Nice village cafe. Haven't tried the hotel part Dog friendly, clean, well appointed. Big menu, prices are a little high, but not extortionate. However did and drinks are very nice indeed. Worth a visit.

"Great location in Covent Garden. The place has a cosy feel at night, with exposed brick and dim lights. During the day I imagine it's quite a buzzy cafe. El servicio muy pobre, tuvimos que encontrar una camarera después de esperar más de 15 minutos para ser atendidos. Cuando llegamos estaban nuestros cafés exquisitos bocados en tazas pequeñas y menos de la mitad. La leche caliente que pedimos estaba apenas tibia y no era suficiente para los dos tazas que habíamos pedido. Por £2.50 una taza nos esperábamos algo mejor. No volveremos.

Visited for our anniversary. Haven't been dormant years and wish we'd not bothered this time either! Staff are all lovely and friendly and the wine menu is good and sadly that's where the positives end.Utilitarian decor. Cold, unwelcoming and personality less dining room. Bland table decor, food not great. When I eat out I want to eat something I couldn't do better at home. The Roade house menu sounds just OK; quality of food not great either and tasted 'off the shelf' and certainly not a thought out, well resourced menu.I had lamb tagine with about 4 pieces of lamb and about 2lb of cooked down onions with bread that would have killed a duck had I thrown It at it.Very, very disappointing. Won't ever bother again .

Our party of 3, my husband, mum in law and I decided that our Sunday lunch was going to be a little bit special as we had not been out for a couple of months. It was such a very good choice to go to the Roade restaurant on so many levels - easy booking (we phoned rather than by email), we were not rushed at all throughout the meal, it was easy access for mum and her walker and the food was rather lovely. The starters we ordered were baked sardines with anchovies for my husband and mum and I had charmoula prawns and mussels with cous cous and chilli sauce, absolutely mouth watering and we loved every bit. For Sunday lunch my husband had filet of pork wrapped in parma ham in a mushroom sauce, mum had filled hallibut with samphire and I had the Veal + vegetable medlay with roast potatoes and I will let everyone know that not one piece of dinner was left on the plate (not because we were still hungry but because we enjoyed it so much). Mum and my husband still had pudding (even though they were at the stage of deciding if there was enough room without undoing a button but they braved it. All in all a very lovely afternoon in great relaxed surroundings and very well priced. Would definatly recommend and would revisit, Thank you to all the staff.

