The Pennyweight in Darlington

Have used this hostelry a few times but unfortunately this time the food was pretty mediocre.

Okay but you end up Smelling of food even if your not Eating.

Just had some drinks here. It is good to do this, but I cannot judge the food yet. Will be back to explore more. For a visit certainly good.

Popped in on the afternoon for food. Food was nice and bar staff were friendly and very helpful. Would recommend.

Visited today for tea, a small glitch with the printing of our food order left is waiting over an hour, as soon as it was noticed the lady behind the bar (which I didn’t take her name) sorted it in no time, complimentary drink and was so honest lovely and down to earth a total asset to the pennyweight, will be back as always. the food was lovely

Well that was a surprise, popped in here for a nibble & had a feast. Remember when pub food was like home, well this pub is that. The food is lovely & good value, no fuss just great food. Credit to the bar lady she was a darling. A must visit when in Darlington.

Called in early evening for pre theatre meal . We were welcomed by a friendly bar man . He advised us before choosing our meal of anything that was no longer available . Menu choice was good . I have to say that for Pub Food the standard was excellent . Our meals were served hot , of good quality , well cooked and well presented . Portion size was more than we expected but welcome . Vegetables were freshly cooked . Very good service all round . Pub has a nice welcoming atmosphere .

Lovely Sunday lunch yesterday, went with friends and we were all very impressed with our dinners , loads of fresh veg and tasty roast beef . Excellent service will definitely go again .

Had Sunday dinner yesterday with family and it was lovely. Loads of meat great selection of veg and loads of delicious gravy. Service was amazing too.

Absolutely gorgeous Sunday lunch and bar man can’t do enough for you even when he was so busy he’s so polite and friendly , just what a pub needs , only went for Sunday dinner and my 3 friends and I ended up staying over 4 hours lol 👍

Steak sandwich wasn’t very good, I was told it was slices of steak just to find out it was little chopped up pieces of beef (more a beef sandwich) not a steak sandwich No salt or pepper, not even sure it was cooked from raw, won’t be paying £10.95 for it again, and what beef was in it wasn’t much maybe 10 grams at most If your going to save your cut offs from beef at least make it look like beef lol

Lovely meals, chips were lush, love popping into this pub, always worth a visit. Friendly staff, was told there was a wait for food, but we didn’t wait that long, food arrived nice and hot.

Called in on a Saturday afternoon for something to eat and a few drinks, great welcome and lucky to get a nice table as the place was very busy. Beers were good and the food was very tasty although pie with mash and chips is a bit odd bur nevertheless tasty…..the chips were excellent! Only downside was only one person serving, taking food orders, clearing tables and delivering food….all credit to the young girl doing this as she always had a smile and remained very helpful….deserves a rise!

What a great Sunday lunch with a choice off the normal menu which is part of the reason we choose here for lunch having fussy eaters in our party I love Sunday dinner and today was exceptional the meat was cooked to perfection and the amount of food you got is great for big eaters Definitely recommend

Not often you find a friendly pub in a town centre but honestly we did not want to leave here. It has a nice cosy part as you walking and a dining area opposite. Great selection of drinks & the menu was very good. We had two sandwiches and didn't need to eat anything for the rest of the day as it was huge. Really good value a real winner here.

Food is good. Service is good however the wine is vile. It's like drinking ribena Who on earth thinks jack rabbit is a decent wine 🍷 it's so so sweet. Not what you want to be drinking with food. Better matched with jelly and ice cream. Come on owners try it yourself before you expect customers to drink it 🤮🤮🤮 it might suit some tastes. At least put on a range of other makers. Shiraz malbec and merlot all jack rabbit.

Nipped in for a couple of pints. Mark was a decent bloke. Nice pint of Morretti

Pints a bit pricey, but the atmosphere and decor was brilliant. Didn't try the food.

Three of us ordered lasagne ....we all left it as it was disgusting the mince was still wiggly as if not stirred ...there was no sauce in it and and no taste at all ...11.95 ea 2.00 freezer meals are far superior. We were asked if everything was ok we said not but nothing further happened...the manager was no where to be seen. I rang today to speak to him about it but have not had my call returned as yet. I didn't really want to air this on here but feel I have been left with no option. In my opinion save your money 💰 and eat elsewhere

had lasagna for lunch think chef forgot to put sauce in the meat so dry very disappointed

I ordered the hot beef baguette, the beef was so tough you couldn't cut it or chew it but by the time I found someone to comlpain to the rest of the party had finished there meal I was offered a replacement but I refused at would have meant eating alone, no part refund or beverage was offered so I paid £10 for 8 chips and a plain baguette

Excelent Sunday lunch. We were lucky to get a table as a majority of the tables were reserved. Definitely will be back again....but will book a table next time.

I follow The Pennyweight on Facebook and read your Christmas menu had launched. My fiance and I both had the Christmas Club sarnie and what can I say but WOW! It was a Christmas dinner in a sarnie. Lovely meat, stuff etc and chips were lovely, service great as always and staff friendly. Didn't have enough room for a pud as we were so full up!

My friend Jan & I are regular visitors on a Thursday, arriving fairly early & enjoying a few drinks before ordering food 🤩 today we both had corned beef pie with mashed potatoes & veg 😀 yummy & just what we needed on a cold wintery day, roll on next week for more of the same, great service with friendly staff who are always polite & professional 🙂 long may it continue 😊

Although very tasty the price of the vegetarian option is almost identical to the meat dishes which although is common in the industry it still seems unfair. Staff and atmosphere excellent.

Good food and a great selection in the menu. We had a few small plates and a pie. The pie was fabulous & the small tapas style dishes were a nice touch. We return when back in Darlington.

