Popped in for a leisurely solo lunch last Friday as so rarely get to stop off in Chester. Was my first time here and was absolutely fantastic. The team were excellent. And the food..sublime. I didn’t have the set menu (which looked to be very good value!) as wanted to try more dishes and have some wine - of it was worth it. The sticky bacon - 10/10. The schnitzel 10/10. The coconut ice cream 10/10

After a gap of some 18 months I really enjoyed my return visit. The food was again mostly excellent, the highlight being the rhubarb-based dessert, which was delicious. My only criticism is that the belly pork starter was (for me) too salty. We enjoyed a very good Spanish Albarino with our food. Service was again very friendly and I will happily return when next working in the area.

We were celebrating my husband's birthday and was looking forward to a nice meal. I had the chicken liver parfait with sourdough toast. The parfait was fine but a very small portion however the toast was overdone almost burnt. My husband's sticky belly bacon was good but again a really small portion. I chose the pan fried cod fillet as a main, unfortunately portion size was extremely small! The cod was about the size of a table spoon and there was no mashed potato. Two long stem broccoli and parsley sauce. My husdand had 6 chips with his featherblade of beef and he gave me two as I was so hungry. We ordered a side dish of roasted carrots at £5 but it was essentially just one chopped carrot! £13 for a medium size glass of Malbec was way over the top. As we were so disappointed with what we ate we decided to forget both dessert and coffee but the bill came to £130 which is not value for money. In summary it was way over priced for what you get, do not go there if you are hungry. We came home and raided the fridge?

My partner and I booked here for the Valentine's set meal for an eye-watering £75 per person (!) and we felt utterly conned. We had the duck spring roll and the soup for starter, which were both fine but tiny in portion size. For the main, we shared the châteaubriand steak, with some broccoli stems and fries. Again, this was just okay and a big let down as the apparent main focus of the meal, but there simply wasn't enough to share. The dessert was exceptionally awful. We ordered the fig cake and the passionfruit pastry, both of which were disgusting. The fig cake was topped with camembert, a choice that simply didn't work. Both desserts had a couple of very reluctant bites before being pushed aside. The stand out of the evening was the fries, which aren't exactly difficult to mess up. The place also lacked any atmosphere, and we left still feeling hungry. However, the service and members of staff were absolutely fantastic and looked after us very well for the evening. They are a true asset to Sticky Walnut.

The 2 courses for £15 enticed us in, but I’ve been left feeling conned and hungry. We’ve eaten here once or twice a year as a treat and last night went with a couple of friends. Sadly, for us, it’s not worth the expense any more. When we got there (about 6.30pm) we were seated upstairs and it was absolutely freezing. We were all wearing warm clothes but shivering. Didn’t warm up until we got our mains and the restaurant was busier. Service was great until we got our dessert. As the waitress put them down for us to eat she told us that they needed the table back in 15 mins . We’d been there just over 2 hours, and hadn’t delayed in ordering food when asked. Put an edge on the rest of the meal . After that we felt like we were being watched by hovering staff. Why present a 3+ course expensive menu with an option of a 4th course if you aren’t going to give people the chance to enjoy it? The food was generally very tasty, but portion sizes have reduced. The bread that you normally get as a welcome has stopped being served (and now appears on the menu to pay for). My starter of burrata was lovely and plentiful. But after that, my venison main had a lot of celeriac and sauce but the piece of braised venison was tiny, maybe 2 mouthfuls… I had the ice cream and honeycomb dessert, which was hard to eat with a giant piece of honeycomb plonked on top. The bill for 4 of us, with one bottle of wine and a couple of additional glasses was over £280. Too much for the size of the portions and if you’re going to rush people from their tables. There are other better fine dining experiences in Chester now so sadly I don’t think we will be back in a rush.

