, had a large array of different dishes between our party of 6 and we all really enjoyed them. However, the service is seriously lacking here. Unfortunately 4 of our friends cancelled last minute and the waiter made his anger very apparent when dragging away the additional table very noisily. They were off with us all night and we were trying to get the bill and extra drinks for a long time as everyone seemed to be ignoring us.

We only live down the road so it is nice to have such a delicious Indian close by. Brilliant and friendly staff and delicious food. We simply will not go to any other Indian restaurant.

For many years now Raj has been the outstanding place to enjoy an Indian but for the past 8 months it has steadily dropped in quality and tonight was an all time low.

We had a takeaway which was very tasty, and arrived piping hot even though we live about 6 miles. Will use again.

Had a nice takeaway when visiting family. Service was good-with food being ready when we went to pick it up.Enjoyed the biryani-lamb was nicer than the chicken only because as an Asian one prefers thigh meat as breast is a bit dry, the sag and lamb sagwala was also very nice.Cost foe 5 adults and a child was £40 due to loyalty discount card.

Ordered from here and I am disgusted with what I tasted. The chicken was extremely dry, the curry was flavourless and dry as well. Had chicken dhansak from a few different restaurants and this is by far the worst one I’ve ever eaten! Will not be coming back to this Indian. Only positive was the naan bread was fine. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone and I’ll be telling people not to order from here as there are better Indian takeaways in Thetford.

Called in off chance last night, owner remembered us asked where we had been, explained ill health, guided us to a table, from there on service was superb, food as usual was excellent, ordered to much, no problem with re packing to take home. Parties on either side of us were celebrating birthdays, soon got into conversations with them. Perfect evening, well done to all the staff.

This is a great option if you want to eat in and are staying at centre parcs. It's cheaper and nicer than the 'dining in' on site takeaway. You just have to go collect it from the security kiosk.

The first time on visiting, I found this place amazing. It has a lovely cosy intimate setting and you are made feel very welcomed. The food is excellent and a very good selection on the menu. I would highly recommend to everyone.

We attended the Sunday buffet this week at the Raj after a few good trips to this restaurant.After our poppadoms and starter we had to ask for new plates and our starters to be cleared. This was attended to reluctantly by a waiter with very limited english speaking skills. We then served our main and realised we needed new cutlery for our second course. The same waiter told us that was not an option and we had to use our dirty cutlery. We then decided to take some cutlery off one of the many empty tables as nobody else was in the restaurant. Around one minute later in the middle of our meal a very angry manager approached us and furiously told us that the fact we took cutlery off another table was completely wrong and disrespectful. The way he spoke to us was so unprofessional and aggressive i was completely put off my meal. I told him i would not be paying for the main but i would pay for what i had eaten. He then told us all to "get lost" and even when my associates tried to pay he was too aggressive to accept it.We have honestly never had service so atrocious and repugnant in all my life and will never return to this establishment.

I seriously cannot recommend this place enough the food is absolutely gorgeous with so much taste, the portion sizes are brilliant, the staff are always so polite and happy to help, the inside of the restaurant is beautiful itself and kept to a very clean manner. They also do the best buffet deal on a Sunday for a very reasonable price which again taste absolutely gorgeous I honestly don't know how this place hasn't got more recognition definitely one of the best in Norfolk and in fact the best in Thetford me and my family wouldn't dare ever go anywhere else now since trying here :-)

Ordered through the Just Eat App and delivery was 19 minutes earlier than predicted, which was fine. Food was plentiful and amazing. Would highly recommend and will be ordering from there again!

Was being treated by friends to a takeaway so we ordered politely not saying this wasn't a favourite choice of restaurant. I'm a good critic on Indian cuisine and this food is certainly not in par with our favourite Indian. On collection the staff,s mood seemed low and not friendly , what little conversation was made was forced and false. The meal was not good, no flavour or kick to it, totally lacking any immediate or lasting flavour. In my opinion you know when you've had a good Indian as you can taste the spices still after several hours. Sorry Raj... The New Saffron is always first choice with us. .. the high rating you have certainly doesn't match your food,Shame as your venue is quite nice inside.

Set into a row of shops, is the Raj. Met at the door,by friendly smart staff, shown to our table, clean white table cloths. A well decorated place, very clean as were the loos. Great pickle tray to start, fab curries, with choices of different rices and nan breads. Great food and great service, this was my first visit, but I will be back for more. Well done to all at Raj, this is a great standard to set, keep it up . Our party of four were all very pleased.

I wrote a review on the Raj 4 years ago and I have just returned this evening as I am living overseas. I am delighted to report that the food continues to be served at an extremely high standard and the service is amongst the best I have experienced. I went with my Family and I asked for a mild curry for my Dad which they were pleased to prepare and was served to a high standard. My Dad really enjoyed it. Can't recommend this enough as a highly impressive all round Indian cuisine experience.
