The Travelling Man in South Tyneside

My wife and I always visit here if we are needing a cheap, homemade and satisfying Sunday dinner. The staff are fantastic, friendly and never leave you waiting. The food is always tasty and comes in generous portions.

Called in the other day with my brother for a couple of pints and food. We were quickly seated and were about to go and order drinks but the waitress offered to bring them over - nice touch. The menu is really good, lots of options. I went for the hot beef dip and brother went for the Trav Tower Burger, both came with home made chips. Food was excellent quality and all freshly cooked. I'll definitely be returning soon. It did get busy - so might be an idea to prebook.

We ordered 2 beef Sunday lunches at 11am for a 2pm pick up. We’ve used this before and was really happy to despite a small wait to take home our piping hot meals. The pub was full of diners as normal, I noticed they did daily specials Mon to Fri at £6.99. Both our takeaways had plenty of beef, lots of veg, roastie and yorkie pud. Great quality

used to go to The Travelling Man regular but as it started to get more people getting in the standard of food dropped which is a shame as we used to love going there week days as well as weekends and it was ideal to take the family for Sunday lunch so sadly wont be going back not

Home cooked fries chips were the highlight of the hunters chicken for my husband. I ordered mince and dumplings off the specials menu and it was enormous considering it was a lunch menu. Both high quality sand steaming hot! The portion size was huge as well worth the money for that and taste. Met 2 of the girls and both were welcoming and friendly. Highly recommend and will 100% be returning. So excited to eat I didn't take a before so attempted to include the specials menu.

We’ve been to The Travelling Man a few times over the years and have normally had a good experience. We arrived to be told there’d be a delay as they had a booking of 30 due so the main dining room would be full. We were told a 20min wait but it was only 5 or 10 mins before we were seated in the small room. Maybes due to the arrival of the group but we were served our main meals, piping hot within minutes. We didn’t feel rushed at all and the staff were great. The meals (roast of the day) was lovely, enough to make you full. We would prefer to have had a gravy boat as opposed to the meals being served with gravy all ready on and would be nice to have had beer mats too.

Went with the other half for a spontaneous lunch, arrived and carpark pretty much full thought not going to get seat. Pleasantly greeted at the door and advised there was a table but a wait on food, asked to take a seat while table was being cleaned. Ordered drinks and swiftly arrived. Food order taken and again swiftly arrived. We had starter and main each and were seated served and paid the bill within an hour! Now if that’s what you call a wait on food then I’m more than happy to wait for the fantastic food they serve! Well done guys and gals! Have a very happy Christmas we will be back in the new year (if not before)

Five of us ate here this week and have to say everything was delicious. Huge portions and piping hot when it arrived. We all ate different items but everything was delicious. Staff are all great and nothing was a bother. The bottle of Shiraz was very nice also.

Visited The Travelling Man on several occasions now trying various things off the menu. Today was the fish combo with a Side of curry sauce, the partner had Chinese chicken curry. Both meals were fantastic, the fish was incredible. Chips are absolutely mega! Guinness was cold and customer service is fantastic. Can’t knock it!

94 year old birthday and his wish was Mince & Dumplings Contacted the pub to confirm it was still on the Menu and was informed no booking required Arrived at the restaurant and were shown to a convenient table that the Manager “Crooksy” had prearranged I ordered from an extensive menu Mince and Dumplings for the birthday “boy” and Chinese Chicken Curry for me. The efficiency of the kitchen staff was commendable as the food came very quickly. Large portions The old chap defied the laws of physics and.consumed the generous dish with gusto. Got to also mention the waiting staff who were very amenable, courteous and attentive The impossible happened and the old fella decided the Bailey’s Cheesecake was needed to top off the dinner. Got to say I was very impressed at the pudding list and only wished I was able to squeeze one in. The presentation of the Cheesecake was impressive and it was demolished in style Big thank you to Alan and all the staff on making an old man’s night memorable Well done

Picked up a few sunday lunches over past couple of weeks , no complaints , proper home cooking ,mince and dumplings delicous , look forward to going back when it’s safe to do so .

We’d ordered 5 meals almost as soon as we realised the Travelling Man was doing SundayMeals with a pick up appointment time. Firstly, the pick up went fine, the meals were there and ready. Unfortunately they came served in loose polystyrene box’s with the gravy already served on the meals so the carrier bag had a pool in the bottom. We all agreed that we preferred our gravy served seperately and that the meals could have been served in foil topped containers. Saying that, and apart from a missing Yorkshire pudding the meals were lovely. Beef, thickly sliced and plentiful, chicken, gammon and sausage too, all served with excellently cooked 4 veg, yorkshire and one big roast potato. Apart from containers and gravy it would have got 5/5.