Great spot for lunch with great value was pleasantly surprised when popping how warm it was. Have been to a few places lately & it has be freezing. The girls who served us were fab. We will return soon

Popped in today for a spot of lunch and the food was amazing definitely worth a visit and from talking to the staff the menu is only just changed with loads of homely meals on it great for me

Wow been coming to the pennyweight for ages and on Sunday I thought we would get a late lunch while we watched the Christmas switch on definitely didn’t anticipate the town centre been that busy the staff were great given how busy they were and the food was fantastic had one of the best Sunday dinners in ages Definitely recommend

We came here on a Sunday evening for a Sunday roast dinner. Upon arrival I asked the barman if they were still serving food. He replied "What time is it?" 6.10PM I replied. Yes he said, still serving food. Now this should have been a red flag but I ordered a couple of drinks and sat down and we checked the menu. While we were doing this a guy came out of the kitchen and said that they had turned the ovens off and told the barman not to take any more orders after us. Barman then came to take our order which was two Sunday lunches of beef and pork. Told that there was no beef or pork. So even after checking it turned out that there was no main courses we wanted and that the kitchen staff wanted a flyer. Told the barman that I has specifically checked that they were still serving but it cost me £10.50p in drinks to find out this was not the case. His excuse was that the kitchen do a deep clean on a Sunday. I pointed out that it was now 6.15pm and the menu states that food is served up until 7.00pm. Still charged full price for both drinks without any apology. Pretty pathetic. Avoid at all costs.

Fantastic food! We were a last minute table of 9 on Wednesday evening and they happily moved tables around for us all to sit together. All the food came together and was absolutely brilliant. Really well priced as well. Will definitely be going back.

Its been a while since I have been at the Pennyweight for food with friends, used to be good. For drinks its fine but the food was appalling. Tasteless, luke warm and unappetising, the meat tasted off. We were warned by some other people about the food but thought it was just them, it wasnt. None of us will be going again.

Ok pub,pretty quiet. Bar was very sticky as was the floor. Nice big glass of gin.

First time visit and had Sunday lunch. We really enjoyed our meal , thick proper gravy , roast parsnips , Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese . 2 different meats to choose .We would have liked more veggies. But overall we loved it and will definitely return.

Food was great, beer was great and a nice cosy relaxed place to be!

Popped in for tea this evening with friends the guy working was very knowledgeable about the menu with what I could and couldn’t have been gluten free The food was amazing and the service was fantastic would definitely recommend

Popped in yesterday after visiting the cinema. bar man greeted us i ordered the beef n ale pie i was very disappointed at the fact that the gravy was put in the plate first then the pie and mash .it left me no choice in how much gravy i wanted i stopped eating it also nobody ask how the food was. I did tell the man that cleared the table he was very polite and said he would tell the chef apart from that its a lovely pub been popping in for over 20 years

Went in for Sunday lunch. Excellent choice and good service from both bar staff and waiting staff. Reasonably priced and plenty meat and veg served with the Sunday roast. Only negatives were the Yorkshire pudding was hard - very overcooked and the cauliflower cheese was smothered in orange cheddar- totally smothered ! Everything else was perfect

Ordered lamb with 2 soft drinks @ £33. Lamb was disgusting, totally inedible, will not be back

Went to the pennyweight 10th Sept, having never been in before wasn’t sure what to expect, ordered sweet chilli beef parmo and it was lovely and the portion size was amazing would highly recommend visiting this place if your in the area. 😊

Sunday lunch , waited 50 minutes from order been taken before food arrived, and then it was only lukewarm, everything was cooked ok but the only hot part was the mashed potato as it was covered with the roast beef, definitely wouldn't go again

Always fab home cooked food, nice staff and a good atmosphere, oh and they allow dogs too :)

Me &my husband &grandson went to have a meal today we had fish &chips, the fish was so dried up, the peas were cold x the chips were only warm, not up to you're usual standard, we were very disappointed ,don't think we will be back for a while

Had food here, it was terrible, ordered the whaler and gammon steak, chips were swimming in grease and mushy peas were dry. Eggs for gammon steak had grey/black stuff on the bottom and the mushrooms were old and dried out, will not be returning, shame as I’ve eaten there previously and food was good

Avoid kreft holdings pubs, terrible management and service. Message them with issues and they block you.

Great pub food with a twist. Popped in on darlington pride weekend for some food and was lovely. Good sized portions and very well priced. Nice selection of cask ale & the staff were very friendly. Will pop back in when in darlington

Visited here today for lunch, We all opted for Sunday lunch, very big portions & the meat was beautiful. Service from the waitress was great very welcoming and nothing was an issue. Definitely worth a visit.

This place use to be the place to be… things obviously have changed. Tables were repulsively sticky, food was luke warm and drinks had floaters in. Next time i will give it a miss. I’m not against frozen food, but usually pubs try to hide...

Went for Sunday lunch. Waited over 45 minutes for food from ordering. Food was average meat was good the rest was very poor quality veg swimming in oil. When it became clear we hadn't been served no apology from senior staff. Very bad experience wouldn't recommend.

On visiting here today 26/06/23 myself and two others entered to be confronted with sorry what ya doing to which I said pardon to be then spoken to rudely again with are you eating or what the young girl behind the bar was extremely rude and uninviting I have never experienced this in here before we sat down after I said we were eating but I was so upset by the experience so we decided to leave this young lady should not in my opinion be working in any service industry and they have now lost a customer where I have always enjoyed the food and service really disappointing the young lady in question has long dark hair I really hope that this is taken notice of as I will not be recommending or visiting again 3 customers lost!!!
