straits fish & chip shop in North Norfolk

This lovely fish and chip shop has been a favourite of ours for many years. Food is cooked to order and never fails to please

In fairness it was only a portion of chips. £3 seems expensive but it is probably the going rate now. The chips were poor, dry and bland. Lots of competition so they need to up their game. Other reviews seem good so I’ll put it down as a one off.

On 16th September at approximately 7.30pm Straits achieved fish and chips perfection. Simply the best I ever had. Everything cooked to order, piping hot , crispy light melt in the mouth batter, beautiful chips even the mushy peas were stand out . Still the best in Sheringham.

Fast service, cod cooked to order in about 8 minutes. Delicious chips, good size portion. Lovely mushy peas.

Very rude gentleman taking orders. £23.60 for two portions of cod n chips. Extremely small portion of cod for the price charged, and only a handful of chips. Definitely not worth the money. Go to the chip shop directly opposite, for a good value portion of fish n chips and avoid Straits.

Really really good chips. Good portion size but not silly large. Prices reasonable. Ketchup portions are 25p but are plenty for one person. Would definitely return. Did not try the fish.

Absolute rubbish fish n chips the chips were not cooked the batter on the fish was a soggy mess and was way overpriced avoid like the plague

Visited Sheringham for a holiday and decided to eat some chips from the local chippy however they have given me food poisoning!! Now suffering at home with food poisoning due to badly cooked chips! Very unimpressed with the quality of their food! Don’t recommend at all!

Came here on the first day of our holiday. Service was quick, friendly & efficient. Food tasted great, was cooked & seasoned perfectly. Fish tasted fresh & the batter not too greasy. Tried to order here on the last day of our holiday, but they'd sold out. Would highly recommend & will definitely have our fish & chips from here on our next visit to Sheringham.

Longest queue in town, biggest wait and even larger disappointment. Undercooked batter led to a short nights sleep.

Had a meal for two with sauces and drinks and was pleased with how reasonably priced the cost of the meal was had two fish cakes and chips and two batterd sausage and chips was lovely and was served very quickly and the staff we very friendly and polite will be coming back again for sure

Great chips decent portion sizes staff are very welcoming and friendly and take time to take an interest in your day and make u feel very welcome high recommend to all friends and family.

On day trip to sheringham. Not the best , asked for mushy peas and when got back to the car , no mushy peas , wouldn’t go there again , fish and chips and fish cake were not the best,fish looked like it had come out of a box, not fresh!

The fish was fresh and nicely cooked but the batter was unfortunately undercooked and soggy. Chips were OK but not plentiful. Service was slow wrapping the cooked food. Previous annual visits have been good so maybe this is a one off🤞🏼

Terrible, avoid, dirty oil means nasty batter and greasy chips, threw away most of it, should be shut down

We stopped by for fish, chips and curry sauce. All of it was fantastic and the best we’ve had in Sheringham. Yes we had to wait about 7 or 8 minutes while the fish was fried but it was beautifully crisp and piping hot. Friendly staff too. We were sad the see the next day that They’ve now closed for the season, and hope they’ll reopen next year.

We waited 35 minutes after they took our order - for 2 portions of chips. There were 4 people making abc serving so I’m not quite sure ehagg to the problem was. Chips were a bit flavourless. Disappointing

Probably the worst fish and ship shops I've ever been. It took them 30 mins to fry a sausage and chips, as only one out of four people working the is actually frying. Don't get me wrong, I still consider these places as fast food, so expect food to be done quicker. And after 30 mins I got a tiniest portion of chips with a sausage. And they didn't add salt as requested in my order. So bad.

The world's slowest place. Nothing else to say, terribly managed and a lack of common sense as well as lack of warning of how slow food would be

Went here on a busy Saturday night and everywhere was packed! They had a great queuing system (you go straight to the counter to order and get a ticket) and the order came in 10-15 mins. Had 2 cod & chips & mushy peas which were piping hot and excellently cooked. The batter was good and the fish was amazing! Would definitely recommend.

Very small portions and over priced. Chips tasted as though they had sat for a while. Staff were friendly but food was disappointing.