We had a set menu of Salmon and spinach tartlet with poached egg, followed by loin of venison and followed up by a choice of puds including lemon posset, crumble or the magnificent chocolate Marquis. Everything in the meal was perfect with a slightly retro feel due to menu chosen by our hostess. The room was good with plenty of space for me and my wheelchair. The shower was a double size and did have a seat however the slight lip made it difficult for me as I can't step over it. I knew this when I booked the room having decided that I could last for one day without a shower!!!Breakfast was good, boiled eggs and soldiers for me and a very small scrambled egg on toast for my rather delicate feeling partner!!We would love to do it all again next weekend!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We've dined here half a dozen times during the eleven or twelve years that we've lived in Northamptonshire and we've never had anything that wasn't good. Everything is properly cooked, such as my blue fillet steak and my wife's medium rare fillet steak. They're using quality ingredients, the presentation is always nice but don't expect anything particularly dramatic.I'm glad they've replaced the darker and more old-fashioned wallpaper with a whiter and more contemporary look, because when you combined the old frumpy look with a wine list that is still largely famous French names and a cooking style which hasn't apparently yet embraced the high-tech kitchen gadgets and dramatic aspects of presentation that are becoming an increasingly common part of the fine-dining experience, you could be left with the feeling that this was a place that hadn't really moved with the times and was somewhat stuck in the past. The more contemporary feel to the décor has helped from that point of view.As far as I can tell this is a two-person operation, with the husband doing the cooking and the wife running front of house all by herself on the Thursday evening that we visited. Having said that there was only our table for three and one other table, so it's not the busiest of places. We did suffer a little from cold knees in here, even when sitting near the fire in the bar area, but it certainly wasn't as hypothermia-inducing as our experience with Behind The Bus Stop when they had just opened in the evening, for example.I was delighted to receive my blue fillet steak with blood coming out of it, which seems to be something that Sophia's Restaurant in Northampton are incapable of achieving, while other aspects of the cooking were good but not brilliant. My moules marinière was fairly pedestrian, the ones that I've had in France (even from street vendors) have emphasised onion / garlic / white wine far more and cream far less, also our daughter felt that the fig chutney overpowered the flavour of the game terrine, which she had expected to be a little more gamey. The salad of wild duck with poached quince and walnuts was superb. Our fillet steak appeared to have slippery buttered spinach under it, despite us not remembering that being mentioned on the menu, which made our steaks extremely mobile and likely to go flying off across the room when we tried to cut them! I generally tend to think of chicken as being a boring option for boring people, but the chef had displayed his saucing skills and managed to make the chicken interesting, although we again had mushrooms appearing on the plate that we don't remember being mentioned on the menu. As our daughter doesn't like mushrooms we ended up eating them for her.On the positive side, they didn't try to add a “discretionary” service charge to the bill. Their pricing seems to be different to other places around here, too. We weren't offered a set menu option, only à la carte, with starters from £5.75 for soup up to £7.50 maximum and main courses ranging from £16.75 up to £23.95 for the fillet steak. They don't try to charge you extra for vegetables in the way that Sophia's do. £2.50 for a glass of Coke isn't outrageous for a quality establishment such as this, so all reasonably standard so far, although some might balk at paying that much for the fillet steak. What was a little more surprising was the prices of the coffee after the meal. Cappuccino was a very reasonable £2.50, Tea Pigs chai tea was £2.40 and a liqueur coffee was £5.50, plus we also received three chocolates to share between three people as our petits fours. Their online menu shows desserts as being £6.50 but we were charged £5.50 for one and £6.95 for the other. Our total bill came to £150 but we splashed out on a bottle of Télégramme Châteauneuf-du-Pape, if we had stuck to house wine we would have paid £15 less overall.I definitely prefer the pricing strategy here to that of The Vine House in Paulerspury, where you have to have the set menu of three courses, £33 per head with 12.5% “discretionary service charge” added and a big argument if you don't want to pay it, then go away still feeling hungry because of small portion sizes. Having said that, the presentation and the flavour combinations can arguably be more exciting at The Vine House, assuming that you like something from the restricted menu choices of just three starters, three mains and three desserts. The Roade House could also possibly put a little more effort into making their desserts seem a little more exciting - maybe some spun sugar? If Sophia's can manage it then I'm sure that you could, too.Recommended; we would definitely return.

This is somewhere which has been featured in The Good Food Guide for 30 years, no mean achievement, so I chose to eat (and stay) here when I had to be in the area for work purposes. Unfortunately it didn't really live up to expectations. Whilst everything I ate was pleasant, nothing was especially memorable. Orders are taken in an adjoining and comfortable bar where a bowl of olives accompanies your aperitif and makes for a leisurely start to the meal. On a Tuesday evening the restaurant was far from busy and although diners were distributed around the large and silent room there were still a lot of empty tables. Those eating were divided between a number of lone diners, like me here for work purposes, and a couple of larger groups: I was treated to the conversations of a group of septuagenarian field 'sportsmen' bemoaning the decline in local shooting opportunities and another, equally mature, comparing their pensions. I would hope it is a bit livelier here at the weekends. Despite some criticisms elsewhere on this site of disengaged service, the young waitress who looked after me was pleasant and no more lacking in skills than is common in most rural locations. She appeared to be on her own in the dining room, though, which did lead to rather longer gaps in service than is ideal. My first course, game pate, had good texture but was fridge cold which took away most of the taste and the accompanying fig chutney and toasted brioche were again subdued flavour-wise. For mains, a roast partridge was well cooked but lacking in the gamey tastes gained from sufficient hanging. It was nicely plated with a small tower of kale and chopped chestnuts but still resembled a typical Sunday lunch. The best course was the dessert, an apple and blackberry crumble tart with creme fraiche. Wines by the glass were of the cheap and cheerful variety. Overall, I enjoyed my meal but there was nothing on my plate better than I would eat at home most nights of the week. I would be happy to eat here again but I'm not sure that I would go far out of my way to do so.