Excellent choice and price we all had 3 course for 10.00 had veggie spring rolls chilli dip then scampi chips and cheese cake and icecream was lovely

We went as a family for Sunday lunch we ordered our meal and straight after sweet we were as to vacate table and go and sit in an area near the entrance to finish our drinks when we arrived there there was only standing room what a shambles we will not return there again but I am sure the owner will not be bothered but eventually if he treats all his customers like that he won’t have any left to chase out

Went for a family meal.Food was nice enough though only one (albeit large) roast potato was a bit disappointing. Big portion of everything else though. Left feeling stuffed.Only real gripe is the mens toilet. It absolutely stinks. Whatever's going on in those drains needs investigating.Truly stomach turning.

Honestly the best Sunday dinner I’ve ever had, literally wouldn’t go anywhere else for mince and dumplings! Staff are so friendly too! Desserts are to die for! 10/10 would recommend :)

First time here for sunday lunch , big mistake food awful i had beef dinner which was swimming in tasteless gravy beef tough yorkshire pudding bought awful , my husband had the steak pie warmed & soggy in micro wave worst sunday lunch I’ve eaten avoid.

Visited for a drink with a work colleague. The bar area is cosy, staff are welcoming. I had no option but to bring to the staff’s attention that the area we were sitting in smelled strongly of urine. Would have stayed longer had this not been the case. I hope the situation is rectified for customers comfort.

Went here on a Thursday night and was initially told that they were too busy and very apologetic. Had a drink and then the waitress came and told us as they had got ahead they could. Service was very efficient for such a busy night. Chicken curry was really tasty but you have to be extremely hungry to finish it.

Meal was tasty and hot on arrival and very reasonably priced and the service was spot on , will definitely be going back think we,re booking again for December 10th for the Xmas lunch .

Second visit here where we were once again given a very friendly welcome by Gemma who was able to help with our menu enquiries. Excellent home cooked quality food at great prices - all the staff are friendly and really helpful. Lovely atmosphere - lovely staff - lovely food.

I (we) had the Chicken Pharmo. One spicy & the other standard. What a superb dish & very filling, in fact I couldn’t even finish the accompanied chips as I was absolutely “stuffed” Looking forward in returning soon

Was recommended by my sister, my wife and I visited for Sunday lunch. Made very welcome on arrival, quickly shown to a table when our drink order was taken followed shortly after by our meal order. We opted for the Senior Citizens meals and were very impressed with the portions and quality of the meals, both were excellent, I had the Beef dinner while my wife had the Chicken followed by Jam Roly Pudding and custard. We were both stuffed, an excellent meal with good friendly service, will be back next week.

An absolutely gem of a place to find delicious food at a very good price! £9.95 for a 3 course meal which you cannot fault at all. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. Portions were huge! Give it a try. You won't be disappointed at all.

On my previous visit i was very underwhelmed and wasn't fussed on returning.

Had a fantastic Sunday Lunch. Food piping hot, generous portions of super tasty ingredients topped with with a delicious gravy. What makes it stand out from the crowd is the outstanding welcome, super attentive and friendly staff. We eat at this establishment on a regular basis and we have never had a bad meal, the service and hospitality is always 1st class. Highly reccomend!

Since being diagnosed with Coeliac disease early this year I’ve struggled to eat out. I was recently recommended the Travelling Man and it didn’t disappoint! I was so pleased to see a dedicated Gluten Free section on the menu.

This pub has simply knocked me over with the quality of the food. Not to mention the staff are lovely and the place SO well organised. It is home cooked food and excellent !!!!

Am sure like many couples sometimes after a long week at work you don’t fancy a “big night out” you just want to unwind a little with a pint a bottle of wine and some nice pub food.If you can bring all that in at around the £40 mark so much the better.This is where the Travelling Man delivers.

I was invited by family to go for Sunday dinner for Father’s Day. As a vegan I wasn’t sure what they had so contacted them initially on Facebook & my husband then phoned them (on the Saturday evening). They said they could provide vegetables , gravy & if we phoned prior to visiting they could make sure they’d do some dairy free mashed potato

Newly refurbished, neat, clean and modern. Great service and very good food. Fresh, tasty and value for money, especially for a table of 6! £9.95 for 3 courses. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Would recommend.

