Not good poor staff let’s it down Looking at other reviews we obviously got it wrong a bad day. But we got surely staff and attitude. We only came in for drinks hardly anyone about but all it takes is a smile guys No manager to be seen but guess early sorry but not good. I was recommended by a friend to come here but it let us down and didn’t deliver and I hope the people that run the business may need to work on staff training on how to greet a guest. I doubt I’ll return i’m Sure my review will be ignored as they will go on their great reputation. I wish them all the luck for the future. venue and location top marks. Just staff need to be addressed. I’m sorry but not great not even good.

This is our third visit to the Black Lion for breakfast, and it never disappoints! The ingredients for breakfast are super quality and local. The new additions to the breakfast menu are a great idea, although you can't beat the full English

The Black Lion never disappoints. We've eaten here recently for dinner and last weekend for Sunday lunch and both times were excellent. There's an interesting menu with small sharing plates which are delicious together with traditional favourites and specials ... something for everyone and you can have a sharing plate (or 2!) as a starter. Staff are great and work really hard. Its a popular place so you will need to book if you can. They also do daily breakfasts which we've yet to try but have heard that they're amazing too. What a success story.

Good pint of beer and impressive range of local tasty gin. Our food was good and nicely presented. This establishment is well run all area’s being very clean and tidy. Would certainly return when in the area.

I went here for a works staff dinner on Friday evening. I've not been in here for many years since the running of the pub had changed hands. The food was very good and the service was alright. Can't really compare it to my previous visits as it wouldn't be fair as it was prior to 2019 that I think I last stepped through the doors! Based on the food I was served, I would recommend "foodies" giving it a visit.

Very good roast Sunday lunch with gluten free options. Staff friendly and helpful. Would highly recommended this pub. Will be returning. They also have a fun quiz night every couple of weeks .

Lovely pub with friendly staff. We ordered the Gammon with pineapple - while it was tasty, it was a bit on the salty side, the salmon was delicious, the scampi was crispy and the burgers were delicious but the halloumi was a bit over done. Overall we had good service and it was a pleasant atmosphere.

A place full of old world charm and character. Friendly staff and excellent food. We would definitely return here .

very good food, very good service and very clean. however , we were promised a bathroom with a bath but they had double booked it. the bathroom we had was very poor, the heater did not work at all and it was lees than the value expected by a long way

What a transformation. The Black Lion is back to its old self. Good food, relaxed atmosphere and a lively bar. What’s not to like!

Happened upon this gem of a place. Lovely coffee and curry for lunch. Relaxed vibe. Good wine selection, definitely will return when we are back in Norfolk.

Food was below average and a bit weird. The devilled whitebait was lacking any sort of crisp coating or devilment. it was just soggy small fish. Maybe the devil is not allowed in Walsingham? The main was one of those courses you see on Masterchef where John Torode says "I'm not sure about that combination". Well I'm not sure about a chicken schnitzel with a fried egg on top and, what I think was, a cranberry sauce. Chicken schnitzel with fried egg? - fine. Chicken schnitzel with cranberry suace? - passable. But schnitzel, egg AND cranbery sauce? - no no no no no no. Who has a fried egg with cranberry sauce? Anyway, the beer was good and the waitress was very nice. However the chef needs a bit more practice, although the more common items like burgers looked pretty good as they went past my table, while I was herding cranberries to the side of my plate.

Stayed for 3 nights early September 2023. Food very good and breakfast was exceptional, cooked fresh to order and a lot of it also as much tea or coffee as needed. Would return for another visit. They are certainly trying very hard to build a good reputation which they will achieve.

A short walk from our accommodation the Black Lion is a very welcoming and friendly pub, menu is quite small but there is also specials boards. Restaurant is spotlessly clean and well laid out with lovely decor, service is quick and efficient and food is well presented and tasty.

Having been regular visitors to Walsingham for 40 years we have seen many pubs in the area change hands and reinvent themselves and knowing how fabulous the Carpenters Arms is, had high expectations for a similar experience. What a shame that our first meal back at the Black Lion for some time was so underwhelming and nothing like its successful sibling. Food was basic, simply constructed and left us wanting to settle up and move on after our main course. Will stay close to future reviews in case this was down to teething troubles post-launch but will revert to the Carpenters Arms for the foreseeable.

I was visiting Walsingham with a friend. We had a very pleasant meal here, and a few beers. Reasonable price too. Well worth a visit.

Visited under previous owners and was ok. Newly refurbished - great staff, good menu, great value. Really recommended. There’s a host of other good places nearby so they have to work hard to impress. They’ve hit the mark.

