I’d like to thank the lady working in the cafe tonight (18/4/24 at around 5:30/6) who offered to hold my dog so that I could order and pay for food as I was in my own. You wouldn’t know by looking at or talking to me, but I’m autistic. The wind had given me sensory overload and I have been in burnout, so I took my dog for a little stroll around the garden Center and saw that I was allowed to eat there with the dog in the outside covered area but not in the restaurant. I had missed the open time for getting food in the farm shop. I hadn’t eaten a meal in nearly a week as I struggle to feed myself when I’m in burnout. It would have been easy for her to acknowledge me looking at the dog sign and leave me to walk away, but she came over and offered to hold my dog for me so that I could get food. This meant the first real meal I had eaten this week and will hopefully give me the energy to get some food tomorrow too. To some this may be a seemly small favour, but to me actually it was quite huge and will have a knock on impact to my week. I am very grateful that she saw me and offered to help. It’s above and beyond customer service and she really won’t have known how important that was for me. I hope she gets this message. Thank you to you, and I feel bad I didn’t catch her name or see her after I finished my meal. The food was lovely too

Decided on a day out to reciver from the festivities of Christmas so visited the garden centre and the lovely Topiary Restaurant. A huge area but it wasn't very busy so service was quick. We had a range of items including Soup, fish Finger sandwiches, children's plate - all well prepared and value for money. Certainly on our list for a return when we are next in Edinburgh.

Excellent fish and chips served here; definitely one of the best in the region. Very fresh, very crisp battered fish, excellent chips and very tasty mashed peas. Tartare sauce, crispy bits and bread and butter also part of the dish. This is very good indeed. Other lunch items are also very good and well worth trying.

Stopped in late afternoon on a Saturday and happy to see the place open, quiet and plenty of seats available with someone clearing and wiping tables too. Floor was quite messy with crushed in crisps etc but assuming this is hoovered at the end of shift and was due to be done. Just had a trifle, caramel shortcake and two coffees between us. The sweet treats were delicious and the coffee very good! Flavours available on display so I didn’t have to ask which flavours they could do for my latte. We paid and were given our stuff at the counter then we went to sit down. The man said goodbye to us on our departure. Would definitely return and maybe try a main meal. Free parking is a bonus too.

There was a time when going to a garden centre and having a coffee was a favourite way to spend a morning or afternoon. Sadly no longer the case - and that is not only at Mortonhall! I was meeting someone I had not seen since before lockdown - more than half our time was spent with me queuing and no sign that the staff were in any hurry! The current restaurant is bigger and more sophisticated than the old but is dark and miserable on a pleasant day and most of it has no view of the outside, let alone the garden centre. The coffee was passable, but eatables limited to the usual fatty and sugary cakes and scones. We had little or no time left to view of even think of buying anything. The craft materials I had told my friend about have gone to be replaced by furniture and frankly the whole inside of the shop would have little now to interest gardeners.,

What a shame, such a lovely location but food is well below average and overpriced. Sandwich = cheap bread, tasteless spreads (not fresh) they call hummus and avocado, and then they charge you 8 pounds. Weak coffee and mediocre scone. Go for the plants, nothing else.

Since last review, and after a couple of recent visits, I'd say this place has definitely improved food quality. A simple thing like replacing inappropriate brioche buns for things like a bacon roll etc, with a morning roll is a sign of commonsense. And attempts at varying items available at breakfast are to be applauded. Good stuff.

We both have visited the garden centre on numerous occasions and whilst not the cheapest, has a good range of plants. But today we were passing and decided to call in for a coffee and a cake. We were shown to a table (strange for a cafe environment) and told to scan the Q code to order. We said we just wanted a coffee and a cake each of the paper menu also given to us. The “usher” couldn’t take this simple order as it had to be an order taker, which he said would send down. After a twenty min wait, we asked a waitress cleaning a table near by if we could order. Only to be told she doesnt take orders and will get some one else!! Eventually a order taker person took our order. After another fifteen mins an “ adviser” said they didn’t have walnut cake and could I pick something else! As I was looking at the cakes on offer menu the coffee and tea along with my wifes scone was delivered. I said whoa I haven’t even picked what I want yet. Then at that point another server dropped off my Walnut cake lol! I said I thought you had non? She replied we found one on the bakery shelf. What a total disjointed chaotic place for a quick coffee break. While we were there we saw others going to the till area to get their money back - as you have to pay up front! They really need to look at the model of good service by Dobbies. You collect your food then coffee then pay for it, finding your table at that point. If they don’t have your chosen food item, they then give you a vibrator alarm gizmo that lights up when its ready to uplift. Half the staff and works seamlessly. Klondyke you need to sort out this shambles of a restaurant experience quickly or you will lose clients fast.