What Northampton, England specialises in is things that are cheap. If you want 99p stores, charity shops, places like Caffé Morandi which do gorgeous cappuccinos for half the price that Starbucks or Costa charge, budget Indian/Bangladeshi restaurants such as Rahuls, or the three Wetherspoon pubs in Northampton town centre that will serve you a meal plus a drink for less than a fiver, then Northampton is a great place to go. However, sometimes we need somewhere to go when we want to spend a little more and have the best standard of cooking that we can find, and this is where the Roade House in Roade steps forward. If you are coming up the M1 from Milton Keynes and you arrive at Junction 15 you would go right to head into Northampton but if you were to turn left you would find yourself in the village of Roade very quickly, as it's only about 2 miles from the junction. Roade is less than 7 miles from Northampton town centre, so you could feasibly take a taxi here if you were in a Northampton hotel, and it's especially convenient if you happen to be staying at the Campanile Hotel in Grange Park, which is about 3 miles away from Roade. We have eaten here on three occasions and the food that we have had here has always been better than anything that we have eaten in Northampton town centre, our latest meal for two people cost just over £80 which included three courses each and a bottle of wine. This is confident cooking with robust flavours and interesting combinations of ingredients and we would definitely go back there again. Recommended.

We had a pleasant evening of decent food here, the menu was short but imaginative, the wine list well balanced although there's a definite lack of choice of waters. Our fish main courses were perfectly cooked and were very tasty, in fact all of the food we had was much better than average with what seemed to us, emphasis on quality and flavour. If you start with great ingredients, you get better end results and the Roade House chef knows what to buy and what to reject.I think the front of house staff could be a little more engaging and involved with the customers which would help with what seemed to us, to be a rather less than average atmosphere. We were there for about 4 hours and in all of that time, not once were we asked if we'd enjoyed our meal or if the food was OK. When we left, the owners were engrossed in the till behind the bar and didn't thank us for coming, ask what we thought or indeed, even wish us a good night! Despite being a little underwhelmed with the quality of service, we will almost certainly go back as the quality of the food was really very good indeed.

Having dined in this restaurant for almost two decades, standards and quality have never failed to impress. The owners, Sue and Chris ensure great hospitality with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Log fires in the winter give it that added charm in this rural Northamptonshire Village.Having held small conferences and even parties of 30+ they have always been able to uphold their high standards. Quite a small, but intimate restaurant with a well balanced seasonal menu. They also have 'special evenings' which are well supported and excellent value.

We patronise this restaurant several times across a 12 month period. It is always consistently good. The pre dinner drinks we took with friends we consumed outside as it was a lovely evening. It would have been nice to think however that the young weekend staff monitored their guests for refills and offering canapes. The dinner menu was well balanced across fish/meat/vege. The wine list is always something to savour and in that regard the staff can be a little challenging if you havent made a quick decision. We chose well nonetheless.Moving inside we were tucked away in a corner as requested and stayed there for the duration. All dishes across the party were delicious. One of the guests had the steak who stated it was the best cut he could ever remember consuming! There were a few major downsides;one is a regular occurence but isnt big enough to prevent one returning:The village staff who wait on the guests need to add a modicum of finese to the already elegant dining standards. They speak to you in an unrefined manner;didnt let us taste the wine-just poured without question;man handled the bread rolls instead of using serving tongues;heads down and ignoring diners needs if wanted; "all finished" and leaning over you to collect dinner plates behaviour. It could all be so much better in the way customers are handled. The other downside of our recent visit is portion control. Given the pricing structure of the menu, it would be nice to have more lovely fresh vegetables adorning the plates rather than miniscule amounts. Try putting them in serving dishes and leaving veg on the table for once;that would be a major improvement. Some of our diners had cheese. Well what a laugh. At £8 a pop, they received 4 slithers of French cheese which the young waitress couldnt pronounce or read off her notes;they were coupled with the most enormous circular variety of 8 crackers/biscuits(no butter offered) which all looked farcical and rather pathetic for the kitchen to send out really. You come away however at the end thinking "well the meal is good; the location great and it still has to be one of Northamptons best fin(er) dining restuarants" But it could so easily be the best if a little more touches to front of house was considered and implemented.I suspect the management are content with repeat/regulars that compensates for these points.

