Had a fabulous dinner here with friends. Food was all wonderful, and staff were lovely. The charcuterie board that we shared to start was particularly wonderful. Only slight issue is getting there in the dark on a rainy night, as roads are reasonably narrow and there was mist the night we visited!

Beautiful food. I started with pickled North Sea herring with potato salad and a sweet mustard cucumber relish. My friend had the green lentil soup with nduja, this was packed full of flavour. For the main I had roast load pheasant, bread sauce, chipolatas, chestnuts, dripping roasties and bacon. Cooked over the fire pit gave the whole dish a gentle smoked flavour which was nicely balanced with the flavour of the ingredients. I would thoroughly recommend eating here

We had promised some friends a remarkable experience at The Feathers (they having had our reports of it for a couple of years) and, my word, it came upto expectations! A warming fire on a chilly October day, a welcoming bar and very very good food. The fish and chips were declared excellent, my wife's charcuterie board was admitted to be extremely good and leaving space for pud and my steak suet pudding was out of this world. We managed to accommodate desserts but did not get as far as coffee. Excellent choice of wines and gins. Very clearly value for money. And we were allowed to park in the open area opposite the front door as my wife struggles with the slope outside. We will be back!

This is a clear cut establishment that has a no nonsense approach. A drinking den cushioned with as much local food as one wants. The staff are warming and helpful as they guide you through pre food drinks and leave you to read the vast choice on the menu. We took Sunday lunch in the late afternoon. Very relaxed and informal service but not slow . We started with the Selection of Homemade Charcuterie, what a generous board of the chefs skill and his interpretation of local products, a great punchy celeriac on a remoulade , crusty Sourdough slices with venison salami , ham hock terrine, a game version , some liver parfait and smooth creamy pork rillettes, all scattered with a few pickled gherkins. Tremendous kitchen skills all thoroughly enjoyed. Main plates were just as outstanding, roast loin of local pork, moist, crackling , apple on the side , and a little stuffing. Beef well rested , just as good and a 5 star horseradish, ( been many’s a year since I seen it as good as this one) . A whole turbot cooked to perfection, All dishes eager to be crowned the best of the show . The vegetable selection was also impressive, tasty fresh and plentiful. The crusty Sticky toffee pudding is also showcasing this houses talents . Fine selection of wines , even some eau de vie variants , educational for some , maybe too potent for others. This Place would shame country house , Pretentious establishments. Simply the best complete package we’ve encountered in years . Thank you to all for the enjoyment .

It wasn't bad but it was definitely overpriced and overrated. Last Sunday we had lunch at a 'non-gastro pub' and it was as good as it could have been. Today's event was, by comparison, very average; yet far more expensive. For a self-described 'gastro-pub' you'd expect things to be above the average of a 'pub'. The roast beef was nice enough but there wasn't much of it and there wasn't nearly enough gravy. Normally, at a pub lunch, you get asked "would you like any sauces or anything else"? At this point I always say "some extra gravy wouldn't go amiss". They then bring out a boat of gravy and all is well. That didn't happen here. There was no checking on whether we were happy with the meal or not. No checking on whether or not we needed anything. To be fair, two of the three 'waiters' struck me as being little other than school-age teens working their Sunday away rather than revising. The cabbage was undercooked and the potatoes were as hard as river pebbles. Not great. The beer was nice enough but we were charged for a lemonade and lime that we never ordered or had. They removed it from the bill after we mentioned it but still, the bill was fifty pounds for one beef lunch, one veggie lunch, a beer and a soda water. No starters, desserts or coffees or anything. It's a lovely location and a nice day for it but we won't be back.

We spotted these "pop-overs" from the main road and thought we might have lunch after our cycle event. We like our food. We had the beef. Not a lot of it came on the plate, one roast spud and a spoon of mash turnip, and the side veg came in two small breakfast cereal size bowls. We assumed the veg was for one and expected 2 more pairs of bowls. They didn't come. Disappointing because the meal was nice flavour and well presented. What would one person alone have been presented with veg-wise??

Beautiful Sunday lunch, just let down by the profiteroles choux pastry, rock hard. Great starter of pork carpaccio, roasted pork loin, cut thin, and served cold, beautiful. Melt in your mouth roast beef, great Yorkshire pudding with 6 vegetables. The filling in the profiteroles was lovely, a blueberry mixed cream, just let down by the choux pastry. Highly recommended.