We visited for lunch on a Friday daytime

First visit here, first impressions was it was really busy which pleased us! Hubby had an all day breakfast which came with chips? Bacon was over cooked and tomato was rock hard! I had lasagne, garlic bread wasn’t home made and both of our chips were paper thin and full of oil! Complained but didn’t get a discount... when we looked around there was lots of good going back! Won’t be going back there..!

Visited yesterday with my partner and our 8 year old son and 11 month old twin boys. Food was beautiful and obviously home made. Yorkshire pudding wraps with gravy and homemade chips were delicious. Very reasonabley priced too.

My wife and myself decided to revisit the travelling man after the recent refurbishments. To be honest there is little difference in the appearance when you walk in. The chairs have been recovered and the walls have a slightly different colour, well that being a man’s view. The menu has changed slightly, and I had gammon for a main course, It was nicely cooked, quite large and not too salty. My wife had a beef dinner which she rated very highly. So, apart from a view visual changes the pub still serves quality meals and a real plus is the two young ladies serving you. Both, quick, efficient and having a pleasant personality.

We had a booking which some of our party couldn't get to due to a broken down car. Very difficult to find somewhere on mothers day at 12.30pm and 4 hungry young people in the part of 7!

My wife and I went for an early anniverasy lunch today (44 years tomorrow) and decided to visit the Travelling Man. It is some time since we visited but the quality of the food is still very good. Good quick and pleasant service, a wide variety of menu and then excellent grub for a very competitive price.

After going to the travelling man at least twice a month the food quality has always been perfect! I’ve never had a bad dish from the pub but I’m sure if I did then the friendly staff would deal with it in a prompt manner.

Down to earth, independent pub with friendly, helpful staff and tasty, reasonably priced food. Can understand why it attracted a wide range of customers from parents with toddlers, young couples and older people.

Went today and ordered two pints, two sandwiches with chips and salad and a side order of onion rings and coleslaw. When food arrived it didn’t look great but we still proceeded to try it. The chips were full of grease and my bun was very stale. I seen my friend eating her sandwich when I noticed her bun had mould on. I took a bite out of the homemade onions rings loaded with batter to find the batter was not cooked inside. We sent the food back and were offered new sandwiches, we refused and opted to go somewhere else. The manager/worker come over to our table to state that she didn’t think it was mould as the buns were freshly delivered today and that it didn’t look like mould. This is quite upsetting as I’m aware what mould looks like and if she fails to recognise this then it scares me to think what sort of food they send out to people’s tables. The worker/manager stated she would give us a refund, about £13 was placed on the table despite the bill coming to approx £22. Me and my friend left all the food and even left our drinks as we were heading else where for food. Me and my friend just laughed and thought there’s no point in causing a fuss as this pub clearly has no concept of how to deal with customers let alone complaints. I would highly recommend avoiding this pub. Once seated at a different pub my friend felt a tingling at the side of her mouth and felt as though it was sore, this was a raised red lump so it’s questionable that the glasses were not clean.

We have just had two takeaway mince and dumplings. They were absolutely amazing! We will definitely be going back to try the carvery as that looked just as nice.

We have eaten here plenty of times and have never been disappointed always a warm welcome and nice food the first problem we have had was today, we took our son for lunch he ordered a burger we had sandwiches all was lovely as ever but as he was halfway through his burger he found a bit of plastic in it, he still ate the rest as he said it was really nice, we went to pay the bill and I mentioned the incident just so they could keep an eye out, to our surprise they wiped the whole bill took away the piece of plastic and explained about how they arrive from a local butchers fresh and would most certainly be taking it up with them, very professional all round with fantastic service and food as ever, we will not be put off and will certainly return, give it a go you won't regret it

My husband and myself recently visited the pub, located in Boldon, on the main road. Big carpet at the back of the pub. The staff are always lovely, so pleasant. Good menu for a Sunday, plenty to choose from. We both had the mince and dumplings, which was a huge portion, homemade, and so tasty, and reasonable prices. The only thing I would criticise is the pub could have been a little warmer,

this is a gem of a place just off the A19 in boldon never ever had a bad meal here and the the service is second to none I have had bariatric surgery and didn't fancy anything from the children's menu so I asked the barman if i could just have a small portion of one of the adult mains and it was no problem at all and the slow cooked brisket was amazing

I had the slow cooked brisket with mash it was excellent The staff were very very nice. First class food at great value prices. We'll be going back soon.