We live in Northamptonshire and we are always on the hunt for a good quality restaurant. We read about the Roade House in the Good Food guide and thought we would give it a try. We were given a warm welcome and sat down for a drink in the bar where we read the menus before we were taken to the dining room. There were three young waiting staff milling around which was a bit off putting, when my husband asked what lager they had they couldn't answer the question - the owner chose to reprimand them a little in front of us and the other guests which I thought was a little off. They obviously did need to read the bar list again but we perhaps didn't need to be present to hear this. Our starters were really well put together and very tasty. I had a pear and gorgonzola salad and my husband had the lamb pastille - both were perfect. The mains didn't hit the spot quite so much, my fish was well cooked but the accompanying crab tortellini was rubbery and disappointing. My husband had the fillet steak which he quite enjoyed. I had the Santiago cake for pudding which I cannot recommend highly enough! The cheeseboard was also very interesting. The whole meal and a couple of glasses of wine came to just over £100 and so it was very reasonable. I think we would go back to give it another go.

We usually go to the Red Lion at East Haddon but decided to try elsewhere for a change for my wife's birthday this year. The Roade House Restaurant came out just ahead of the Red Lion in Northamptonshire on a couple of local restaurant review websites so we gave it a try and were not disappointed....quite the reverse. The welcome was warm and sincere and the whole ambience of the place was very pleasant. Locally brewed beer from the bar was excellent. We liked the feel, comfort and decor in the restaurant very much. You can't beat white tablecloths and spotlessly clean shiny glasses and cutlery. Menu was interesting and varied with something for most tastes. Wine list was comprehensive and sensibly priced. Food was superb and the dogs woofed down the doggy bags with great enthusiasm on returning home. We will be back soon for Sunday lunch.Thank you Sue for looking after us so well and please say hello to your two pet pigs for us. Another fellow crazy animal lover.

Welcome always good from management .Always like the olives whilst choosing from the dinner menu.Table service with young waitresses needs to be better given prices customers pay.The food always excellent quality though I have noticed a trend that main courses aren't served as hot as perhaps they should be such as having hot plates!A suggestion to management is to offer side dishes of additional vegetables/ variations. The lack of maturity of waitresses makes the service a little impersonal. They don't interact with diners and don't enquire if you need anything. The tendency is to deliver your dishes and scarper as quickly as possible .The wine list is excellent with a main focus on France. Could do with Californian quality reds though. Finally restaurant management need to invest in better quality glassware.Overall there's always a pleasant charm to the restaurant and modest sophistication particularly for Northampton area which lacks restaurants of this note.Friday evening diner.

We used the private dining room for a family celebration of my husband's 50th birthday on 4th January. The room was perfect in size for our group of 16 and we were given free rein to dress the table and room. From the first phone call, the service was relaxed and efficient and the attention on the day was the perfect balance of friendliness and professionalism. The food was amazing! The whole party commented on how delicious it all was. A really lovely birthday celebration. Thank you Sue and Chris.

My spouse and I have been going to this Hotel Restaurant for some years. I think it is about time that I give a review that reflects our attendance. The proprietors Sue and Chris are outstanding in the way they treat customers. Always attentive and very welcoming! Today is the Sunday before Christmas and we were entertained by the well know "Mike Kemp" Jazz trio. Their music is enchanting, escaping into a world of relaxation and dreams!. The food as usual was to a very high standard and It is very hard to see why this restaurant has only one rosette. I have visited other restaurants in other locations, some being three rosette and I cannot say in all honesty that their food was any better than the Roade House Restaurant. The cleanliness and comfort in the bar and restaurant are second to none. The menus are variable and usually reflect the seasons of the year. Food products are locally sourced and we understand the vegetable are grown by the owners.Today it was a set menu costing £31 per person for 3 courses. Excellent value for money!I would recommend this establishment to anyone!

I always take a look at other reviews to see how they compare with mine. But one has to say it as it is. This place tonight was average. Firstly no-one serving in the bar. The restaurant was reasonably filled for a monday night but the atmosphere was poor. Food was average. Nothing wrong with the chicken, but nothing much to shout about. Served by an absence of smiles. Food could have been a little hotter too and portions not large. Just an average meal that from the reviews should have been very much better.