TL:DR. Overpriced, below average food, friendly staff, no parking. We visited based on the good reviews, and left disapointed. The staff were friendly. This would have been fine for a causal pub or a bbq/burger/pizza venue. The website had example and daily menus, though wasn't up to date with the daily menu 2 weeks out of date. So the menu on arrival was different. Some items were the same, but more expensive on the served menu than online (fish and chips £3 more than online listing). The food prices and menu items set expectations for good quality gastro pub dining as advertised. This bar was far from met. The fish was good, the chips were poor in quality and quantity. The stuffed aubergine was fine, but nothing special, with only one half aubergine and a quantity of what tasted like low quality microwave packet rice. Again poor quality and quantity for the price. The venue had old country pub vibes, the staff had casual pop up burger /pizza vibes, and the menu/food had over ambitious chef that couldn't deliver vibes. But all priced at the higher end of what should be a refined and well balanced gastro pub. I've had better food in better quantities for less money at nicer venues at almost every other restaurant that self identified as a gastro pub that I've visited. And there is no parking so you need to park on the road in the village, with a sign outside asking you to park down the road, a walk from the pub. Would not recommend and will not return.

We have been coming to The Feathers for years & years. Never disappointed, first class service, wines & food especially. We booked this evening, having not been for a while because of illness. We were shown to a choice of tables in the restaurant area to the right of the bar. Still looked the same, wonderful, but!! The smell of smoke was dreadful! We noticed that there was an outside cooking area beyond the window, never there in the past. We decided to have a drink in the bar to the left of the entrance to see if the smokey smell dispersed. Unfortunately it did not, so with great regret & disappointment we decided to cancel our booking & leave. We are extremely upset, we love The Feathers but regrettably could not face eating in a smokey atmosphere. Hopefully we'll be back & try again. So sad!😢

At a time when so many pubs are serving the same standard pub fayre at ever rising prices, it's wonderful to find somewhere that offers something a bit different and, given the quality, is comparably such good value. It's also one of few places that don't make you talk over piped music, which we really appreciated having a hearing aid wearer in our party. The lamb we had could be cut with a fork, it was so tender and we were still talking about what we ate the following day, it was all so good. Service was slick and friendly so it was a 5 star experience all round.

We have visited the Feathers on many occasions, but this was the first time since Covid.Somehow we felt it has lost its buzz and sparkle and is perhaps trading on its past reputation.Starters were OK but not as warm as they should have been.Strange to be asked if we wanted tartar sauce and mushy peas with our battered haddock, when these are clearly stated on the menu as part of the dish.Tomato sauce is now served in sachets, not to be expected in a quality restaurant. Please note there is a discretionary service charge of 12.5% added to the bill. We nearly missed the note on the bottom of the paper menu. The service was polite but not as friendly as in the past, perhaps a feature of the staff having to wear masks.

We haven’t been here for a few years and we were really hopeful that it hadn’t changed. We weren’t disappointed- in fact the food was even better. We sat outside - being able to choose where we sat. We ordered budvar in amazing glasses and were happy to peruse the menu easily acceptable via the QR code. The starters were all excellent, the mushroom tacos, potted sea trout and the mezze starters. The vegan options were fantastic and tasty with enough for the four of us to share. We then had the lamb, fish and the rump steak to share. Yes we got fries AND potatoes but we just had a laugh about it and we weren’t really fussed about the salad leaves accompaniment as the meat was so good. It was all delicious and we even had puddings in the sun. Super service from a young staff who are enthusiastic and yes, as someone stated before, individually dressed! No problem for us! Loved it and thoroughly recommend this place.

After hearing nothing but good things about The Feathers we booked it for a birthday meal. Really wished I hadn’t. It was the most bizarre experience….. the food was beautiful could not fault it but the front of house left a lot to be desired. Appreciating the extreme heat I do not expect to be served by people in PE shorts and tops exposing middles. I also do not expect plates to be piled and scraped in front of me either. After being served a flat pint of lager and querying it, we were told someone would check it out. They didn’t. I then asked them to take it away as we wouldn’t be drinking it, they still charged for it. I could go on the list was long of things that weren’t right which is a real shame as the food was lovely. I was also shocked to find a service charge has been added to my bill, I’m guessing this is because no one would leave anything otherwise. I understand that COVID has impacted people and businesses but this needs sorting immediately as it really lets the place down.

Lunch with friends yesterday, very disappointing meal. Steak to share (£48) arrived barley warm with chips AND POTATOES and the plate dressed with a few shallots. The accompanying salad was a small bowl of leaves with a scattering of chopped onion, not what I would expect for such a pricey meal. My partner ordered the kofta wraps, which were so stodgy, they were barely edible. The service was so slow, that the 12 1/2% service charge was an insult. Needless to say, we won't be returning!