We had a family meal here for a party of six. Atmosphere Convivial and living up to it's aim of being a neighbourhood bistro. Food For the table: The following were declared to be good or very good: rosemary and thyme focacia; medjool dates wrapped in smoked bacon, gordal olives. Starters: butternut squash roasted with baharat spice, truffled Jerusalem artichoke and Welsh rarebit on brioche toast, cauliflower soup (although served luke-warm). Mains: Pan-roasted cauliflower with sumac, pan-fried cod fillet, 35-day-aged sirloin of beef to share. (I would describe my main of halibut fillet as containing too much broth, making it more of a miso dish. Had I known this, I would not have ordered it.) Desserts: vanilla creme brulee, honeycomb ice cream, baked vanilla yoghurt. Service For some people, the current service might be too rushed and did not contain the attention to detail expected in an Elite Bistro restaurant. We, however, had no complaints. The two servers were definitely on the ball and responded quickly to all our requests, despite the restaurant being almost full; they were also polite and friendly. Value for money It was not cheap at £48 for 3 courses (£56 for those sharing the beef steak), but the quality of the ingredients and efficiency of the service counterbalanced the cost being slightly on the high side.) Everything considered, we enjoyed our evening at the Sticky Walnut.

Wanting to support independent business, the Sticky Walnut should be the ideal place to enjoy an outstanding meal, especially given the various accolades it has received over the past years. It is however, an over priced, over hyped, disappointing restaurant with under educated staff who are inept at guiding you through the over ambitious menu. I say over ambitious, as they do not succeed in delighting you with the mouth watering description on the menu. Unfortunately portion size, mistakes and general inability appear to shine through and this takes the sheen off some potentially excellent cooking. I’m sure if the actual chef was there the whole experience would have been wonderful, but unfortunately I don’t believe he was. I was desperate to try and love this but I’m afraid hope alone did not satisfy!! My wife, however thought there was nothing to write home about!

We were so looking forward to trying the Sticky Walnut so we booked it for our anniversary. We had high hopes but came away disappointed. We selected starters and mains which were fine but not exceptional. They were well prepared but insufficient. We search out good food but this was ok and portions were far too light. With half a bottle of wine left and still hungry we ordered cheese which was sold out at 8:20 in the evening! We ended up leaving and taking home half a bottle of wine to accompany cheese at home. Not the anniversary we were hoping for. Wish we could recommend but can’t as the bill came to £130 and we left very hungry. Can’t say we will return.

After hearing good things from locals and seeing the good reviews online we had high hopes for this place, but honestly we were very disappointed. The only positive was the service, staff were attentive and friendly. The atmosphere on the other hand reminded me of somewhere that you may go for breakfast. It didn't have that upmarket intimate feel that you would expect when paying the type of prices that this restaurant commands. Upstairs was hot, cramped, and poorly lit. The toilets were like something you would find at a takeaway - tiny, old, badly decorated. Remember this places charges you £50 per head and £52 for a bottle of average Malbec. Let's be real here. The food was mediocre at best. We had the braised pig cheek to start, the meat was dry, hard, about the size of my thumb and the sauce lacked any depth of flavour you expect with this type of slow cooked dish. I went into my second course hungry and disappointed. The venison (two ways) turned up well presented but in a bowl. Why? Completely the wrong type of plate for this dish. This dish had a very well cooked piece of meat some celeriac puree, smoked bacon a roasted onion and a venison sausage (dry). It was ok and an improvement from the starter but again nothing that wowed me or left me longing for more. Lastly the desert with was a thimble full of ice cream, chocolate sauce and a huge piece of honey comb balanced on the top. A confused dessert that seemed like an after thought by the pastry chef. I wanted this place to shine but it was such a disappointment.

What a very disappointing experience. This has to be the most pretentious place I've ever eaten in. The menu looked decent (if a fair bit expensive) and the reviews are great, so I ventured here for a meal. The confit duck leg was presented really nicely, but the sauce that the red cabbage was served in tasted weird. What stood out for me most of all, though, was the portion sizes. They were small, and I mean TINY. Seriously, I couldn't believe the size of the lamb starter - it was about the size of a five pound note, folded in half. And the halibut was the most pathetic piece of fish I've ever seen in my life - and for £32! It took about 30 seconds for us to get through the starters and about a minute to get through the mains. I didn't bother with a dessert because I needed to go home and make myself some tea first. Also, it wasn't a busy evening, but they sat us right at the back, directly next to other diners, which made the experience quite uncomfortable, especially as it was so quiet in there. I felt like we were all sat together, and I didn't really want to talk much because the other guests could hear every word of our conversation. I understand why restaurants sometimes sit diners closely together so they're not going all over the place, but this was too close. I now look back over the other reviews and I can't help but think a lot of diners have given positive feedback because they've been taken in by how up itself the place is, and it's a chance to come across as a bit "posh". So all in all, I do not recommend this place. The whole experience was style over substance. I've a good mind to sue them for false advertising, as what I was given did not constitute a "dinner". But I'm in a good mood, so you just scrape a two-star.