Title says it all. I've been going to the Roade House since they first opened and before it was a hotel. We've always used it as a 'special occasion' place as it's not cheap, but it is very good indeed. The fact that, as I write, it's ranked at number 26 in the Northampton restaurants is more a reflection of the people who live in Northampton than the restaurant. It's been in the good food guide for 28 years and that says it all.Just one thing. I did stop going there for a time while my children were younger because they do not do 'chips with everything', or 'steak and chips'; but they do serve excellent, well proportioned, imaginative and tasty courses.Having just finished this review, I'll be going back there soon.

I have dined and lunched here before (and also provided very positive reviews) but this was the first experience in the private room/conservatory. It was a family celebration for 10 and was much enjoyed by all. The Roadehouse allowed us to decorate the room and table with flowers (although they would have done this for us if we preferred). The food was as always very enjoyable and satisfying- with a very good menu and wine list. The room/conservatory is excellent. Its light, spacious and airy, and nicely decorated - as others have said: classic but comfortable and relaxing. With a few sofas and chairs around the side there is plenty of room for people to move around and talk in between courses, (and/or to comfort babies who were getting weary of their buggies!).The service was very good and overall, everyone enjoyed an excellent, relaxed lunch in a very nice environment I thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for a private lunch/dinner

The food is always consistently excellent and rather a a shining star in the dismal array of Northamptonshire restaurants. Sometimes a little conservative and safe, but personally I prefer this than restaurants that attempt molecular gastronomy and fail dismally. There are usually some dishes that are outstanding and Chris, the chef, really does know what he is doing.Sue, the owner always pleasant, friendly and courteous, occasionally let down by a young and inexperienced waiter. Safe and considered wine list too always proves consistent and good.Hope it stays as it is for years to come!!!

I love it when hotels and restaurants make some where their own, without trying to be too corporate or 'by the book' I've experienced too much of this recently and I must say how refreshing it is to finally visit my local restaurant in my own village. The decor is classic and for some people it might not be as slick as your Zizzis and GBKs but this place is not trying to be a chain.I was so proud to take my work colleagues here as it was our quarterly dinner and this quarter was my turn to choose the restaurant. Albeit the chaps I work with never usually go to somewhere as nice as this but the waitress and the matradee made no fuss and we had a lovely time. The food is excellent with a short but varied and confident menu of homemade portions. The duck was especially good and I cannot fault the puddings.Well done, I'm looking forward to eating there again. Only one comment would be to have some more music in the dining room to liven the atmosphere a little

This was our second visit to the Roade House Restaurant. We belong to a Theatre Club and two of the committee found Roade House when searching where to eat before going to the theatre in Milton Keynes. I don't know how long it took them to find this restaurant but, believe me, their time was well worth it. We had a set meal. There were loads of excellent starters from which to choose. As a main course my wife and I had guinea fowl, cooked to perfection, really soft and moist. Others told me that their ox cheeks were the best they had ever tasted. As with the starters, there were plenty of desserts to deliberate over. Try the home-made ice-creams. They are excellent. The wine list was interesting, the coffee hot and strong, and the service absolutely superb. Also, I must not forget to mention that the Roade House Restaurant is extremy good value. I am sure we'll be back.