I went here on recommendations from previous reviews on Trip Advisor but I won’t be going back in a hurry. We had their Sunday lunch, pork and beef which were very standard at best. The pork had more fat than meat and the beef quite chewy. The vegetables were nice, but I found the potato’s soft and reheated in a microwave taste.. the disappointment was that the dishes were delivered soaked in gravy rather than giving you an option. They don’t have any children’s menus which was disappointing and personal think they’re missing a trick. The main disappointment was the price. £16.50 for a Sunday lunch you’d expect good quality or at least enough food to fill you for a week but sadly we didn’t get neither. They added a mandatory service charge of 12.5% which is crazy and unknown to other restaurants I’ve eaten in. The staff weren’t exactly the friendliest and wouldn’t warrant a tip of that size! Personally I wouldn’t recommend, it’s no better than a chained restaurant but certainly you pay a premium.

Some friends of ours are regulars here. But we've never been lucky enough to eat here with them until now. It was still lockdown so we sat outdoors. We would have needed to anyway as they don't allow dogs inside, which is a shame. But we got a sheltered area - thankfully, as it poured down. They've now got a big covered outdoor area. We got a warm welcome. The owner and family came out to say hello and welcome us as they know our friends. The food was as amazing as we'd been told. A really good selection of responsibly sourced ingredients, many local. They were even prepared to vary the menu a little for us. So often a place can get bigged up by friends and you visit and wonder what they are talking about. But we thoroughly enjoyed our meal here and are looking forward to the post-lockdown full service on our next visit.

So firstly nice place - for me it’s a little but over the top in terms of the menu with its various wine pairings but we are all different - expensive £25 for 2 courses you expect the wow factor that wasn’t there for us. The big issue was despite very good Covid guidelines they actually served our food on the wrong table (not sure why the customers on that table thought it was there’s given different orders!) they the. After about 30 seconds proceeded to just move it over. When we said not keen the other customer said but I never touched it - get that but given we wear masks half our lives someone breathing on your food isn’t great and we shouldn’t have been put in the position when they realised they messed up take the food away don’t make us have to complain and then have other customers giving us grief. They replaced it - sadly my lovely looking Yorkshire was replaced with something I would chuck out when I do my own cooking. We were offered extra gravy when the meal was pretty much over. This would have been one star but the manager came and said sorry and offered the meal for free - nice gesture we didn’t take him up on it and paid because we ate the meals but it saved me from giving it a proper kicking in the review. For me I Always worry if they are happy with the lack of hygiene in public what happens in the kitchen it’s a little off putting. Place gets great reviews but for us Carts bog is 100% better and far cheaper and just down the road the run head is about half the price and tastes just as good.

The star of the place is obviously the food. Which is locally sourced and cooked to perfection. The only place I could compare it to was the food at hands and flowers (Tom kerridge restaurant in Marlow). The ingredients and combinations worked great together. The cooking was sublime everything on the plate was bursting with flavour. I could not stop smiling as we ate. It was one of those meals where you stop half way through each course and swap with your partner because you want them to share your choice and you are desperate to taste their plate of food.I only wished I lived nearer. It's easy to see why Jamie said this is THE place to eat in Northumberland. Was a fantastic drive just to find the place and on entering you really feel the hands of time have turned back 200years it's such a rustic pub. But believe me it's all about the food and dining experience. The choice of wines leans towards the French and a great selection of alea too. The food is off the scale though we had scallops and black pudding starters which were mouth watering followed by halibut and partridge mains which were even better.

Our third visit - the food is good - flavoursome and not over fussy. In the past we have shared the charcuterie platter (my favourite). This time I had steak and mushrooms - fantastic - and my wife had the sole. She thought more veg would have been nice? Desserts were less accomplished - my fruit crumble was a bit dense rather than crumbly - the custard was to die for but not enough in the little jug. We like the atmosphere, range of ales and pleasant, lively staff. Will be back next time we visit the area.

Very good gastro pub. In attractive countryside twenty minutes from Newcastle upon Tyne. Have been to several gasto pubs. Our experience has not often reflected the good reviews. However, the Feathers Inn did match its excellent reviewing. All four of the group were very happy with both food and service. Most likely you have read the reviews, go see for yourself.

Sunday lunch was quite poor. Watery gravy, over cooked beef and hard roasties. Swede was watery and not mashed. Drinks took an eternity. Decor and comfort is poor. Needs a face lift. Staff are ok but it was noisy and service erratic. Other visits have been very mixed in quality too. Will give it a miss going forward.

