The Red Lion in Northumberland

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary at the Red Lion. The selection on the menu was incredible, everything we loved. Andy's food was prepared and served to a high standard and it was delicious, particularly his game pie, which was out of this world. Thank you for making our night so special, it was fantastic.

We didn't stay here but we would definitely come back to stay. The food was fantastic, beautifully presented and my glass of wine was also really good. Highly reccommend!

My husband celebrated a significant birthday this week and my daughter and son in law surprised him with a birthday lunch. The food was fantastic, such high quality. My thanks to Sue and Andy for such a friendly welcoming pub and if you haven’t already visited the Red Lion - would recommend it most highly. You don’t know what you’re missing

Sue ensured we had a fabulous time for my mum’s 87th birthday, made an extra effort for all 10 of us. The private room was brilliant for the occasion. The food was delicious and presented beautifully. Would thoroughly recommend.

Fabulous place to stay, eat and drink. Hosts kindly prepared a takeaway breakfast for us as we were up and away early for a local race event. Dinner was great quality and excellent value. Will definitely return if in the area

A lovely one-night stay. On a cycling tour and lucky enough to be staying at this lovely establishment for our final night. My room was superb and as a dinner/drinks destination, it was faultless. The staff were all lovely and on top of their game. A word too for the locals who were ever so friendly. The Lamb hotpot was simply stunning. Beer and wine offerings were great and, considering the quality, every element of my stay was great value. I’ll certainly be returning.

We had a great Sunday lunch and, despite a bit of a muddle over numbers, everything went like clockwork. Lovely atmosphere and exceptional young staff 👏

We wnt for a meal and it was excellent. PERFECTION!!!!! Cannot say anything about rooms as I didn't stay there. But if the rooms are as good as the food then the sky is the limit

I had a lovely time at the Red Lion, we got served by a polite young lady who was well mannered and patient taking our order. Our room was also clean and tidy. Good location and price I’d definitely reccomend and will be returning.👍🏼

If I could leave 1000 stars I would. Proprietors have exceptional attention to detail and it shows in the rooms and the food. Great selection of beer on tap and a nice wine menu to boot. I could stay here forever!

Dropped in on the off chance for Sunday lunch while passing through the area. Delightful old bar, friendly staff, and the best Sunday roast we've had for ages. Roast pork/roast beef, both meats tender and tasty, excellent Yorkshire puddings and perfectly cooked veg, all served piping hot. Couldn't have been better, thank you!

Whenever we visit the island we head to the Red Lion as the food is always good, the beer well kept, a great wine list and always the friendliest service especially from Hannah and the team! As pubs go this hits the spot, warm and inviting with traditional values and well cooked food without being at all pretentious. The chef kindly had a chat with us about the island provenance of his ingredients, some grown on the pub's own plot. Would definitely recommend a visit.

We want for Sunday lunch after visiting about 6 weeks ago for a bar meal which was superb. The belly pork dish was outstanding. Sunday lunch did not disappoint in the slightest. Lovely starters, and the roast pork and roast beef mains were excellent with plenty of meat, potatoes and fresh vegetables. Great value at the price they charge. Definitely going back in the future.

Fantastic pub .really friendly .we stayed for 1 night after walking .it was nice to come into a warm fire to dry boots. Food was very nice and well made .rooms were nice and clean. A great one stop for them hill walks . Loved the place .some parking outside or just park along the road . Breakfast was freshly made and perfect for a days walk .

Out of this world food We go every month or so and have the belly pork. I had to tell the chef/ owner it was the best in the world … problem: I never order anything else He told me he had a customer who said the same about the beef pie. So I tried the beef pie. Verdict : as I said to my friend the chef … the beef pie is only eleven out of ten - the belly pork is seventeen out of ten Also … the soufflé is the best in the world too Great little village with nice walks, great beers, lovely staff I wanted to keep it a secret ….