Family outing to Walsingham and stumbled upon this little gem. Recently reopened under new management we were told. A vibrant buzzy atmosphere, great service, great food and helpful friendly staff. We couldn't have been looked after any better. We shall be returning and staying next time as the bedrooms look delightful.

So lovely to see the Lion reopened very recently as it’s a great atmospheric Pub . Visited last week during the New Dawn and it was very busy, but got a late table and had the Burger and the Chicken Leg, both excellent. Nice wine list and my husband said the beer was good too. Lots of locals and pilgrims in the bar and outside. Will definitely be back soon.

The Black Lion has been through a few ups and downs over the past year but is now definitely on the up. Having been taken over by the same people who run the excellent Carpenters Arms in Wighton, the Black Lion reopened a couple of weeks ago and now seems to have overcome the usual opening jitters and is really getting into its stride. My wife and I ate there this evening and can firmly recommend the cheese souffle, the burgers, the Mrs Temple's cheese board, and the white chocolate pudding. The staff all seem lovely and extremely welcoming. We will certainly be back!

First visit to the Black Lion. Absolutely delicious food - didn’t want it to stop! We were welcomed as soon as we walked in with friendly smile and shown to a table. Booked a one night stay here on a short break to Norfolk- pity should have stayed longer! Situated in the village just a few steps from the Ruins! Quirky room with an additional bed! Staff friendly and helpful. Food delicious. Only downside was parking diffito find close by.

Seasonal specials alongside a good standard menu make choosing dishes during a short stay very difficult. I chose the specials each evening and was very impressed with the steak and kidney pie and the pan fried pheasant. Staff are friendly and very helpful on the menu and with any dietary questions.

When we were shown into our room and there was a bed, water bowl and biscuits for our dog I knew we’d like it here. We stayed 5 nights and our dog was with us throughout, breakfast and dinner included. We found The Black Lion had a lovely feel about it and it was very relaxing. They serve an amazing Pimms with lots of frozen berries. The staff are all fantastic.I understand that the hotel is due a refurbishment, it does need a bit of TLC, it’s looking a bit tired.The menu is very limited at the moment so we only ate in on one night and had a cheese board another, there are only about 3 starters and 3 mains plus a special or two. We enjoyed the meal that we did have.If you like to go away with your dog I would highly recommend.

Great wine list and really lovely dinner. We loved the kedgeree especially. The service was very friendly also. This morning we searched the area high and low for breakfast and could not find anywhere. We came back to the pub and it had gone 11. Claire was super kind and had the kitchen make us some eggs on toast. We were so thankful.

We dined at the Black Lion this evening and felt totally ripped off. The menu choices were very limited. We were a party of four ordered two pies and two seabass. The pies were overcooked as was the sea bass which was overpowered by the ratatouille. The sauvignon blanc cost £9.10 for a large glass, of mediocre quality and overpriced. To add insult to injury there is a 10% service charge. The only positive was the service which was excellent. Overall poor and overpriced food and drink.

Although the choice was limited the food was good. Cromer crab delicious as was the caprese. Tempura prawns also nice but only 4 prawns for £9. Sea bass was also delicious. Good atmosphere and friendly helpful service.

Had to ask shall we sign in our details. Seated in a very dark corner. Very limited menu. Is was a Sunday and told menu on table mat. One of us had roast beef and one had roast chicken. The roast chicken was a joint which was very hard. The vegetables tasted reheated the broccoli not cooked through chard was stringy. Should have sent it back but don't like to bring attention to ourselves and regret it now. Was like a bad school dinner. Plus didn't have any bitter only laguer in an English village pub ? Was a recommendation from the B/B we were staying in and they are taking it off their list.

The first thing you notice when you arrive at the Black Lion is the rows of empty wooden plant pots that are supposed to guide your way into the front door; trouble is they don't work at as they just squeeze anyone entering or leaving the place together so you can't social distance and you have no choice but to physically touch any other people that are leaving the same time you are entering. The lack of COVID protection continues with hand dryers instead of hand towels in the old and dirty toilets. The condiments are passed from table to table and the bill is delivered in a wallet that other people have touched. The food (veggie burger) was very poor and had to wait 35 min for it to arrive. When we went to pay the bill we immediately noticed that the 'Rishi deal' hadn't been subtracted. We asked why and were told that they dont't particiapate in the scheme!

We had lunch here a week ago and really enjoyed it: I had the Cromer crab, which was outstanding. Service was friendly and it was good value for money. Highly recommended.

On making my 6.15 pm reservation I was informed that the Sunday Roast was stopping at 2.30pm but there would be plenty of other choices - I was perfectly happy with this. However when we arrived we were presented with a very limited menu, roast beef, roast chicken or nut roast - there were no other main course options. The roast meals were basically identical apart from the meat - both had the same gravy and veg that had been reheated - flaccid Yorkshire puddings, non crispy roast potatoes generic gravy - unfortunately this was probably the most disappointing roast I have had in a very long time.