Not sure where to go this week after a bit discussion we decided to plum for The Feathers Inn. It is almost 2 years since we last visited but the quality of the food & service has not changed one iota. Both of us decided to go for the Cod & Chips from the Northumbrian Coast after spying another table receiving their's & that turned out to be a good choice. The Batter was not to thick, just thick enough & did not take over from the fish like served up in some of the Pub chains. Nice accompaniment of veg & Tartar Sauce which was homemade & to die for. This was followed up by Home made Gooseberry Pie with Pastry so, so good. Yes an excellent meal from an establishment I hold in esteem & would definately recommend. If I had one grouse that would be the menu terminology. Yes it is nice to have local food & establishments like The Feathers certainly help the local producers but we could not help but chuckle at a couple on a nearby table who were obviously out of the area & were discussing the methodology of the ingredients that went into making Blaydon Burn Soay Lamb & what did a deer called Hyon's Wood look like, was it big like a Red Deer or one of the smaller breeds then the male in the company spotted "Roe". Yes it sounds good but as they say bull***t baffles brains but you can have to much of it.

We travelled from Whickham to meet up with 5 friends. In truth we do not go here enough but it is always a pleasure. The pub/restaurant is a cornerstone of the village. We we’re quickly made welcome and ordered our drinks and scanned the menu. Everybody had different starters, mine was a beautiful black pudding with ducks egg. Other starters included sardines on toast. For mains I had a lovely well cooked steak, others raved about their halibut mains which was s triumph for the chef. Sweets were all lovely, I went for their vast cheeseboard, and I mean vast! All prices were very competitive for the absolute quality on offer. Well done to the young team of staff serving on, they complemented the establishment indeed

Slightly mystified by the recent so-so reviews. Popped in for a birthday lunch en route to a weekend up on the Northumbrian coast. Three courses each of very good quality food, two coffees, three pints of good local ales and a dessert wine for birthday boy, cordials for her and came out at about £90 which for this level of cooking was absolutely fine. Confess that the only courses that I can remember were my roe deer 'Wellington' which was impeccable and the Burnt Northumbrian Cream (a large crème brulee) which was very good, but I do recall we were both very happy with our starters . Madame at the bar who was also waiting on all the tables had just the right level of attentiveness and friendliness.

Visited for a birthday lunch today after a bit of an absence (not their fault, I have to admit) and am delighted to say that The Feathers provided us with a superb lunch today, and were happy to accommodate one fussy eater who didn't want creamy mash with their sausages with garlic and fennel, and served up, as requested, an extra portion of (unbuttered) greens. The slow-cooked beef and lamb in a tomato based 'gravy' with nduja was delicious too, top quality ingredients beautifully prepared and cooked. Hats off to The Feathers, they deserve all the accolades they have received. Thoroughly recommend.

The Feathers is in a lovely rural setting, with great views and plenty of off-street parking. There are great quirky touches throughout and we particularly liked the old cookery book menu holders and the scrabble letters marking ‘reserved’ tables! This is a restaurant serving food from well-documented sources in an imaginative way. The menu is not over-long because each dish is prepared with care. In the colder months, we choose to eat in the room with a blazing fire shared by diners and locals chatting at the bar. Quite the best meals we have anywhere had over the past few years and the staff are happy to engage in describing the menu and recommending dishes. We have only visited for lunch and reaching this remote location (and driving home) in darker evenings may be a challenge. Do try it but be sure to book. Disabled access is not easy.

The staff were very friendly and made good recommendations for drinks to try. As a vegetarian I’m used to mediocre/ lacklustre meals but was very much surprised at how flavourful and impressive the veggie option was! Food is superb, good sized portions (eg the charcuterie starter and cheese board were huge!) and every course interesting and perfect with unusual add on options. My pint of beer was one if the best I have had anywhere and I am a beer enthusiast. Service is knowledgeable, friendly, efficient and understated. In the south this meal would have been at least twice the price.

We have visited this excellent Inn many times over the years. For the first time, we had a disappointing experience. Although very tasty, both the starter (pumpkin soup) and main courses had problems with being served under-temperature. The soup had to be sent back for reheating. My wife’s pork dish was cold. My steak & kidney pie was hot, but our accompanying vegetables were also cold. A great shame since everything was very tasty. The staff were very understanding and took the soups off the bill, and offered free deserts (which we sadly turned down, since we were full!). Full points for customer service - but we recommend more care is taken over checking the temperature of the food before serving to table. Just as well we weren’t the judges for one of their well-deserved culinary awards.

Booked a table for 12 of us for a Christmas night out, when you work in a pub you don’t get Christmas in December. Very nice, welcoming and friendly staff, great food and reasonably priced as well. Only downside was the argument that broke out between us over the difference between a Ford and a fjord, I guess that’s not the pubs fault. Would definitely recommend.