Excellent meal last night. . The twice cooked pork belly was outstanding. The 3 of us that had it all said the same. The rib eye steak was cooked to perfection and also very tasty. Sensible price for a bottle of Pinot Grigio, and a cracking pint of Heineken.!!! We will definitely be going back

My husband and I had the best meal we’ve had all year at the Red Lion on 29/6 Cheese soufflé to start followed by crispy pork and cheesecake in a jar and fruit crumble to finish All of it was absolutely delicious We live in the Tynedale area and have visited most of the local eateries We usually expect to be disappointed in some aspect of a meal but this was faultless We’ll definitely be back

Love this old world ie country pub built on a bridge too you can sit outside on the other side of the bridge and drink or eat and inside the food is all freshly cooked friendly staff too

We had just arrived for a long weekend break, and for last thing on a Friday evening we were looking for tea out for all of us (and our dog) - Phoned them asking if they had availability, which they did. Headed over and we were welcomed to a lovely bar area, as we had dog with us, which was fine. Drinks were ordered and very nice. Meals also ordered, inclusing starters. The homemade soup went down well with a nice crispy bread roll. and the Pate was lovelly. Mains there were 2 dishes mainly Steak and fries and Salmon and pasta, both were well received and in the steak respect cooked as ordered. Overall it was very friendly and great food (Dog even got some crisps from one of the locals :) ) Would highly recommend paying a visit.

First impressions is it’s a local pub for local people ( if you get what I’m saying) . However the staff were friendly and the food absolutely delicious. Beer choice limited.

Had a lovely substantial dinner here. We love our steaks and could actually afford one here - not only that but it was very good. Heaps of vegetables accompanied the steak and a very nice bearnaise sauce. Cooked just as we asked.

We were staying locally and had the Red Lion recommended to us. We had an enjoyable evening meal in the dining room which has around 7 tables. The food was of good quality and there was a good choice. Prices were OK. Staff friendly.

Went to the vilage for a family holiday for a week and went to the pub for dinner me and my girlfriend had the stake and were both very impressed my family all had different items and where equaly impressed the owners where very welcomeing as where the locals

We were staying in the 4 star Langley Castle Hotel but decided we could not eat there because, on the hottest day of the year, the dining room was overbearing having no A/C, so we sought out The Red Lion and had a lovely meal with exceelent service.

Recommended by the owner of our local B&B; we were pleasantly surprised to find such a varied menu and, the standard of cooking was extremely high.

We were a party of four and came for lunch on a week day. The menu was short, but the food was very impressive. We thought the steaks were particularly good and very well served and garnished. Plainly, there’s someone in the kitchen who cares a lot about what he or she is doing. The wine list was again short, but we were pleased by the NZ sauvignon blanc and the Italian cabernet. Service was a bit slow, but that’s understandable if a small establishment is doing things properly.

We were staying nearby and wanted to book somewhere offering a varied, interesting menu for dinner. The Red Lion did not disappoint! There were four of us at dinner and we all had difficulty selecting from the menu because the choice was so good. The quality of the food was fantastic and was good value. Although the pub was quiet on the evening we were there, there was still a lovely atmosphere and the service was very good. We were so impressed, we took a card with a view to booking a room for a stay next time we visit!

We took our girls, 21 & 24, away for the weekend to Newbrough. Glorious countryside and stayed at the Secret Garden. This was only a minute's walk from the Red Lion where we went for Saturday night dinner.

Classic pub with a varied menu selection, food was great, easy to find and accessible. Our hostess and waitstaff were welcoming and attentive. Could have done without the stinky dogs roaming beneath the tables but nothing another pint couldn't help to overlook.

We had two lovely dinners at the Red Lion, particularly enjoying the lamb shanks on the second evening, with nicely cooked fresh vegetables. The waiter was particularly nice - friendly and efficient. We sampled two of the real ales on offer and enjoyed both of them, as well as a bottle of pinot grigio with our friend on the first evening.