Took such a long time to get portion of chips. Poor service. Could do so much better with a bit more engery and enthusiasm. Sorry for poor review but a real let down

The staff didn't seem to understand when asked whether the chips were vegan or not (i.e. are they cooked in animal products). Eventually we got some chips, after a long wait, and they were flavourless, floury and just unpleasant.

First visit since Straits re-opened for the 2022 summer season. Fish was beautifully cooked and chips were tasty. Friendly and efficient service - lovely to be able to come back and enjoy proper fish and chips again. Ps curry sauce was also excellent

Expensive. Chips old brown stale. Cod thin and super greasy. So rubbish I thought I would post a review simply to warn others as you want nice fish and chips on holiday at the seaside.

Queued outside for 20mins for them to just shut the doors. Not even an apology. Absolute waste of time. At least 2 other fish and chip shops equally as nice. Don't waste your time.

After seeing some good reviews I tried for the first time Straits for some cod and chips. The cod was just about o.k. but nothing to write home about. The chips were exceeding disappointing, although they were freshly cooked half of them were just little...

Chips were ok. A bit brown. My main issue is the cod bites which contained the most miniscule amount of cod inside. I'm pretty sure one was just batter. The batter was nice fortunately. My wife ordered sausage and chips, the sausage was very small and beige plus it looked as though it had been given a vasectomy. Please note that one of these stars was for the attractive ginger lass who served us and not for the food. .

Had some lovely fish and chips here yesterday...always do when in the area! 10/10 for sure and good service. All I would say is that you should do Pies! as one of my daughters is not too keen on fish, but she did have it...

Oh my goodness, how disappointing! A very long wait... A chip shop with no pies, burgers, sausages. Very poor customer service. Young men, 3 of them, more interested in chatting, not working 😕 Doubt I will return.

Tiny portion sizes for the price, asked for salt and vinegar on the chips yet they seemed to have nothing on, and 20p per sachet of ketchup?!

The food is amazing, and all the fish is cooked fresh! Very friendly staff, and they cater to different markets since they fry in vegetable oil. I would highly recommend, as they are by far the best in the town

Probably the worst chips I've ever eaten, on unwrapping they looked like they were about 2 days old and hoped they tasted better than they looked. Were all dried up and hard but also managed to be a bit soggy. With the taste of cardboard. Won't be going there again.

Had fish n chips from here today - the chips were so hard they must have been reheated 2 or 3 times, The batter on the fish was dirty brown as recon cooking oil obviously passed its best. The lot went in the bin!! Will certainly Avoid this place in the future.

Had fish and chips here bank holiday week as a family of 6 they where lovely and freshly cooked we all enjoyed them. Was very impressed with all staff wearing masks as we only buy from fish shops that do.

The food was really good, but the staff members made me feel uncomfortable by staring at me creepily and that's quite enough to put me off going there again.

Expected it to be average, but i'm impressed, chips were really nice and crispy, not at all greasy. Cod again was not greasy, cripsy batter and a decent size. Keep it up.

Searched for Straits because it mentions Gluten Free fish and chips on their site. Only to be told they don’t do it anymore but I could have chips as they don’t cook fish in it. Update your site please.

When this shop is open the fish and chips are amazing! It takes a bit of a while to actually get it but it’s worth the wait.

We have had excellent fish and chips at this establishment in the past so we're bitterly disappointed with Our 2 Cod and 1 chips to share One of the fish was very small and was not good quality the chips were greasy and over cooked...

I was recommended Straits from a good friend as the best fish and chips in Norfolk and they weren't wrong, very tasty, chips cooked to perfection. Got to be popular when there were Ques out the door before they were even open!

This was a disappointing experience. 2 stars as they are the only chippy that accepted card payment. 2 cod and chips £16.00, the chips was greasy and had no salt or vinegar as requested and the cod had so much salt the batter was not edible.. The cod within the batter was the only nice part. No napkins either... disappointing...

ordered a burger didnt say if there was mayo in, got it and there was mayo, then asked if i could have a new one as i dont like mayo and they said no so i asked for a refund they said no so they...

Popular spot which tells it's own story. My recommendation are the chip butties/cobs/rolls with a twist. They are delicious and wide in variety. No seats though so you will be best hitting the seafront for a bit of seaside dining.