This restaurant has so much potential as there is not much in our area in the way of good restaurants. This one has a lovely building and the potential for a very nice atmosphere but it is rather old fashioned and stuffy. The owner is very friendly and the VERY young staff are friendly but SO young. The food is good. We are in our 40's but felt about 16 in comparison to the rest of the clientele. Please, Roadhouse, encourage some younger people in. The whole experience needs to be a little more relaxed. I'd love to go there regularly.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We have been dining at the Roade House since its beginnings as a very small restaurant. In the 80s and 90s we used it regularly as a place for celebrations and taking guests and work colleagues but, without consciously thinking about it, visits became rarer and this most recent one was the first for at least a couple of years. A group of us from around the country and the USA met in a kind of reunion, the Roade House was suggested and I fell in readily enough with it. The result was a very satisfactory lunch which indicated meals continue to be produced with a good deal of skill and some imagination. We ate from the set lunch menu which though limited to four or so alternatives a course provided a decent range of food in manageable portions. Over the years the cooking style has evolved with changing fashions and my roast cod on a bed of pureed peas exemplified that; it was slightly more gutsy and rustic than the food I remember in the past. In that it reflects the pattern across pubs and restaurants with reasonable aspirations but not the intention of creating starred fine dining. None the worse for that in my view; I have long lost the urge to eat over-refined and over-expensive food. So from a culinary perspective I came away from the meal feeling satisfied and although it isn't cheap I thought the prices were a reasonable reflection of the experience.Perhaps one of the reasons the Roade House became an irregular destination despite being our local restaurant is that it has always been a little short on atmosphere. Often bustle and activity contribute to the ambience of restaurants and the Roade House has never had it. This lunch was an extremely quiet affair in a virtually deserted restaurant but I doubt if the quite small dining room with its understated ambience ever really 'bustles'. Service was amiable; they have tended to employ local staff and service was always inclined to be willing but hesitant. There were signs it is still the same but that isn't entirely out of keeping with the low-key setting. How far it handles a full room in the evening as opposed to a sparcely populated lunchtime is an interesting question. We didn't have any alcohol so can't comment on the wine list. In the past it was unexceptional but with a number of affordable options and a reasonable geographical coverage.Overall we left feeling satisfied with the food and the overall experience and certainly my wife and I [the only locals in the group] thought we would use it more frequently than has recently been the case. As always with recommendations I would stress you need to be clear about expectations. This is a good restaurant producing proper food and certainly superior to most of its geographical competitors but it isn't turning out clever fine dining options nor are the additional features such as the service and wine list intended to generate a level of exclusivity. If anything that makes it a more comfortable place to visit.

I was with my mother in law on her 89th birthday. My wife and travelled from Hurley for the occasion. I looked at the Good Food Guide for suggestions and soon came to the conclusion that Northamptonshire is a dessert when it comes to restaurants.I was expecting the worst and on arrival I was reminded of an old age home as most of the guests were in the same age band as my mohter in law.The restaurant is run by the owners, the chef having been there for the last 28 years. We had a drink in the bar, order taken promptly and then off to the restaurant where a few tables were occupied. Then the suprise - the starters were as good as i have had anywhere. I ate linguine with prawn, and wife had goats cheese tartlet. My main course was breast and confit of duck - amazing. Mum in law had pork, and wife had thelamb. They were all outstanding. I tried them all. We passed on puddings as the portions were more than ample. The bill was about £30 per head including wine and service. It may not be the trendiest place to eat but if you like good food and service, it is worth going out of your way. I shall definitely return, if for no other reason to feel young again.

The kitchen at Roade House does prepare some good food that would become any local restaurant or food oriented pub. The two main problems are that i) despite the web site stating that they offer honest food representing value for money, we found they aimed for fine dining that was slightly overpriced and ii) restaurant staff was not quite up to the mark, with the exception of the lady in charge. For starter we had shrimps/oriental soup, where I found the shrimps among the best I've ever had, fresh and firm while still being fully cooked (at times you get shrimps where firmness has been ensured by serving them on the raw side). For main course we both had the pork belly with cracklings, mashed potatoes and veg. The mashed potatoes again is up there with the very best - really rich potato taste and wonderful texture. The rest was just standard, though. However, the whole setup (drinks in the lounge, double table cloths, the extensive wine list combined with the fact that our waitress had no knowledge of the bitters available, something I believe goes better with pork belly and mash than wine, and to an extent the price range) reaches for fine dining, rather than honest food. And it just lacks a bit in imagination to quite make it. On the other hand, they did allow me in in T-shirt and shorts (did get the up-and-down look, though) - the visit was a spur-of-the-moment decission based on the Good Food Guide on our way back from Alton Towers.Restaurant staff I would rate as capable rather then competent. Mostly things went OK, but attention was mainly on what appeared to be the regulars than us non-locals. The one major blunder came when we had finished our main course and agreed to see the dessert menu. At that point we were left on our own for the next 20-25 minutes, our waitress even cleaning out the neighbouring table when that party left, with no menu materialising. Eventually we called over the waitress and asked for the bill - this did not spark a recollection that she'd promised to bring the dessert menu. A few minutes later, with a wallet clearly visible on the table, another waitress asked if we would be interested in dessert. I'm quite sure that she would have gotten us the dessert menu right away had we decided to give it another try, but at that time it was just too late - dessert has to be the end of a meal, not the start of a new one. So despite a few really good notes on the food preparation, in the end we came away with an average experience.