We queued for 25 mins for a coffee and a cake and the system was really bizarre and unclear. Do you help yourself to cakes or not (it seems in some cases you do but the plates were way up by the tills so we had to go and fetch a couple and bring them back to choose a cake). No apology for the wait when we finally got to the till but a chap who was barking orders re the coffee/milk etc at a female colleague. The crockery and cutlery was grubby. Our table hadn’t been cleared or wiped and the tea wasn’t hot enough. The cakes were OK. We would have liked another coffee each but weren’t prepared to queue again. I suspect they are short staffed but think they could really improve their service just with a few small changes to their self service/till process, an apology and maybe a smile or two so that customers might actually feel welcome rather than an inconvenience. It could be a great cafe.

Visited to see the Christmas village and singing reindeer which were great. Stood for ages in the queue for food waiting to be served. Ordered tea and juice which you get when ordered. Then sat for ages waiting for food so tea was cold by the time food came. Child’s fish and chips was awful, fish was rubbery and batter hard, chips greasy so she wouldn’t eat it. Very disappointed and overpriced for what we got. Definitely wouldn’t rush back.

Was very disappointed in both the food, prices and cleanliness of it. Not been for a few years and sad to say its went downhill. Queue right back through to the shop when there seemed not to be enough staff. We got sandwiches which were dry and the coleslaw on the side looked like it had sat out all day waiting on us. We had to clear our own table as seemed staff were too busy with all the tables. Not enough staff for the size of place and when we asked lady whom I presumed was management foe cutlery as there was none she thumped it down like it was an effort.

There was a time, not that long ago, when this place was excellent. The food was very good indeed. The queuing , ordering system has always been ‘quirky’ with someone dealing with hot drinks and someone at the till taking food orders. Can cause confusion. Recently though, something has gone wrong with the food quality. It is not bad by any means just not as good as it was. Bacon or sausages on a baguette in morning was odd but the baguettes have now been replaced by sweet brioche buns! Sweet with bacon or sausages is just wrong. What is wrong with a plain morning roll. The children’s lunch options are poor. The wraps and fillings are not great and giving the green apple and banana in the ‘deal’ is healthy in a way but a bit ‘austere’ somehow. The tea and coffee is very good and the staff have always been excellent - through some difficult times in the last couple of years. Hard to put finger on the problem exactly, but something is not working quite right at the moment re food quality or presentation. Overall, it is still a good place for a decent coffee in quiet, peaceful surroundings. I hope it finds it’s mojo -as they say - soon.

20 minute stand in a small queue. No emphasis by staff or any appearance of a manager controlling. One staff member standing cutting small corners of very small bags pouring in to a jar whilst a single person slowly served. Two staff bring out hot food but as orders not going in fast enough they looked bored. No buzz about staff. Can't say if friendly or not. Food fresh and plates hot it is front of house that's the issue.

Visited here today with my daughter and I had the Sunday Roast (Gammon Ham) which was one of the best Sunday lunches I have had in a very long time. All credit to the chef. Two large slices of gammon with large Yorkshire Pudding, parsnips, carrots, stuffing, roast and boiled potatoes with gavy on the side. I couldn't finish it all but got to wrap the gammon and take it home with me. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, Jackie and the other 2 female staff were so kind and helpful. After a walk round the garden centre and shop it was back for coffee and a cherry scone then on to the farm shop for fruit and veg where again the young guy serving was really nice and friendly. I have been before a few times and will be back again soon. Thank you.

Presently, it's barely worth one star. We (4 of us)were so disappointed with it - we had gone with reasonable hopes of a decent lunch, but it was not good. The waiters were patently not trained at all in table service ( in better times it's a buffet canteen style). They were too few for table service. They had difficulty taking orders as there was only one IPad for ordering. I think the kitchen had problems with table service and cooking to order. The meat in the two steak pies was almost inedible, the burger was overcooked and hard (!). The fish and chips, poor. The fish was soaked in grease, chips were cool, the mushy peas tasteless. We ordered desserts, 3 out of 4 came. 2 out of the 3 had ingredients missing. On a more positive note, COVID measures were very evident, and the bill was reduced for the missing items. I think this is a failure of management, rather than frontline staff.