We enjoyed the food here. Limited menu but well cooked and presented. Covid measures were good- tables well spaced and contact details taken. Good atmosphere.

What a great find! The Black Lion restaurant has friendly staff, great food and comfortable, spacious dining - we will definitely be back! Refreshing to find a choice of vegetarian options and non alcoholic lager.

My daughter treated me to a lovely weekend away at the Black Lion Hotel. The thing you notice here is the friendliness of the staff. Nothing was too much trouble and we were very well looked after for our two night stay. We stayed in a sweet twin bedded room at the front of the hotel.We had dinner in the restaurant on both evenings. The food was very good pub food. We particularly enjoyed the pies. Breakfast was good too, but it would be lovely if there could be an expansion of the continental breakfast options to include more fresh fruit, granola and some pastries. Thank you very much for the kind gift of chocolate truffles on our departure - a lovely touch. We will be back. We can’t understand the previous negative reviews.

On a whim decided to call in on the way back from the dreaded food shop, what a gem, friendly staff, made to feel very welcome, great menu, drinks appeared very quickly followed by a fab roast I had chicken, hubby had roast beef, all fresh and locally sourced, homemade Yorkshire’s and roasties, followed by Elton mess, lemon and lime posset, left feeling pleasantly full, cannot recommend enough, taking the family next time

We had a very enjoyable meal last night in atmospheric surroundings. The menu and food was great, the staff attentive and friendly. Thank you to them all.

We were in the area and ended up eating here two nights in a row. Great vegan choices and they even do a vegan breakfast. We will be back to stay in the B&B. The fire was roaring and the service was great. Over the two nights we had two high quality meals, I just wish we were here long enough to try everything on the menu.

We were recommended to go to this pub for a Sunday Lunch when we were in Walsingham. The hand pumped beers were excellent. The food service was pleasant and friendly. The food was amazingly poor. At 12:30 pm with lots of others also eating (obviously not late) the roast potatoes were only slightly roasted and were lukewarm as were the vegetables. The carrots tasted nice. The parsnips appeared to have been boiled or steamed not roasted. The beef one of us had seemed to be machine sliced and was lukewarm. Another of us had roast pork which was so tough as to cause difficulty eating it. The Yorkshire puddings were lovely - except again they were barely warm.

Sunday lunch in this pub hotel is a real treat so arrive hungry. Lovely mushroom risotto followed by tender roast beef, veg, York pud & separate cauliflower cheese. Highly recommend Saturday night trad jazz - very civilised.

Three of us had an evening meal, one gluten free, one flexitarian but trying to do more vegan, and one standard. Lots of choice from three menus (my vegan gnocchi was worthy of a place on the standard menu, not sure why it wasnt on there). Our two dogs were allowed in the inn with us. Friendly young staff, good service. Oh, and good range of real ales and soft drinks.

We ate here after finding a The Black Lion online by chance, was really happy to find they had a separate vegan menu as have struggled during the rest of our trip as most places have limited choice. The tomato and spinach gnocchi for main was very nice and thoroughly enjoyed the sticky toffee pear pudding. The pub had a great atmosphere - really cosy and friendly staff. We wish we had found this place earlier in our stay as we definitely would have come and enjoyed more meals here.

We booked for our works christmas meal. We had 3 courses for 23.95 each. We arrived early and there was no room to sit and enjoy a drink and so we were rushed through to the restaurant and as soon as we were seated the starters were brought in. Not enough cutlery on the table..4 people were missing any sort of knives. The main course was brought in.. one person was totally forgotten so we waited for their meal to arrive. The whole meal was plated including the gravy.. it would of been nice to have separate bowls of vegetables for people to choose themselves..for the price it should of been offered this way. And 2 gravy jugs were added on the table. The christmas dinner was good but not amazing..just a standard Turkey rolled and sliced and same with the stuffing.. the cranberry sauce offered was a jelly and was not very tasty..not a cranberry to be found. The desserts were good except for the Christmas pudding which looked cheap and not much taste. The brownie was good and the crumble too. We felt the meal was rushed and we were all done within an hour! No other bookings were after us so why we were rushed..I have no idea. We usually go every year but have to say it is doubtful if we will return next year. Shame as it is a lovely place but not so good this year. Turning the bar tables into restaurant tables has taken away the enjoyment of just having somewhere to sit for a drink.

Hidden gem. Dinner with friends and restaurant didn’t disappoint. Very good service, a great bar menu at reasonable prices plus friendly staff all contributed to a cosy night out. Would highly recommend.