Just had cod and chips (hubby had batter sos and chips) and it was really delicious so good we nearly went back for more Chips were crispy and tasty the cod was in a lovely batter and perfectly cooked Thanks guys best fish and chips I have had for a long while

Join the queue for the best cooked fish in Sheringham. Gorgeous batter, lovely fish. Accompany them in its chips from the kebab shop opposite and you are in for a treat.

We stopped here, as we have done several times before and the food was brilliant. Not too expensive, short wait, good portion size and very enjoyable. Haven’t been there for a while, but it’s always been fab and will certainly be going again.

What can I say? Lovely traditional fish ‘n’ chips. Good sized portions. Stayed nice and hot for our ten minute walk back to our holiday cottage too.

Best fish n chips I’ve ever had. We took our cod and chips on to the beach and it was AMAZING. Not too greasy, not too fatty and no bad spots on the fish.

Only used this place once as it was so bad The chips were over cooked and extremly greasy. The fish wad also over cooked and greasy Very slow service and the staff wernt exactly customer friendly

Just had THE BEST fish and chips, cod bites and chips and a burger and chips order this evening. Great quality burger; chips were crispy and well cooked; and the batter on the fish was super crispy, I don’t think I’ve ever had better!

This is our regular stop for every visit to Sheringham. We walk down from the car park and pick up a meal before sitting by the sea to enjoy it.

Always use here when visiting. Tried several others and none compare. Batter on the fish is beautiful, but chips alone are so nice, just them with salt and vinegar and something to dip into, is fab!

Glad to have Straits open again after their winter break. The best chips and the best service in Sheringham; friendly, organised and professional.

We had chips and curry sauce on our long walk treat! The chips where done really nicely and the curry sauce was to die for just what we needed on our 10 mile round walk from Binham. I would recommend this place for sure, smaller than other chip shops but punches above its weight.

We visited this chip shop on a hot Easter weekend the shop wasn't overly busy but a little bit of a queue food was coming out quick and it all looks very good we both had fish and chips was not that expensive and tasted lovely

This is solely a take away fish & chip shop. The chips are the best, crisp outside, soft inside and no green or black ones. Recommend buying the chips and eating on the seafront. Wonderful

Chips were awful and a lot inedible. £4.50 for a burger which half filled the roll and only had lettuce and mayonnaise with it. No way like it used to be would not go again.

If you are in Sheringham then this is the chip shop to go to. Again fits the criteria of being popular with the locals and always a queue. A short walk from the seafront too. The cod has lovely crispy batter and the fish just melts in the mouth, heaven!

Glad this was open on a Sunday lunchtime. Quite a long queue but well worth the wait. Batter was light, chips perfect. And skinless fish! Fab.

Had this place recommended to me by a work colleague. We have been to Sheringham many times but, if I am honest, I had never before noticed this Fish and Chip shop, we tend to eat in restaurants or pubs. As we were here for the week and it was a lovely evening, we decided to get fish and chips to eat out, so this was the one we had to try. We were aware that the food is cooked to order (not a bad thing at all) and once it arrived we were very naughty and ate it on the bench outside Dave's fish and chip shop down the road (sorry Dave)! Lovely curry sauce. Will have pleasure in telling my work mate that it was a good recommendation.

What a cracking little chippy, nice staff, lovely food, really reasonable prices considering its q seaside chippy. Will definitely go again the next time we visit the Norfolk coast

The fish portion is very small for the price charged, and the wait is so long, you think the busy season they would have plenty of fish already done, you can't expect to wait long periods with a family, also the fish was so much bigger before

We went in just as it was about to close hoping to get home for the football. They not only served us but a good 10+ that came in after us. Very professional and friendly - impressed!. The fish and chips were delicious and I will be going there again.

Best chip shop in sheringham always a big queue so make sure you go early. Eat it on the beach fir the full experience

Very happy with our fish and chips served by friendly staff. Fish was fresh, fell apart as you ate it and great batter. Potatoes were sourced locally and really crispy whilst still being chunky. Our only quibble is the size of the mushy peas which were a little small. Also it wasn't cheap! Worth it though.