My wife and I call here whenever we are passing. It is a traditional Public House and has a good feel as soon as you enter. There is a set menu and a specials board for food, we often go for the specials as they are good value and more than adequate for lunchtime. The welcome from the staff is always warm and cheerful which immediately makes you feel at ease. The food is always excellent, freshly cooked, hot and tasty. This pub never fails to please unlike some of the large groups where quality is never consistent. This is a real pub with real food which is tasty with fantastic staff to match.

We were a party of 10 for lunch and the food was excellent especially the beef brisket and Yorkshire pudding wrap. The mixed grill was huge! Mint aero cheesecake was lovely and light. The staff here are very friendly and helpful - will definitely be back!

Decided to meet up with an old friend for a meal, so after reading the reviews decided to pop in and try the food. A lovely greeting when we arrived with happy smiling face's from all member 's of the staff. The pub was rather busy as there was a funeral in the bar. There was no problem we were seated and served drinks and handed the menu. The food is all home cooked and the chips are fantastic. My husband had home made pie with vegetables and a portion of chips. Myself I opted for the folded Yorkshire pudding and given the option of a choice of 3 meats, so I had beef and chicken. It was served with a gravy boat each which was gorgeous and very tasty. As the meal was a rather large portion we did not have a sweet, although they did look very inviting. So pleased with this little find. We have booked a table for the next week for Christmas Lunch with our dear friend. A three Course Christmas meal for £9.95 and really looking forward to it.

My son and I regularly eat out on Sundays and have visited many places in and around Sunderland. This place is one of the best in my opinion. There was good parking, the staff were very polite, friendly and helpful, the venue was very clean with a nice homely pub type atmosphere and the service was very quick. The food was hot, tasty and plentiful. My Son can be fussy but he gave his meal a ten! Good experience and will be back

I can't remember the last time that I went to this pub so it's a long time. I can't wait to go back again we arrived mid afternoon and were asked to wait while a table was being prepared . The staff were very friendly and professional , we opted to have a two course meal it was plentiful and very tasty. There wasn't a great choice of beers to choose from. There were customers arriving to take out meals which is a good idea. It's a little out of the way so I think a car is needed unless you like a walk in nice surroundings.All in all it was very good value.

A group of friends met there to celebrate a birthday and were looking forward to this as read some great reviews. Place was clean enough although chairs were really stained, one looked like someone had actually not made it to toilet and I was actually quite reluctant to sit on it. Anyway the guy who greeted us was lovely and cheerful which is always a good start. Took a while for food to come but as it is all cooked fresh you actually dont mind, well that is if food is cooked properly. One of our table got the liver from the specials board and was enjoying it until she cut into the liver halfway through her meal and realised it wasnt cooked and blood was coming out. Obviously she abandoned eating as the blood was all in her vegetables by this point. When she mentioned it to the lady who collected our plates that the liver had blood oozing out the lady just mumbled ok and no appology was received, bad customer service I say. The chef came to the table a few moments later to ask what the problem was, she explained about the liver being undercooked and he said next time maybe she should tell the waitress she wanted it cooked well done. Its not a piece of steak mate, liver is either cooked or not cooked simple as , maybe I have missed something where liver is now cooked rare, medium rare or well done. The guys attitude was a disgrace and was basically blaming her for not asking for her liver to be cooked correctly and may I add was exceptionally rude with it and at no time was an appology given. We didnt expect a new meal or money off but we did expect a courteous appology for receiving undercooked food.

We visited this pub with friends, it has a good sized car park at the rear. Lovely friendly atmosphere. Really good bar staff and waitresses. The young blonde lady that served us at our table is an assett to this pub, so cheerful, friendly, professional, and looked after us all night. Nothing was a bother to her.

Visited prior to going to Boldon cinema. We were pleasantly welcomed, orders were taken swiftly and food was delivered in timely fashion. The food was tasty and appeared home cooked. There is lots of choice on the menu. Slow cooked beef brisket was lovely. Vegetables all fresh apart from peas but that wasn't a problem as who shells peas everyday??? Overall I liked what I had as did my partner and we would return.

Just had a takeaway roast from here and sadly disipointed at the lack of veg and the small amount! An ok size piece of lovely beef, but then a tble sp of mash and turnup 6 strips of cabbage and 3 slices of carrot and the small tray filled with tin peas..dont no if acsidently give us a kids meal. No roastys collue brocky ect..1 sml yorkshire. Shame as been here for sit down meals with family for years, but wont be doing takeaway again. still hungry.