This is a top notch restaurant that hits the spot on so many notes. The main thing though is that the food is original and absolutely delicious. We both opted for the Pan Fried Fillet of Stone Bass - the golden raisins, pine-nut and salted lemon dressing was a standout. I think I make the best mash potato but Sticky Walnut challenged me with their garlic and olive oil version - I have since made this at home and I am a complete convert. The restaurant is relaxed for what could be considered fine dining. The staff knew their stuff and were welcoming. It also offers good value for money. We were slightly amused by the guest at the table next to us ordering just a plateful of carrots in a culinary restaurant of this calibre, but each to their own. Visited with 5 others, upstairs table, crab cakes miniscule, watermelon and parma ham salad an assembly piece on a plate. Truffled chips, we're more synthetic truffle oil, overall it was just poor value for money as the food was just OK, mediocre. Staff pleasant enough,...

Excellent service and delicious food! We enjoyed espresso martinis and the sharing steak - so tasty. Amber was very attentive and went out of her way to look after us.

Booked the mediterran special evening, £50 per person. From the start it was a poor experience. Wine list very limited and even when looking at full list it was minimal choice. Needed to ask for ice to cool the white wine and waitress was pleasant...

Fantastic food throughout enhanced by truly excellent service. A wonderful meal where surroundings felt friendly and relaxed, yet where attention to detail was consistently high. Couldn’t ask for more - many thanks!

Fantastic meal. Went on a Tuesday night and expected it to be quiet but it's a testament to the quality of this place that it was buzzing. Had food from the a la carte but the Bistro menu looked unbelievable value. Food superb and service...

Good food, good wine, excellent choice on both menus, Bistro and Main. Attentive service, nice cadence to the meal. ( not too fast not too slow) Makes for an excellent evening out!

We hadn’t been for a number of years so were so looking forward to a return visit to celebrate our anniversary and it didn’t disappoint. Every thing we (greedily over) ordered was fabulous. Friendly efficient service, relaxed setting. Couldn’t ask for more.

Invited by my daughter and partner for a Fathers Day lunch to this little gem in Hoole.. Service was great, food and drinks all very good, and overall we had a lovely enjoyable lunch, so, for me that equals 5 stars.

Recommended by a friend - absolutely lovely place and very pleasant waiting team too. We had starters and main, plus drinks and coffee (no room for dessert unfortunately). Varied selection, including some specials (the fish was worth every penny). Everything was very tasty and beautifully...

Unusual and varied dishes. Ours were perfectly cooked with interesting but not overwhelming spices. Not much proper veggie but fish. Good selection of cheese and homemade biscuits. Variety of good wines. Efficient and professional service.

Truly excellent food. If they invested a bit in redecoration and in new crockery and cutlery, this would be a five star restaurant.

Excellent food with excellent service. I had the steak and it is easily one of the best steaks I have ever eaten, accompanied by a lovely Georgian red wine. I would go back in a heartbeat. Nothing to fault.

This was nearly a great place to eat The setting and service was great, perhaps a little noisy for some as there was a large group in for what seemed like a works-do. The food and drinks menu is well-priced and has a good offering available, however, what you order is not necessarily what you get. For example, one of our starters arrived burnt but was quickly comped without question. The Chicken Schnitzel main was actually a Chicken Supreme - it was well cooked and tasty, but certainly wasn't a Schnitzel, which is fine but in conjunction with other things, the quibbles add up. The deserts were good, but were missing key flavours from the menu. For example, the ice cream sandwich is supposed to be served with chocolate and orange flavours and a cardamom ice cream - however, there was almost no orange and the ice cream was absent of cardamom. Similarly, the baked vanilla yoghurt was delicious, but was supposed to have ginger, which was absent from the desert.

A superb dining experience. We were greeted warmly and had a huge wedge of bread to start. Starters were superb, so too were mains. The deserts were generally good but with an outstanding lemon tart. Overall a splendid experience with attentive and warm service.