Just a one night stay whilst up in the area on business. Very friendly place and people. The room was very clean and comfortable. Attention to detail in the room was great, ie; pod coffee machine, bottled water, ample other hot drink options, good soaps and thick towels. All in all a pleasurable overnight stay.

We went there on the off chance on the penultimate evening of our stay in the area and it was so good we just had to go back on the following night.

The menu was several cuts above pub food, with creative and delicious entrees,and in fact we came back a second night because we so enjoyed both the food and our waiter.

Mike the chef went out of his way to produce a meal for my wife who has food allergies. It was superb so we booked for another night. Mike made sure that he had prepared something different and this was again great. We all had wonderful meals in very pleasant surroundings. The young serving team were very friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. I would however ask that some one takes a couple of hours to train them how to clear and serve, because they deserved it. Keep up the good work Mike and if you have time, come out and chat to your customers, they would like that, we enjoyed meeting you. Meals were hot, well presented and tasty. Thanks

We were staying nearby and popped in for a evening meal.Menu selection was interesting We found our meal to be well presented and satisfying. I would recommend the lamb hotspot. Staff took a long time to take our meal order, possibly due to being new to their job. The ground floor of the pub mainly the bar area with a good selection of beers and wine etc., the dining room was up a short flight of stairs. The room was comfortable and had local artists work displayed for sale.

We walked "the Wall" We dined at The Red Lion. Absolutely all was a great experience. Great beers, great food.

We were told that the food here was great, but the owners of the B&B across the road - and it really was. My husband had the rib eye steak with homecooked large chips, and I had the chicken with mozzarella and bacon wrapped round the medallions, with sautéd potatoes. It was great. The steak had a barbeque type flavour without being overwhelming, and the chips had to be tasted to be believed, and I nicked a couple from my husband's plate. Even the vegetables (carrots, cauliflower, and sugar snap peas) were so tasty. The sauce seemed homemade, definitely not shop bought, and the overall experience was great. Two empty plates, and we would certainly go again if in the area. The main eating area is upstairs, but if you have a dog, you can have food in the bar. Staff were attentive and friendly.

I had delightful stay at the Red Lion. I used it as a base to walk several days along Hadrian Wall and it was very convenient. The hotel is full of character and is very comfortable. The village is quaint and quiet. The owners were lovely and helpful. I do not hesitate to recommend the Red Lion.

As a party of three we were doing the Hadrians Wall Path. The Red Lion is not on the way but Andrew offered to pick us up from Twice Brewed and take us to Red Lion at Newbrough. We had great sunshine and it was so nice having a quiet pint under the trees outside talking to the locals. The meal was excellent and we all agreed the food was fresh and well sourced. One of our party was a vegetarian and he could choose a nice selection from the menu. The rooms were comfortable and the surroundings very quiet. The buffet breakfast was to a high standard - a varied selection of cereals, juices and fruit as well as various cooked breakfasts. To cap it all Andrew took us to Steel Rigg so we could pick up the trail again. A wonderful stop for accomodation and meals.

Stopped here on a Saturday, early evening after completely a bit of a hike round the pretty surrounding countryside. Friendly staff, nice surroundings & great food with good choice of real ales - a proper English country pub. The food was nicely present with with a lot of care taken for it not to be just basic ingredients e.g. pretty sprouted salad leaves etc for garnishes and separate gravy jar for magnificent belly pork (as that's my favourite I always judge a restaurant on this dish, and it didn't disappoint- perfectly slow cooked pork and the most wonderful crackling). Will definitely call again soon.

We stayed at the Red L for 3 nights ate there each night. there were 7 of us and we all ate different things - everything was good.

Stayed at the Red Lion over the Easter weekend, rooms very comfortable, modern, and clean. Dinner in the restaurant was delicious, local produce with a modern twist. Breakfast was also great with great selection. Presentation of meals/food also fantastic.