I come here regularly whilst walking the dog so we have to sit outside as no dogs allowed in, which is fine but means I’ll probably only visit in spring and summer. The cafe has been greatly improved in appearance and the coffee is nice and so is the food albeit ridiculously expensive for the latter (more later!)The main issue is that, although they have coffee making machines on both sides of the aisle the one on the right is NEVER open and only one barista can operate the one on the left so the service is absolutely bottlenecked as they also only have one till open! If there’s more than 10 people in the queue I usually leave without having a coffee! The food is of a good quality but as another reviewer pointed out it’s not covered and I’ve seen a few flies hovering over various items!!My main quibble with the food is the price. I bought a SLICE of sausage roll on my last visit and the price wasn’t marked on the notice so I was gobsmacked to find out it was £3:95!!! The cakes and tray bakes are similarly priced, which is frankly a rip off. I’ve included a photo of the sausage roll, which was ok but not 4 quid’s worth of OK!There are better priced cafes reasonably close that are also dog friendly so this cafe is only an occasional stop.

This is a difficult one to review as there has already been plenty of regulars review. To me I think the name on tripadvisor might worth a revisit as this coffee shop also includes the garden centre. Most of the time everyone searched for the garden centre name instead of the coffee shop name. Again, this is a difficult decision for the management to do unless maybe they make a new tripadvisor page for “Mortonhall Garden Centre”? Then as time goes by, slowly merge both names and review together? Just a thought. The food selection is great, I hope you get more customer and can expand even more. The other local garden centre competitor recently around 2018 did a refurb and went from 5star to 1 or zero star after (still ignorantly) messed up the restaurant as of 2019 and no longer specialising in plants but just some plants. This cafe serves wonderful selection of drinks at very good prices. The hot chocolate is just the way how it should be served. The scottish breakfast is very well priced and very good. Very children friendly too. Service was lightning fast, staffs were as friendly as your best friends. What a plesant surprise and definately become my frequent visit. The garden centre offers a really-really good selection of plants, more of like a professional garden centre than a large chain brick and mortar shop which only offer standard moderate quality plants (yes I can tell). A very well look after place which feels like how a garden centre plus coffee place should be run.An extra plus for the farm shop! Wonderful selection of rare and tasty vegetables, good choice of locally produced specialty cheese. This little gem is highly under promoted but evenwithout thousand of reviews the carpark is always almost full (even on weekdays this includes the dreaded monday and tuesday). Customer speaks for itself. Wonderful job.

I went for lunch with my Mum and my 15 month old son today. The Centre and Cafe look great and very clean and organised. The Cafe staff were all very friendly and helpful (apart from one). I ordered an Arran Cheese and Tomato chutney toastie and ordered a Spotty dog for my son from the Kids menu and my Mum had a vanilla slice. My toastie was full of very oily cheese and then I had a tiny pot of tomato chutney on the side I had to put in the toastie myself and spread thin. My sons meal made no sense at all as a Meal for children. It was a frankfurter in a small hot dog roll, a metal beaker of sweet potato fries covered in salt, a small crockery pot of baked beans and a side salad (with leaves and raw red onion) covered in salad dressing. All served on a wooden chopping board. None of it was practical or healthy for children and I was disappointed. He ate the beans and a few chips but I was very conscious of how much salt they had on. My Mum said the Waitrose vanilla slices are much better! The prices have definitely gone up in the cafe but the food does not match the prices.

We both had sandwiches - smoked salmon and cream cheese, and ham. Tea and coffee. Thoroughly enjoyed them. Cheese scones delicious. The restaurant staff were all very friendly and helpful. Been twice since it reopened, and will be a regular diner.

Roomy cafe with pleasant ambiance and delicious scones. Can't risk ordering cappuccino on Sundays as the staff have difficulty in getting a good result. More like a latte. Please insist on staff training in process of obtaining a new authentic cappuccino.

Si pudiera dar no había estrellas. Cafetería sin duda le permite bajar el centro de jardín enormemente.
