Bobbed in at lunch to have a quick look with the chance that we may book for the evening. Greeted by a grand chap that was extremely polite and helpful. We booked in for the evening and had a lovely meal served at the right time with enough in-between courses for a breather etc. Waitress was very polite and nothing was to much trouble and the food was great. Gammon for me and Chicken burger for the missus, would recommend 100%. PS Dogs allowed in as well

Great Pub/Hotel, to be fair it's more a village style pub with rooms, really can't comment on the hotel side but there seemed to be quite a few guests in the bar so the rooms and hotel side looked healthy. The food was good and well varied from Italian through to Thai with some traditional local dishes thrown in. The service was quick and staff were pleasant. We would definitely recommend a visit if you are in the area.

Well if you want a taste of a small English country pub and accommodation this is a great place to stay. Situated in Bardon Mill between Newcastle and Carlisle, it is a quaint village. The Pub is downstairs and would hold about 50 people with a dining area. The food was great with also a selection of authentic Thai and Italian dishes along with the English meals. The rooms are up two stairways and have been refurbished and provide a good night sleep. Would highly recommend this hotel for an overnight stay

We stopped here as a halfway point from Scotland to home. It was excellent customer service from start to finish - the care and attention to make our stay the best it could be was really noticed. Rooms were lovely, one a little small but perfect for an overnight stop. The rooms were a little warm and I had to sleep with the curtain open a little to let some air in but not uncomfortable. There was some noise from the bar below but not enough to stop you from getting your head down. We had dinner here as well and it was so delicious - again, service from the staff was impeccable. Breakfast was also brilliant, ordered the night before to allow for quick service in the morning. Overall the hotel and bar had a really good vibe to it and we felt well attended and looked after. Would definitely consider staying again if we were in the area!

I've been visiting the area for the last 15 years. A lot has changed. Some places that were once great no longer are. But a few have gotten better....and in the case of The Bowes I'm going to use the word great. I stayed for two weeks while excavating at Vindolanda. The food? Superb. Best steak pie I've ever had. Curry was also outstanding but be sure and ask which chef is cooking, it will influence the spice rankings! Eddie the bartender will pour your a friendly pint, Astrid and Catherine are almost mother hens in their efforts to make sure your stay is comfortable. Ian the owner often gave people lifts to start their day, although for me it was a pleasant 35 minute walk up Chainley Burn to the dig site. Also note excellent rail connection from the station just down the street and at least some useful bus links. Our little band of excavators has decided that The Bowes will be our "local" for all future seasons. UPDATE: Back again for two weeks in 2023. Still great!

I really wanted to like it here, the people are so nice, but our room was freakishly hot (while it was 12°C outside) and the only windows we had were above the smoker's terrace. So it was either melt or smell cigarettes. The second day we were there, there was a party in the bar. We could hear every word of the music in our room, even though I wear earplugs. Really sad about this, because they truly were nice people. Our rooms was also nice and relatively modern, and the bed was ok.

Bardon Mill is a hamlet just off the A69, 3 miles south of Hadrian's Wall, close to the river South Tyne, and very pretty .. a village shop, a church, and the Bowes Hotel. The hotel has changed out of all recognition, new owner, and practically gutted and completely refitted. It is quite upmarket now. When I called, all the rooms were fully booked and out of my price range anyway, but I had a really good meal there and when I enquired about a bed for the night, the owner got his phone out and found me a bed up the road at The Byre (it's on airbnb) which was very comfortable and reasonably priced.
